"Divorce?" Jaden Reed asked with shock written all over his face, a woman sat in front of him with an arrogant face. She was his mother-in-law, Helen Rae.

Jaden knew he was the most hated son-in-law of the Rae family. He was treated worse than a dog, yet he could do nothing but endure all the pain on him because of the love he had for Vera Rae. Vera was his wife of over four years now.

But the fact that his mother-in-law brought up the idea of him divorcing her shocked him.

Was marriage a kind of joke to them?

Four years ago, an arranged marriage was made between Reed and Rae's family. Since the two grandparents of the families were good friends it was only normal to extend their friendship to the next level, hence Jaden was made to marry Vera . No doubt Vera was the prettiest lady in the whole of V city that her photos were even placed in a magazine.

The family members of Rae's family did not agree to own to the fact that since Vera’ photos were already placed in a magazine and would soon be hired by the popular modeling agency in the city, she should get married to a rather wealthy man who could take good care of her and them as well, but Grandpa Rae did not agree to that hence both Jaden and Vera got married.

Due to the love Grandpa Rae had for Jaden, he even brought him to live with them so he could establish his connection to Vera.

Unfortunately, Grandpa Rae could not live long after that and after battling with heart disease, he finally died.

It was after his death that everyone began to maltreat Jaden, turning him into their slave.

He was made to clean the house, wash the dishes, and even made to wash everyone's clothes. As if that was not enough, Vera suddenly changed from the loving person she was once to a different person.

She was always insulting Jaden and even made it a habit to constantly remind him of his poor status yet Jaden could do nothing because of the love he had for her.

They said love was the greatest of all and could turn even the hardest man's heart but in Jaden's case, that was the opposite because, with each passing day, Vera was drifting away from him.

He could only pray she one day realise that he truly loved her and reciprocated back the feelings.

Helen Rae gave him a disastrous look as she said,

"What good of you is more than a poor poverty spineless pig? Because of you, Vera has become a laughing stock in V city yet you want her to continue suffering all in the name of love? Never! Since your marriage, you have never brought good luck to me or this family. If not for Grandpa's arranged marriage, what would my daughter be doing with a dirty thing like you?”

“Anyways, since Grandpa is no longer alive, you don't have to continue pretending you love her. She's become the CEO of a big company and doesn't need you anymore. So just get your miserable life out of our lives .Your face brings poverty stains to this household. You are not good for my daughter Just get lost, will you?.."

Jaden was calm, he asked who intended for them to get a divorce.

Was this the idea of his mother-in-law or his wife?

It was not too long after Grandpa Rae passed away. Couldn't they have waited at least a few months before asking for a divorce??

Helen Rae sneered, she said it was not a big deal. The only thing she wanted was a divorce. She told him that the only way for her daughter to have a better life was only through a divorce.

“What do you think? Do you think I’m making things up? My daughter can never have a good life as long as you’re hindering her success"

Although before his marriage to the Rae family, they were not rich but an average middle class, after his marriage to Vera their business boomed and just in years they became a top 10 company in the whole of city V.

Jaden Reed was very angry because, in these four years, Jaden did all the house chores and worked as a servant, to support Vera to operate the family business.

Because of his dedication to the work, his little savings was also spent on it, yet all his mother-in-law could do was ask for a divorce.

Wasn't she just ungrateful?

Helen Rae laughed and said to him, "You pathetic poverty dog, you didn't work for a single day, you are only a slave in this family and you better know your place.."

Unwilling to get irritated and angry, Jaden told Helen that if truly she wanted them to divorce, she was to call Vera and Vera should tell him that she was the one that wanted to divorce him without pressure from anyone.

"If you truly want to divorce your daughter, then do me a favor and ask Vera to tell me by herself that she wants to divorce me because she's fed up with the marriage and not you or any other member of this family forcing her. Can you do that?"

Helen Rae laughed, "You are too stubborn Jaden, no wonder you could not make money like your mates out there. Your sight irritates me. The biggest mistake was getting my daughter married to you."

Just as Jaden was hopeful that his wife was being pressured by her mother, Vera came out from the room with her make-up kits, she looked disgustingly at Jaden and said to him, "Of course, all mother said was the truth. I am sick and tired of your life of poverty and need someone better who is willing to take care of me. I want a divorce now. You've been the family slave for years so it won't be right that you leave this house empty-handed, so I'll give you a check of 1 million dollars as a map...."

Helen's face changed.
