"Just plain water, please," Lyra answered in her soft tone as she placed her hand designer purse on the glass table with a deliberate thud.

Wyatt gave a brief nod and walked toward the kitchen. He took every step slow and steady, and his mind filled with some confusion, wondering what to do next, how to manage this critical situation. He grabbed a glass from the cupboard, his hand shaking slightly. The faucet’s metallic hiss as he turned it on, automatically sensing the glass, and water rushed from the spout and filled the glass.

Then returned to the hall and placed the glass on a coaster, a thin, pressed line of his lips, a desperate attempt to show nothing.

Lyra took a slow sip and placed it on the table with a soft click, her gaze finally lifting to meet Alex’s. "You guys' friends?"

Alex's laugh was a bit too loud, a bit too eager. "Yeah, yeah, we work at the same company. Just discussing a project." He tried to project a casual confidence that neither of them felt.
