Ryan's POV

The living room was my temporary sanctuary. Lamplight painted warm strokes across the plush carpet and the muted explosions on the screen barely registered as I mindlessly crunched on chips.

Work had been a slog a constant pressure cooker of demands and expectations. This brief lull was pathetic but I clung to it like a lifeline. Then the front door slammed open and the illusion shattered.

“Ryan?” My father’s voice was clipped business-like even in our home. He stood in the doorway loosening his tie the picture of controlled power. “You're back early.”

“Yeah.” I mumbled not bothering to look at him. “Needed to unwind.”

He didn't immediately respond instead moving further into the room.

“Mind if I join you?”

I shrugged still focused on the stupid show. He settled into the armchair opposite me a silent judgment hanging in the air. Finally he broke the quiet.

“So.” he started his tone carefully neutral “about this… initiative of yours.”

My stomach tightened.

“What about it?

Liam's POVI heard the commotion before I saw it. A small crowd of reporters had gathered at the entrance of Carter Enterprises and were trying to force their way into the building.“What the hell?” I muttered under my breath as I slowly pulled the car into my parking space. What exactly was going on here?I could see Charles at the top of the entrance stairs at the entrance issuing quick commands to the security men. What was this noise all about? I wondered silently as I made my way towards the entrance.“Mr Carter!” A reporter saw me and quickly made a beeline for me. Soon enough, his colleagues realized what he was doing and in no time, the crowd came stampeding toward me.“Mr Carter, what do you have to say about the return of your Uncle?”“Is it true, Mr Carter? I

  • CHAPTER 108

Liam's POVFor the past half an hour I sat still, listening to my mom's story with our drinks forgotten on the table in front of us. Her story was quite the wild one and I admit, confusing and complicated as well. According to her account, she had met My father while she was a secretary, his secretary at Carter Enterprises. He was quite the womanizer too but when he met her, something in him clicked into place and it didn't take long before they realized they loved each other. With my father being from an aristocratic family, it was required of him as the eldest to marry and produce an heir to carry on the family name, business and legacy and my father chose my mom as the woman he loved but there were complications. For her safety, he refused to introduce her to his people and in secret, they got married away from his family and society's problems. His younger brother Tobias always suspected that he had a relationship with his secretary but it was no secret that Tobias wanted Carter

I clumsily got off the chair and approached her.“Mom,” I called.Even though I was happy to see her arrive safely, my body wasn't responding due to the events of the previous day, I guess.“Oh. Liam. It's good to see you again.” Mom said as she threw her arms around me and hugged me so passionately. For a brief moment, I just wanted to stay there. I wanted to remain there in her embrace, the one place where I felt safe and secure, but then I was a full-grown man now, I had to face and slay my demons. Now was no time to find shelter and refuge in my mom.<

  • CHAPTER 106

Liam's POVI pulled up at the parking lot just outside Hans' office so aggressively and earned myself a couple of raised eyebrows from the people around. My head kept replaying all that had happened that morning, and the more I thought about the whole situation, the more restless I felt. Even though I tried to keep my feelings at bay and approach Hans as calmly as possible, Tobias' cold and calculating eyes, his smirk and his calm nature kept getting on my nerves for obvious reasons.“How may I help you, sir?” A receptionist asked.I focused my attention on her, for once getting out of my thoughts. I strolled into the building and straight at the first desk I saw the entrance.“I have an appointment with Hans Hoffman,” I replied while holding out my identity card to the receptionist.“Oh, Mr Carter.” The lady smiled. “You look even younger in person. Perhaps even more handsome.” She winked.I didn't even react to her words. I already had enough on my plate and flirting with a recepti

Liam's POVCarter? Tobias Carter?I was shocked and momentarily paralyzed as I stared at the stranger before me. Looking at him closely, I could now see that I had some of his features like the green eyes, and the messy hair.. even though he had tried to comb and keep it neat it was still battling to be free just like mine too!“Dad?” I blurted the word out before I could restrain myself and then immediately regretted why I had said it out loud.“What?” The man's forehead cringed in a frown. “God no!” He exclaimed. “Are you okay?”I felt ashamed now and slowly got to my feet.“Wait outside,” I told Anna. She looked at me and then at Tobias and then at me again uncertainly but then she turned and left the office, closing the door behind her as she left.My attention immediately returned to Tobias who was scrutinizing me keenly as if I was a lab test.“Tobias Carter?” I asked in a slightly trembling voice. “Do you happen to be related to…”“Yes, that's the one.” He cut me off rudely at

  • CHAPTER 104

Liam's POVI stood still by the window, holding the phone tightly to my ear. My mom’s words—“It’s about your father”—kept repeating in my head. I felt cold all over.“Mom, what is it? What’s wrong? Tell me!” I said, my voice shaking. Outside, the city lights looked blurry, just like how I felt inside. She was quiet for a moment. The call had strange sounds, like static, and it felt like someone else might be listening. “Liam… I… It’s hard to explain,” she finally said, her voice soft and shaky.I held the phone tighter. “Mom, please. Just say it. Is Dad okay? What’s going on?”She paused again. Then, in a whisper so quiet it gave me chills, she said, “Tobias is back.”Tobias. I had never heard that name before. But it sounded serious and scary.“Mom, who is Tobias?” I asked quickly. “Is he part of this? Is he connected to Dad? What does this mean?”She didn’t answer right away. The silence made me feel like I couldn’t breathe. The strange sounds on the call grew louder. At last, she s
