Nicole decided she'd rather not push the argument further. Watching Jake's aggressive stance, the security guard looked ready to step in physically, but Frank waved him off.

"Everybody, just enjoy the show. My guy's already on his way. Today, I'm making this punk crawl," Frank said, puffed up with confidence.

Sure enough, moments later, an unmarked van with no plates rolled up nearby. No question what that meant whoever Frank had called clearly wasn't the type to worry about paperwork. Unmarked

  • Chapter 43: Regrets

With Kayla's team having piled in and pinned the whole crew to the ground, none of the robbers could so much as twitch. Derek's chest tightened with frustration, close to actually choking on it.His mouth worked for a second before he forced out, "Fine but this still doesn't add up. Sure, his gun's fake, but how was anyone supposed to know that at the moment? These robbers' guns were fake too, and they're still getting charged. The same standard should apply here."Kayla's brow furrowed. She snatched the rifle out of Jake's hands and pulled the trigger a few times, and out came a tinny, unmistakably electronic pew-pew sound a toy through and through. The whole room let out a collective breath of relief.Every customer who'd been held hostage in that lobby had already crowned Jake a hero in their minds. If he hadn't stepped up with nothing but a toy and pure nerve, there was no telling how badly this could've ended the bank's losses alone would've been catastrophic."I have to say, off

  • Chapter 42: Asking For It

"Derek, have you completely lost your mind? Put that gun down right now. Jake's a friend of mine, you can't do this," Kayla snapped, fury blazing across her face.Derek sneered, but the barrel didn't waver, still leveled at Jake. On the surface, Jake kept his expression carefully neutral but underneath, he was already smirking to himself. He'd clocked exactly why Derek had it out for him the second he'd walked in.Kayla. Obviously.Fair enough, honestly a woman who looked like that, especially decked out in a fitted uniform, was every man's type whether they admitted it or not. But Derek deciding to make Jake the outlet for that jealousy was a different matter entirely, and not one Jake had any patience for."Listen, buddy, I haven't been scared of anything since I was a kid. I'm plenty calm right now but you should probably put that thing away before you regret it," Jake said, tone level and unbothered.Something about how calmly Jake delivered that line sent a genuine shiver through

  • Chapter 41: All Bark

The man swallowed hard and shook his head frantically, terrified Jake might pull the trigger on impulse and end his life right there."Boss, please, don't shoot! Look, honestly, we were just messing around these guns, they're toys. Fakes, all of them!" the big man blurted out, genuinely panicking now.Turned out the bearded man and his crew were just a handful of guys from a poor rural town who'd come to the city chasing construction work. Decent, honest guys, as it happened they'd put in two solid weeks on a job site, only for the contractor to skip town with their entire paycheck.Broke and starving, the bearded man had made a desperate, stupid call: order a batch of ultra-realistic toy guns online and stage a bank robbery. Except now here they were, staring down what looked like an actual military-grade sniper rifle, and every one of them would rather do hard time than die over this. The second Jake heard the word "toy," a few stress lines nearly cracked across his own forehead. He

Just as the bearded man reached to grab a fistful of Nicole's hair, Jake closed the distance and drove a punch straight into the side of his head. The gun dropped from his grip, clattering to the floor. He tried to lunge for itJake caught him under the chin with a solid kick before he got anywhere close.---Meanwhile, back at the precinct, Kayla let out an involuntary yawn.Ever since the whole mess with Hank had wrapped up, Kayla had come out the other side with real credit for her role in it, a formal commendation, even a promotion. She was running her own squad now.Somewhere in the back of her mind, unbidden, a certain young man's face kept surfacing. Jake. The promotion, if she was honest with herself, traced directly back to him.Lately she'd caught herself missing him in odd, unexplainable little moments, a feeling she genuinely couldn't make sense of.She pulled out her phone. On the lock screen sat a photo one Jake would have been stunned to discover existed, since it was o

Jake shook off the whole exchange like it was nothing. "Alright, Nicole, let's get to the bank. It's getting late, and we still need to track down Marcus after this."Amy had already headed off to school, backpack slung over one shoulder. Once Nicole and Jake were settled in the car, curiosity finally got the better of her."I genuinely could not have called that. You always seem so straightforward. How do you even know someone like Tyler? And since when does he call you 'boss'?" Nicole asked, glancing over. Her curiosity about Jake seemed to deepen by the day. He just smoothed his hair back, unbothered."Tyler? He just kind of latched onto me as muscle, that's all. Don't overthink it. Just know that from here on out, I've got you covered," Jake said, brushing it off.Nicole let out a small, exasperated sigh but didn't push further. They arrived at the bank not long after. Being lunchtime, the place was fairly busy but the second Jake walked in, something felt off.He clocked several

No question what that meant whoever Frank had called clearly wasn't the type to worry about paperwork. Unmarked plates meant these were career muscle, professionals who knew exactly how to stay under the radar.Frank's mouth curled into a nasty smile as he jabbed a finger toward Jake's face."You just wait. I'm not letting this go until you're on your knees calling me sir. Nobody and I mean nobody has ever humiliated me like this."The van rolled to a stop, and several men in black climbed out. Frank scrambled over, practically bowing as he approached the man leading the group."Tiger, thank god, you're
