Seeing Alan’s raised brow, Michael thought he was interested in his offer and he let out a smirk. ‘So, this punk was actually here to get a job after all.’

“Kneel before me and bark three times calling me your daddy and maybe I will speak to the President to give you a job as a cleaner after all it’s a job for bottom feeders like you.”

Alan was amazed at his brazen request. He wanted to publicly humiliate him.

As far as he knew, the President of this company hadn’t reported any contract with JK Enterprises. Such a large and powerful company within the city would naturally be highlighted in reports given to Timothy and himself.

So, there was a chance that Michael was lying and didn’t even have any ability to meet the Company President.

Also, it was really annoying to see Michael try to act all big and important. JK Enterprises were just a company trying to break into the big market, they were not even recognized on a sub-national scale yet.

‘Is this idiot trying to act like he can give me a job in my own company with such little background?’

Michael seemed to be a liar and a pretender, he had probably used lies to lure Lucia to his bed and Alan could only shake his head at her misfortune.

“Come on, do it. Don’t waste our time, Mr. Fletcher has an appointment that we can’t afford to be late for and this will be a one-time offer to help you earn a living,” Kira urged. “Go on, call him your daddy!”

“Do it or I’ll be forced to call the security on you and besides we shouldn’t even be urging you to do the right thing,” Michael was glowering with anger. Alan’s silence was even more demeaning!

“There’s no way I would do that and I am not here to get a job. I have an important meeting to attend and you both are wasting my time,” Alan replied.

Michael and Kira burst into profound laughter. “Did you hear that, K? He said he has a meeting to attend! Haha.”

“Alan, I thought you were only good-for-nothing, I didn’t know that you were so stupid and a liar and a bad one at that. I’m sure you are mistaken and you don’t even know where you are standing.”

“This is the Gold Aries, one of the most sought-after companies in this city and there’s no way you could possibly have an interview here not to talk of an appointment. This isn’t a playground or a beggar’s ground so leave or I’ll be forced to forget that you were once my brother-in-law and send the security to kick you out!” Kira roared.

“You had better listen to her and scram! Kira is the head of the HR department, she holds a very important position in this company and the security won’t waste a second before throwing you out of here.”

Alan glanced at his digital wristwatch, it was a little worn out from years of use in the army, after confirming that he was almost late, he strode into the lobby. He couldn’t be bothered to say anything to them anymore.

“Hold it!” Kira scurried forward to stop him, feeling furious. Had he grown thick skin overnight?

“Didn’t you understand what I just said? Don’t go further inside. Our company won’t accept someone like you! Your presence is a stain on this establishment.”

Alan glanced at Kira coldly, causing her to freeze in fear and then take a few steps back after being frightened by his gaze.

Since when did this punk develop such a terrifying gaze?

“Kira, get security to drive him away!”

A short distance away, a security officer immediately walked over when he noticed them. “What’s wrong?”

Kira furiously pointed at Alan, gaining back her stance. “This man was a convict in the past and he’s now trying to barge into our company. I hope the security department will perform their duties and get this man off the premises otherwise, don’t blame me for having your salaries deducted or worse, delayed!”

The security officer knew that this was a serious matter, after all, Kira was the head of the HR department and he couldn’t afford to make her angry. He glanced at Alan and decided to report the situation over his radio, worrying that he might not be able to stop him alone without resorting to violence.

Soon, a pot bellied man arrived with more than ten security officers.

Kira raised her chin smugly at Alan. “Mr. Harris, make sure to throw this man out of this premises with immediate effect.”

“Yes Ma!” The pot bellied man replied, nodding his small head.

“Seems your time is up now, Alan,” Michael said with a sly smile and he walked into the company with Kira.

Alan was soon surrounded by the officers. Harris’ face turned ugly immediately as he took a look at Alan’s cheap clothing.

“Are you going to get lost or do you want us to throw you out of here by ourselves?”

“Aren’t you even going to ask about my side of the story?” Alan asked, surprised that they took the words of Kira as truth without much thought.

Harris furrowed his brow at him and snorted. “Is that even necessary? Miss. Smith has ordered that you leave! Paupers must have gotten so confident nowadays to be barging into a prestigious company like this.”

Alan stared at him coldly. “So you are not only a snob but an obedient dog as well!”

“What did you just call me?!” Harris flew into a rage. This poor punk actually had the guts to call him a dog! He wouldn’t let him escape without breaking an arm and a leg.

He motioned at the officer beside him. “Beat this jerk to a pulp! Make sure you break some of his bones, let him know who’s the boss here, hehe!”

The security guards waved their batons with smirks on their faces, ready to attack. Alan’s face darkened instantly as he clenched his fists tightly.

If the Gold Aries were filled with these types of nuisances, then he wouldn’t waste time to get rid of them.

At that moment, a car drove over and a man hurriedly got off. When he saw the situation, he frowned deeply. “What’s going on here?”

“The supplier contracts have returned, sir,” Jasmine informed after greeting Alan in his office."Hm? So soon?” He turned around in his swiveling chair and gestured for her to place the hot cup of coffee on the table. She did so and stood back, " Three of the five that Fontaine Group had pulled away from Gold Aries' network over the preceding weeks have made contact through Mr Timothy's office, citing revised terms they wanted to discuss. Mr Tim handled two of them personally and assigned the third to a senior contracts manager, and by the end of the week all three had signed back into the Gold Aries supply chain on terms that were marginally better than their original agreements.”“Is that so?” Alan sighed, reaching for the coffee. He could feel a wave of headache coming in the next few days.…And so, he signed off on the paperwork on a Wednesday morning without making anything of it.The luxury goods division was next. Fontaine Group's new line had launched with reasonable coverage

If Trident had picked up his presence, the note made sense. They would want to know what he was doing here and whether his objectives aligned with or complicated their own. Mutual interests was the language of someone proposing a room for talk rather than a confrontation, which was at least a reasonable opening.Reluctantly, he went to the location at the time specified. It was a mid-range café in the commercial district, busy enough in the mid-morning that two people talking at a corner table would not be remarkable. He arrived early and took a seat with a view of the door. He ordered coffee and waited. The man who came in eight minutes after the specified time was unremarkable in every external detail. Medium height, middle age, a jacket that had been chosen specifically to not draw attention. He found John without scanning the room, which meant he already knew what he was looking for, and sat down across from him with the ease of someone accustomed to these kinds of meetings."Than

John Bones made the first contact on a Tuesday evening, through a man named Craw.Craw ran a small security outfit in Silver Lace's southern district, one that provided muscle for clubs and private events and asked no questions about the nature of the events in question. He was not powerful, not well-connected in any serious sense, but he was embedded, and embedded people knew other embedded people, and that was the point.John had been watching Craw's operation for four days before he made contact. He wanted to know the shape of the man before he sat across from him, which was a habit he had never broken regardless of how small the meeting. He walked into the bar where Craw held court on Tuesday evenings at eight-thirty, took a seat two down from him at the counter, ordered a beer, and waited.Craw noticed him by eight-forty-five. It was hard not to notice John Bones in most rooms, besides,.Craw was a man smart enough to notice who stood amongst normal men.He leaned over after a few

"It's close enough to the same thing that the distinction doesn't do much work," Alan replied sternly.Dane smiled at that, a short, genuine one. "Fair point.""Lucia." Alan dropped her name after a brief moment of silence.Dane set his glass down. "What about her?""You don't have to act so aloof. Hazel found out through other channels." Alan kept his voice even. "I want to understand what you asked her to do.""I asked her what you care about," Dane responded reluctantly. "I wasn't asking her to act against you. I was asking her to help me understand you."Alan narrowed his eyes. "Meaning?""I’m not particularly obliged to answer that question, Mr Walked,” Dane shrugged with a small smirk. He seemed to be enjoying his time ther. "But do not fear, I didn't ask her to do anything else. Whatever she's decided to do separately, that's her own."Alan sat with that for a moment. It tracked with what he understood of Lucia's calls, the solicitor visit, the documents she had told him about

In a small restaurant in the old district, away from the business centre, Alan was calmly seated at a table. He had eaten there twice before, once with Hazel and once alone, and he liked it because the tables were spaced properly and the staff were very good at their job. Their discretion was very professional and he would argue that they showed more etiquette than in higher-class restaurants. He arrived ten minutes early and took the corner table, the one with a clear view of the entrance and the secondary exit near the kitchen. It was an habit of his. He ordered water and looked at the menu without reading it.Dane arrived at exactly the agreed time. He wasn't a minute late, nor a minute early. The man was right on time, almost irking Alan.‘What is he trying to prove?’ Alan couldn't help but ask himself. No one would go that far just for the sake of it.Dane came alone, as Alan had specified. No Sera, no assistant, no lawyer hovering in a car outside. He wore a jacket without a tie

The documents had been sitting in the bottom of Lucia's wardrobe for six weeks, inside a manila envelope, underneath a stack of sweaters she hadn't worn since winter. She had put them there the day she came back from the solicitor, tucked them under the sweaters, and told herself she was waiting until she knew what she wanted to do with them. Six weeks later, she still hadn't moved them, which she had started to understand was itself the decision to keep not deciding, which worked right up until it stopped working. It stopped working on a Thursday morning.Michael had left early for a meeting with someone from the Donovan family's legal circle, which he had mentioned the night before in the offhand way he mentioned most things these days, a brief summary that didn't invite questions. She had nodded and gone back to Peace, who was at the stage where she demanded constant attention and rewarded it with the kind of complete, uncomplicated joy that made everything else feel smaller by com
