“Oh my! It’s a black card!” Someone exclaimed.

“I heard that only extremely wealthy people have access to such cards. It’s a very unique card and there are limited copies scattered all over the world. Maybe only a hundred of such.”

“Yes indeed! It has been reported that there are only 20 copies reserved for high net worth individuals in the country.”

“This man here might not be an ordinary man.”

The manager himself was surprised by this. Although he had suspected Alan to be a rich scion, he didn’t expect that he would have access to a black card. This man was an esteemed customer!

“It could be fake,” Lin pointed out and the rest nodded. “Someone of his status cannot possibly possess a black card!”

“Lin!” The manager said with gritted teeth. However, even he himself was having doubts about Alan’s identity but a customer’s reputation should not be ruined.

The manager was an older man so he had knowledge of things. If Alan wasn’t able to pay he would definitely send him to the police and make him pay a fine for trespassing.

Alan wasn’t bothered about the chaos going on around him. He swiped his card and all eyes peered towards the machine. Breaths were being held and Lin was staring at Rex with a mocking smile, already envisioning how the police would drag him away for wasting their time.

Beep!

Transaction successful!

“What?!”

Everyone was stunned. They all stared at Alan in a new light.  The women in the store all began to envy whoever was the lucky woman that held his heart.

“Pack it up for me,” Alan said, putting his card back into his pocket.

“Yes sir!” The manager nodded. “Lin, pack it up!”

“Huh? Yes sir, of course!” Lin rushed to pack up the jewellery with a flushed face. How could she not have known that he was a rich person? She would have gotten a huge commission from this sale but now she had missed it! Did he do this purposefully?

“Do well to come again, sir!”

Alan walked out of the store without paying them any more attention and hailed down a taxi to go home. It was now time to meet his beloved wife. He hoped she hadn’t been too lonely without him all this time because she had promised him that she would wait for him.

Back at the store, the manager was furious. Who knows what that gentleman must be thinking about their store right now? And it’s all because of this blabbermouth! He was glaring hard at Lin who was visibly shaking.

“Do you know what you have done?! You have stained the reputation of our store! How do you expect such a distinguished customer to come and patronise this store again?”

Lin’s eyes were teary. She had been a big fool, if only she had minded her business and done her work well, she wouldn’t have to be in such a situation.

She dropped to her knees immediately. “Please, Mr. White, it won’t happen again. I regret my actions!’

“Of course, it will not happen again. You are fired!” With a cold look, Manager White walked away despite Ann’s pleadings.

Rex stepped out of the taxi and stared at the courtyard gate he was familiar with and was rather nervous about returning home. He wondered how his wife and her family would react to his homecoming.

His comrades in the army would be shocked if they saw how anxious their cold commander was right now all because of a woman.

Holding the gift box in his hand, he breathed in deeply and put on a small smile and was about to ring the bell. He heard sounds of laughter in the house.

“Mr. Fletcher, I can see the love in your eyes when you look at Lucia’s tummy. The child will definitely take after you.”

Alan took a step back. That voice was the voice of his mother in-law, Ann.

What child was she talking about? Is Lucia pregnant?

He shook his head. That can’t be possible. Lucia cannot betray him and lay with another man. It’s impossible! She loved him!

“Aunt, haven’t I told you to stop being formal to me? I’m your son in-law now; you don’t have to call me by my last name anymore.”

“Well, you both just got married and I’ve been used to calling you Mr. Fletcher. If you want me to stop then I can do that,” Ann said with a laugh.

Lucia remarried and she is pregnant? This wasn’t making any sense to Alan as his mind was thrown into a disoriented fit.

He will have to find out for himself!

Bang!

Bang!

“Who is it?” Ann shouted. “Hold on! Don’t break the door.”

“Mom, hold on. Let me get to the door.”

Alan’s heart skipped a beat at the sound of his wife’s voice, he just hoped whatever he heard was not true. Lucia would never give up on their love so easily!

“No, no! I can’t let you do that. You might hurt yourself and the baby,” Ann stated with worry.

“I’ll be fine. It might be the baby’s stuff I ordered. I want to be the first one to hold it.”

“Alright then, you have always been stubborn like your father. May he rest in peace,” Ann said a sad sigh.

“Aunt, you don’t have to be sad. I and Lucia are here for you, don’t worry,” Michael Fletcher said, comforting her.

 “Yes, mom.”

Alan was getting agitated. He was confused, he had heard all what they had said but he couldn’t believe it! He had to see for himself!

Raising his hand, he knocked again.

Bang! Bang!

“I’m warning you for the last time! Don’t break the door down! Lucia, please go check, I wonder why the delivery man is so impatient.”

Lucia opened the door and her face went pale immediately, her hand subconsciously moved to her protruding belly. Alan stared at her with shock and then at her stomach.

So it was true.

Lucia had indeed remarried and she had gotten pregnant!

“A-Alan, what are you doing here?”

“The supplier contracts have returned, sir,” Jasmine informed after greeting Alan in his office."Hm? So soon?” He turned around in his swiveling chair and gestured for her to place the hot cup of coffee on the table. She did so and stood back, " Three of the five that Fontaine Group had pulled away from Gold Aries' network over the preceding weeks have made contact through Mr Timothy's office, citing revised terms they wanted to discuss. Mr Tim handled two of them personally and assigned the third to a senior contracts manager, and by the end of the week all three had signed back into the Gold Aries supply chain on terms that were marginally better than their original agreements.”“Is that so?” Alan sighed, reaching for the coffee. He could feel a wave of headache coming in the next few days.…And so, he signed off on the paperwork on a Wednesday morning without making anything of it.The luxury goods division was next. Fontaine Group's new line had launched with reasonable coverage

If Trident had picked up his presence, the note made sense. They would want to know what he was doing here and whether his objectives aligned with or complicated their own. Mutual interests was the language of someone proposing a room for talk rather than a confrontation, which was at least a reasonable opening.Reluctantly, he went to the location at the time specified. It was a mid-range café in the commercial district, busy enough in the mid-morning that two people talking at a corner table would not be remarkable. He arrived early and took a seat with a view of the door. He ordered coffee and waited. The man who came in eight minutes after the specified time was unremarkable in every external detail. Medium height, middle age, a jacket that had been chosen specifically to not draw attention. He found John without scanning the room, which meant he already knew what he was looking for, and sat down across from him with the ease of someone accustomed to these kinds of meetings."Than

John Bones made the first contact on a Tuesday evening, through a man named Craw.Craw ran a small security outfit in Silver Lace's southern district, one that provided muscle for clubs and private events and asked no questions about the nature of the events in question. He was not powerful, not well-connected in any serious sense, but he was embedded, and embedded people knew other embedded people, and that was the point.John had been watching Craw's operation for four days before he made contact. He wanted to know the shape of the man before he sat across from him, which was a habit he had never broken regardless of how small the meeting. He walked into the bar where Craw held court on Tuesday evenings at eight-thirty, took a seat two down from him at the counter, ordered a beer, and waited.Craw noticed him by eight-forty-five. It was hard not to notice John Bones in most rooms, besides,.Craw was a man smart enough to notice who stood amongst normal men.He leaned over after a few

"It's close enough to the same thing that the distinction doesn't do much work," Alan replied sternly.Dane smiled at that, a short, genuine one. "Fair point.""Lucia." Alan dropped her name after a brief moment of silence.Dane set his glass down. "What about her?""You don't have to act so aloof. Hazel found out through other channels." Alan kept his voice even. "I want to understand what you asked her to do.""I asked her what you care about," Dane responded reluctantly. "I wasn't asking her to act against you. I was asking her to help me understand you."Alan narrowed his eyes. "Meaning?""I’m not particularly obliged to answer that question, Mr Walked,” Dane shrugged with a small smirk. He seemed to be enjoying his time ther. "But do not fear, I didn't ask her to do anything else. Whatever she's decided to do separately, that's her own."Alan sat with that for a moment. It tracked with what he understood of Lucia's calls, the solicitor visit, the documents she had told him about

In a small restaurant in the old district, away from the business centre, Alan was calmly seated at a table. He had eaten there twice before, once with Hazel and once alone, and he liked it because the tables were spaced properly and the staff were very good at their job. Their discretion was very professional and he would argue that they showed more etiquette than in higher-class restaurants. He arrived ten minutes early and took the corner table, the one with a clear view of the entrance and the secondary exit near the kitchen. It was an habit of his. He ordered water and looked at the menu without reading it.Dane arrived at exactly the agreed time. He wasn't a minute late, nor a minute early. The man was right on time, almost irking Alan.‘What is he trying to prove?’ Alan couldn't help but ask himself. No one would go that far just for the sake of it.Dane came alone, as Alan had specified. No Sera, no assistant, no lawyer hovering in a car outside. He wore a jacket without a tie

The documents had been sitting in the bottom of Lucia's wardrobe for six weeks, inside a manila envelope, underneath a stack of sweaters she hadn't worn since winter. She had put them there the day she came back from the solicitor, tucked them under the sweaters, and told herself she was waiting until she knew what she wanted to do with them. Six weeks later, she still hadn't moved them, which she had started to understand was itself the decision to keep not deciding, which worked right up until it stopped working. It stopped working on a Thursday morning.Michael had left early for a meeting with someone from the Donovan family's legal circle, which he had mentioned the night before in the offhand way he mentioned most things these days, a brief summary that didn't invite questions. She had nodded and gone back to Peace, who was at the stage where she demanded constant attention and rewarded it with the kind of complete, uncomplicated joy that made everything else feel smaller by com
