The next day, Ryan was busy cleaning the house and preparing breakfast for Violet and his in-laws, who had been sitting by the kitchen table since early morning.

It was a rare occurrence, really. They seldom set foot on the kitchen tiles, let alone not let him out of their gazes. Their presence alone made Ryan’s nerves on alert. What were they planning?

“You scum,” Marissa called him, voice croaked like a toad, and eyes red with heavy bags under them. He did not get her a glass of water as usual, deeming she could take it herself if only she walked three steps to her left. “What did you do to get all of that money?”

Ryan looked at his mother-in-law over his shoulder. “What money?”

“The money you bought Vernest with!”

Ryan hummed as he scrambled the eggs on the pan. He tried a new recipe, hoping that Violet would like it. “What are you talking about? I don’t really have any money, Mother.”

Marissa bristled as he called her by that. But, the newest Vernest handbag sat innocently on the kitchen table before she smothered her fury away. “You said you won a lottery.”

“Oh? Now you believe me?”

“Stop playing around, scum,” Robert interrupted. He didn’t like how smug Ryan was now, but that didn’t stop him from grilling questions for Ryan. “How much money did you win?”

“Let me see…” Ryan made a show of thinking aloud. “I don’t know. I guess it’s just too much that I lost count.”

“You useless–“

“Dear,” Marissa stopped her husband by placing a calming hand on his arm. “Remember what the doctor told you. Don’t stress over too much.”

Robert faltered. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. “I know it. Don’t remind me again.”

Ryan smirked to himself. Not to sound vile, but it was good to know that his father-in-law was prone to high blood pressure. If he was not careful, it could lead to a heart attack. At least, that was what the private doctor told the couple earlier today.

He couldn’t believe it.

His in-laws were the most affected from

Vernest’s acquisition last night. Marissa couldn’t sleep even for a wink, and Robert’s blood pressure increased almost to an alarming level that they needed to call their private doctor first thing in the morning.

Oppositely, Violet hasn’tdidn’t found out about his last shopping spree last night. To be precise, she hadn’t come back home since they parted from his new restaurant. He didn’t like the thought that she was spending the night with Ashton – but he couldn’t really do anything about it, could he?

After all, he was just a homeless stranger she was forced to marry, while Ashton was a Hollywood star who she worked with frequently.

Banishing the thought, Ryan focused on the task at hand. Violet would come back in time for breakfast. She had to. She had a schedule to film her part today in the studio, but her script was still in her room, sitting nicely on her study desk.

“Yes, my dear Violet?” Robert suddenly said.

Ryan turned around, expecting his wife. But it was just his father-in-law talking with her through his phone.

“Okay. Have a nice day, honey. I bet you’ll nail this role too!”

“Hey, scum.”

Ryan turned off the stove and picked up some plates. He served breakfast to his in-laws as he heard what Robert got to say.

“Violet wants you to bring her script to the set,” Robert said before wolfing the scrambled eggs and bacon before him. “Get there before eleven. And don’t tell anyone that you’re her husband, remember?”

“Yes, imagine how much shame you will bring to this family if you tell anyone that.” His mother-in-law added. Even if her words to Ryan were harsh, she had no problem eating the meal he made.

It was nothing new, so he just brushed it off without taking any feeling. However, he couldn’t deny that he felt a certain degree of happiness. Violet never asked him to bring her thing on set. It was a first. He wondered if Violet would let him into her life slowly.

Although, he knew that she only asked him because she had a beef with her ex-manager and fired him two months ago. She hadn’t found a new one. Surprisingly, no recommended managers from her agency agreed to work for her. They were too afraid after hearing the rumors that she liked to hit people when feeling upset.

Well, all the more fun. If the lack of her manager meant Ryan got to bring her things to her workplace, then he’d take it. He would finally see Violet in action.

How exciting!

But first, breakfast–

“What do you think you’re doing?” Robert asked when he saw Ryan take a plate meant for Violet.

“Violet’s not coming home, so I’ll eat it.”

Then, his father-in-law took all the bacon and more than half of the scrambled eggs to his own plate, leaving scraps for Ryan to eat.

Shoulders slumping, he walked out of the room and crouched against the wall. He quickly ate his breakfast or whatever was left of it, just like how it usually was. Even though he was the one who made them, he was forbidden to make a plate for himself and was only allowed to eat their leftovers.

Of course, Ryan could secretly make one for himself, as they rarely set foot in the kitchen, but he didn’t want to take what was not meant for him. It would be equal to stealing, and he abhors that.

Besides, he was just a homeless stranger invited to the Crowne family. He didn’t deserve more than what they gave.

Then, after breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, he bathed and wore his relatively best clothes. Another pair of old sweatpants previously belonged to Florent’s trash can and an oversized t-shirt with ‘Daily Express’ 2022 Crossword Contest’ printed on its front.

It was past rush hour, so the road was mostly empty. He drove fast and arrived at Violet’s shooting location a quarter before ten. And when he was welcomed with many trailers parked there, he just remembered that Robert didn’t tell him where Violet’s trailer was.

With a sigh, Ryan went to look for Violet’s name on the trailer’s door. After almost thirteen minutes of searching, he found her name and knocked on the door. No one answered. When he tried the handle, it was locked.

“Hey, who are you?”

Ryan was startled by the loud voice coming from his right. He turned and faced the newcomer, who was dressed in patchwork overalls with a ‘Crew’ tag hanging from his neck. “I’m… ugh, I was looking for Violet Crowne.”

“Miss Crowne is not there.” The crew in a funky overall said, sipping on his shake. “Who are you?”

“I’m–“

Peeep!

Almost impossible, even.Leaning back in his chair, Detective Pierce continued, "Let me tell you the short version of what I think happened. You murdered Jorge and left Edric for dead. You left straight from the party to the airport, trying to flee the scene of the crime.""That's ridiculous.""Why else would you leave Seattle in such a hurry? Were you planning to leave the country next?"Glaring, Ryan griped out a resounding, "No, I simply went home. If I wanted to run, I'd go anywhere but there, wouldn't you think?""It's not far-fetched for you to gather your things and prepare to disappear for good. "To Seattle's police jurisdiction. Now stop talking and walk."Following the orders to move, Ryan was taken to a small check-in station where an officer forcefully dipped each of his fingers in black ink, printing each digit on a white paper document.Once they were finished, he was escorted into another area, which was equipped with a digital camera and a large backdrop against the wall that was marked with varying heights. He inwardly sighed as he was given a small blackboard with his name to hold up.An officer instructed him to stand up straight and look towards the camera. He flinched as the flash sounded and wa

  • 151. Fight Against Luck

Violet was ready to fight him. She had trained in several martial arts and mastered them for self-defense against harmful men like him. Rendering Edric useless was an easy task. She had almost done that months ago, when he was still playing with his old dog. Come to think of it, where was that old dog of his again? Violet’s blue eyes were focused as she shifted into a defensive stance, her lithe frame ready for action. On the other hand, Edric appeared remarkably nonchalant, sitting at a table with a book and a wide grin on his face as if he knew something Violet didn’t. The first move came from the infamous actress. Her movements were swift and precise, as she had aimed a roundhouse kick at Edric’s head. The red dress with high open slit at her tight created a beautiful motion picture, if one were to enjoy it. Sadly, the circumstance was not fit for such approval. However, just as Violet’s foot was about to connect with Edric’s head, a stack of books toppled over, and he stumble
