For years, Kellan swallowed his pride to live under his wife's family roof, mocked and dismissed, treated like nothing. He told himself it was worth it because he loved Vivian. Then she proved him wrong in the cruelest way possible. She kisses another man right in front of him. Insults him in front of everyone who ever looked down on him. Stands by laughing as her lover throws money in his face like he's a beggar. Kellan says nothing. He simply walks away. What none of them know is that the "worthless son-in-law" they've spent years humiliating is actually the missing heir to a fortune that could swallow their family whole, and he's done hiding. One by one, everything Vivian's family built starts to crumble. And when a woman who wants nothing from him but the truth walks into his life, Vivian realizes the husband she destroyed might be the one man she'll never get back. He was never as weak as they thought. Now they're about to find out just how strong he really is.

Chapter 1:The Live-In Husband

"Get out of my house."

Vivian's father said it quietly, which was somehow worse than shouting. Kellan stood in the doorway of the study with rain still dripping from his sleeves, a duffel bag over one shoulder, and understood immediately that something had gone very wrong before he'd even walked through the gate.

"Sir, I was told to come today. The wedding is in—"

"I know when the wedding is." The old man didn't look up from the papers on his desk. "I also know my lawyer called me an hour ago. Your background check came back empty, Kellan. Not clean. Empty. No school records past age twelve. No employment history before the warehouse. No family, no address, nothing. Like you didn't exist until three years ago."

Kellan said nothing. There was nothing safe to say.

"So here's what's going to happen." The father finally looked up, and his eyes were the flat, assessing eyes of a man who had spent forty years deciding what other people were worth. "You're going to marry my daughter tomorrow exactly as planned. You're going to live in this house, keep your head down, and never ask me a single question about why. And in exchange, I'm going to pretend I don't know you're hiding something, because right now, a husband with no past is exactly what I need."

"What do you need him for?" The voice came from the doorway.

Vivian stood there in a plain grey dress, arms crossed, looking at Kellan the way someone looks at a stray dog that's wandered into the yard, not cruel yet, just uncertain what to do with him.

"Nothing that concerns you," her father said.

"He's going to be my husband. I think it concerns me."

"Vivian."

"Answer me, or I'm not marrying him tomorrow."

Her father set down his pen. For a moment, something almost like respect crossed his face, gone as fast as it appeared.

"There's a merger closing in six months," he said finally. "The Kestrel deal. If it goes through, this family triples what we're worth. If it falls apart because certain people find out certain things about how your grandfather built this company, we lose everything. Everything, Vivian. This house. Your mother's name. All of it."

"What does that have to do with him?"

Her father looked at Kellan for a long moment, and Kellan felt, for the first time since walking through that gate, a cold and specific fear, the fear of being a piece on a board he couldn't see.

"Because in six months, someone is going to come looking for answers," her father said. "And when they do, I need a son-in-law nobody can trace. A man with no past to investigate. No family pressure. No name anyone would recognize." He almost smiled. "You wanted to know why I picked nobody, Vivian? That's why. He's not a husband. He's a wall."

The room went very still.

Kellan felt the duffel bag slide slightly on his shoulder and didn't move to catch it. A wall. That was the word the man had used, and it landed exactly where it was meant to, somewhere just beneath the ribs.

Vivian was looking at her father like she'd never seen him before, and then, slower, she turned that same look on Kellan, like he'd become something different too, not a person anymore, just a piece of furniture her family had bought to hide behind.

"Get him settled," her father said, already returning to his papers, already finished with both of them. "Wedding's at eleven tomorrow. Try to look like you love each other."

Vivian didn't move for a long moment. Then she walked past Kellan without a word, without even looking at him, and he followed her up a marble staircase that felt colder with every step, past photographs of a family that had just admitted, out loud, in front of him, that he existed only to be sacrificed if things went wrong.

She stopped outside a bedroom door and opened it without ceremony. Small. Plain. As far from the rest of the house as a room could be while still technically belonging to it.

"This is yours," she said.

"Vivian."

"Don't." She still hadn't looked at him properly, not once since the study. "I didn't know. About the wall thing. I want you to know I didn't know."

"Would it have changed anything if you did?"

She didn't answer that. She just stood there in the hallway, arms wrapped around herself like she was cold, and for a second Kellan thought she might actually say something honest.

Instead, a phone buzzed in her pocket. She glanced at it, and whatever softness had been in her face a moment ago disappeared, replaced by something tighter, more careful.

"I have to go," she said. "Someone's here to see me."

"Who?"

She was already walking away. "Nobody you need to worry about."

Kellan stood in the doorway of his new room and watched her disappear down the stairs, phone pressed to her ear, voice dropping low the way people's voices drop when they're saying something they don't want overheard.

He set the duffel bag down slowly.

A wall, he thought. He wants a man nobody can trace.

He almost laughed. If only the old man knew exactly how untraceable Kellan really was, and exactly how much of a mistake it had just been to explain, out loud, precisely why he needed him.

Downstairs, a door opened. A man's voice, low and familiar in a way that made something cold settle in Kellan's stomach, said Vivian's name like he'd said it a hundred times before.

Kellan walked to the top of the stairs and looked down through the railing.

Vivian was standing very close to a man in an expensive coat, the two of them talking in urgent, hushed voices, and even from here, even without hearing a single word, Kellan understood exactly what he was looking at.

Whatever tomorrow's wedding meant to her father, it clearly didn't mean the same thing to Vivian.
