The slap came before he finished the word divorce.

Not telegraphed or dramatic, just sharp and efficient. Elena's ring caught the corner of his mouth, leaving a metallic sting.

"Don't," her voice turned to ice. "Don't you dare."

For one foolish moment, warmth crept into Tyler's chest. Maybe she still loved him deep down?

Then she opened her mouth.

"I have the Cambridge Ethics Forum in three weeks," she said coldly. "I'm the keynote speaker for a panel on modern family values. Do you have any idea what a divorce filing would do to that? To the coverage? To everything we've built?"

The warmth died.

"Everything you've built," Tyler said quietly. "So this is still about you. Your image. Your career. Your business."

"What else would it be about? Your wounded pride?" Elena sneered. "My work has helped hundreds of vulnerable people. That matters far more than your bruised feelings."

Tyler almost laughed. What a fucking gaslighter.

Elena's voice dropped to something quieter and deliberate, the tone she used when she wanted words to land like stones.

"Do you understand what happens if you file for divorce now?" She asked, watching his face carefully. "Every sponsor walks. Every single one. And once the funding disappears, so does the foundation's new assistance program."

Tyler's jaw tightened.

"I'm announcing a long-term support initiative after the forum," she continued. "It's for families like Lily's."

William Hawk. His closest friend. Dead three years in a roof collapse. Leaving behind Lily and their son struggling to survive.

Tyler knew exactly what that support could mean to her.

"If the speech collapses," Elena said, watching him break, "those families lose everything. The media coverage. The donor network. The monthly support. All gone because you couldn't wait three weeks."

She had taken William's death and turned it into a weapon.

"Is your wounded pride really worth more than Lily's rent?" Elena finished, satisfied with how neatly she had made the argument sound.

Matthew shifted uneasily on the couch before standing up.

"Tyler, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault," he said quietly, his voice full of guilt.

"Don't be ridiculous," Elena replied, her voice clipped and businesslike. "You have nothing to apologize for."

Tyler crossed the room in three strides and drove his fist into Matthew's face. The impact snapped his head back and sent him stumbling against the couch.

"Don't you fucking dare," Tyler said quietly.

Matthew straightened, his face cycling through shades of red and white. His mouth opened and closed, whatever performance he'd prepared now gone.

"If you really didn't want to come between a husband and his wife," Tyler continued, "you could've started by keeping your dick out of the wife, you prick."

"What the hell is wrong with you?" Elena shouted, rushing to Matthew's side. "You just assaulted a man!"

"You see?" She turned on Tyler, her eyes blazing. "This is exactly what I've been talking about. You're violent. You're toxic. You solve everything with aggression."

Tyler gave a humorless laugh. She had cheated on him, brought the man into their home, dressed him in Tyler's clothes, and cooked him dinner. Yet somehow, with a few carefully chosen words, she had already recast herself as the victim.

Matthew wiped blood from the corner of his mouth. The wounded innocence had vanished, replaced by barely contained resentment.

"I think I should go," Matthew said stiffly.

"No," Elena caught his arm before he could move. Her voice softened immediately. "You're not going anywhere, Matthewy, sweetheart. Sit down. The Wagyu will be ready in twenty minutes."

Then she looked back at Tyler, and every trace of tenderness disappeared.

"This is my house," she said coldly. "If anyone is leaving, it's you."

Tyler looked at the pan on the stove, then at Matthew standing there in his pajamas, Elena's hand resting comfortably on his arm.

He wanted to say something. But there was nothing left to say.

The television flickered behind him. A wash of orange light across the wall.

Tyler turned toward it. Breaking news. Aerial footage of an entire mountainside engulfed in flames.

MASSIVE WILDFIRE IN LOS VANGEES COUNTY. MULTIPLE COMMUNITIES UNDER EVACUATION ORDERS.

This wasn't a house fire or burning brush. The entire horizon was on fire.

His phone vibrated.

Vice Captain Bryan Holland.

Tyler answered on the second ring, his expression hardening at once.

The command center had been transformed into something out of a nightmare.Elena pulled into the makeshift parking area and stepped out of her car. The air was thick with smoke. In a cordoned-off area near one of the large tents, she could see families gathered around white sheets draped over bodies. Some were crying. Some were just standing there, staring at nothing. Some were on their knees.Elena's stomach twisted. She moved toward the area, her eyes scanning the bodies beneath the sheets. She didn't know what she was looking for. Just something that told her Tyler wasn't under one of those sheets.A volunteer in a yellow vest saw her approaching."Ma'am, you can't be over here," the volunteer said. Her voice was gentle but firm."I'm looking for someone," Elena said. Her voice sounded strange in her own ears, high and thin. "A firefighter. Tyler Raymond. Engine Seven."The volunteer's expression softened. "The families are over there in the tent. You can check with them, but this

The six-hour drive felt longer than it should have. Tyler sat in the back of the engine, watching the sky turn from grey to orange as they got closer to Los Vangees. Smoke filled the air, thick enough to taste. Other firefighters sat in silence around him, their faces grim and focused. When they finally arrived at the command post, Fire Chief Rodriguez Hale was waiting. He was a lean man with deep lines around his eyes, the kind of lines that came from making impossible decisions. He looked like he hadn't slept in days."Listen up," Rodriguez called out, his voice cutting through the noise of trucks and radios. "The fire has surrounded much of this county. We have one evacuation road still open on the eastern side. That road is everything."He pointed to a map on the hood of a truck. "If we lose it, more than two thousand people get trapped. Nursing home residents, families in outlying areas, everyone. We need a firebreak along this eastern line to keep that road open."Tyler stepped
