A Bitter Anniversary
Ashton Reed had everything mapped out. A promising future, a degree from a prestigious college, and a girlfriend he’d been with for three years, Zoe Matthews.
Today, of all days, was supposed to be the day it all came together.
He was a step closer to landing his dream job in finance. But there was one glaring issue. Despite his intelligence, his hard work, his effort, he had failed every single job interview so far.
He couldn’t figure it out. What was wrong?
He knew he was qualified, more than qualified. The initial phone calls were full of promise but when it came time for the interviews, it all fell apart. Something wasn’t clicking. Each time he walked out of a corporate office, his hands were shaking.
How could he give his girl the life she deserved?
That morning had been no different.
The hiring manager, a middle-aged man with cold eyes, barely glanced at Ashton’s resume. Instead, he skimmed through it with a sigh before firing off questions that had no real connection to Ashton’s qualifications.
“So, tell me, Ashton, why do you think you’re a good fit for this role?”
Ashton answered as confidently as he could. “I’m eager to learn, I’m results-driven, and I’m passionate about helping companies thrive. I believe I can bring value to your team.”
The manager scoffed, “Who cares about your passion? You're a nobody, Ashton Reed, your fancy degree is useless here.”
Shocked, Ashton was too dumbfounded to speak. What had he said wrong?
Ashton’s heart dropped, but he forced himself to stay calm. “I believe I can adapt quickly, I'll do all you need me to.”
"Listen, prestigious people come to our company,” the man looked at him disdainfully. “There's no opening for a low class man like you. Just leave my office." He sneered and gestured at the door.
That was it. That was all. The interview was over.
As he closed the door, he could hear the manager get on the phone with someone. “Don't worry, he's been dismissed." He said.
Ashton didn't know what that meant. But once again, he was dismissed without so much as a handshake, his hopes of landing the job dashed.
He left the building, feeling distraught. Today was his anniversary with Zoe. They'd been together for two years.
He hadn’t been able to surprise her with anything extravagant, but the cake he had in mind would mean something.
He rang her up, about to announce that he was coming home early to celebrate. But she didn't pick up.
Ashton tried again, tapping the screen impatiently. The phone rang and rang, but she didn’t pick up. “Must be busy,” he muttered to himself,l.
Walking into a nearby pastry shop, Ashton was excited as he approached the counter.
A friendly young waiter greeted him.
“How can I help you today?” the waiter asked.
“I’m looking for something special,” Ashton said, beaming. “It’s my girlfriend’s anniversary today, and I want to get her something that will make her smile.”
“That's very thoughtful. She must be very lucky."
He glanced at the selection of cakes behind the glass. “Something fancy. She’s a fan of chocolate.”
“Ah, I’ve got just the thing,” the waiter said enthusiastically, reaching for a chocolate cake. “This one’s got a rich, velvety frosting. It’s our best seller.”
Ashton smiled weakly, nodding. “Perfect. I’ll take it. I’m sure she’ll love it.” He handed over his card, and the waiter quickly packaged the cake, placing it carefully in a box.
It was expensive. But he'd saved up a long time just to treat her to something nice.
He left the shop with the cake in hand, a small victory in an otherwise disappointing day.
When he arrived home, the first thing he noticed was the strange car parked in the front yard.
It was an expensive Rolls Royce and he hadn't ever seen such a brand in their quiet neighborhood.
He shook his head, pushing the strange feeling aside as he dropped his bag on the couch. Zoe’s keys were still in the bowl by the door. She must have been home.
Then, he heard it, he heard the unmistakable sound of a man’s voice.
Ashton was startled. He couldn't exactly hear what he said but it was a deep baritone that sounded nothing like Zoe's melodious voice.
“Zoe?" He called out softly as he made his way up the stairs into the hallway.
Who had parked the car outside? Who was in their home? Did she have a work colleague over?
These thoughts played in his head as he marched to their bedroom door.
And that was when he heard another sound.
It belonged to Zoe. She was laughing heartily.
Ashton’s heart skipped a beat, but he shook his head again, trying to convince himself it was nothing.
Maybe she was on the phone with a friend, or maybe it was a TV show. But the sounds grew louder and more distinct.
Then he recalled the car in the front yard. Zoe was home. But she wasn't alone.
Ashton shook and the cake wobbled in his hands as he heard the unmistakable sound of moaning.
He moved cautiously toward the bedroom, every instinct telling him to turn around, to leave, but his feet wouldn’t obey.
Ashton’s hand shook as he reached for the door. He could hear Zoe’s voice now, a soft gasp and a very loud moan.
“You're a naughty little minx!" A deep baritone voice laughed.
"I'm your minx, baby. You get me so wet,” Zoe replied and moaned dramatically.
Ashton couldn't breathe. How could this be happening on their anniversary? In their home.
“Come on, what do you think your loser boyfriend is doing right now?" The masculine voice asked mockingly.
Zoe laughed heartily and replied, “What else can a loser be doing?"
“That’s right, getting rejected by another manager," the man chuckled.
They knew about his rejection. They were making a mockery of him.
Ashton had heard enough and he flung the door open.
Right there was Zoe on the bed, completely naked, with
a man draped around her, their sweaty bodies plastered.
The cake fell off and landed messily on the floor.

Rebirth Through FireThe glass doors of the hospital exploded open as Ashton and Augustine barreled through the entrance. Ashton’s breath came in short, sharp gasps and the adrenaline was pumping so hard it numbed the pain in his ribs. Augustine was right behind him, sweat glistening on his temple. “Where are they?!" Augustine asked at once. They were racing with time and the cars were right behind them. “The VVIP hospital ward. I had Lancaster put his men there but I don't know the state of things right now since he's travelling with us out of the city." Ashton replied. With the way Lancaster had been helping them, it was going to be suicide if he kept staying here. He had to leave too. "Hey! You can't be in here!" shouted one of the security guards stationed by the reception as he saw them break in. They didn’t stop. Ashton slammed his shoulder into the first guard, sending the man sprawling. Augustine elbowed another, spinning him into the row of chairs by the wall. The hos

The BreakpointAshton and Augustine drove off speedily Lancaster had assured them that he would have Gabriel and the entire Monroe family taken care of by his men. Now, all they had to do was get home and take their family with them. The safe house was tucked away behind a line of rundown warehouses on the outskirts of the city, nothing but rusted gates and cracked pavements leading to a pale grey structure that was eerily quiet. Ashton and Augustine leapt out of the blacked-out car the moment Lancaster hit the brakes and rushed inside the building. “Move fast, boys,” Lancaster barked as he killed the engine. “Grab what you need. We don’t have much time. They're mobilizing. We leave in fifteen.”The two brothers rushed into the house, like they were racing against death itself. And in a way, they were. The Monroes weren't to be messed with. They were one of the biggest and most feared families in the city. And now, they had themselves in their bad book. “Come on! We have to hea

Brother Against the WorldEveryone looked at Augustine like he'd lost his mind. “What's going on?” Celeste crooked, barely able to speak from Augustine's tight grip. "Shut up! I've got a freaking gun to your head. You'll do well to keep shut, missy.” Gabriel was staring with his jaw dropped. "Did you really think I'd betray my brother?” They all hissed at him. “You bloody traitor! I knew you'd never stand by our side!" Sebastian roared angrily, with his gun now facing Augustine instead of Ashton. “You'll be sorry if you pull that trigger. I'll make sure her brain splatters all over this bloody place!" Augustine hissed. Celeste gasped loudly, “Daddy, please. Help me." Gabriel held up his hands. "Let my daughter do and we'll assume none of this ever happened.” "Not happening. We walked in here ready to kill my brother. What makes you think I'll let your daughter go so easily?” “Don't you dare hurt her!" Gabriel hissed. Augustine smiled, “I will. Unless you let me and Ashton

The ReckoningAshton hissed below his breath. Veronica was right. Celeste couldn't be trusted. And yet, here he was, walking right into a trap. A trap he should have known. “I guess Veronica was right about you," he said lazily, folding his arms. There were guns right at his face but he didn't act bothered. Celeste laughed loudly. “Did you really think I'd let you walk away and marry that tiny little crazy thing?" Ashton chuckled. “It's funny you're calling her crazy. She has been cured. I can't say the same about you." Celeste hissed at him, “Whatever, you're not going back to her. And you're certainly going to pay for all the things you've done to my family." The place was enclosed. The walls of the house seemed to be padded with some material and there was only one way in and one way out. The front door. What stood by the left looked like a window but it was too tall. Too far from the ground that he'd have to leap to reach it. And what chances did he have? They all were a

The TrapCeleste?! This had to be a bad dream. Could she really be telling the truth or was this all a prank? Ashton knew that Celeste was all shades of crazy but she had never tried to prank him and why would she speak of something so serious if it really hadn't happened? "Hello?"Ashton was quickly drawn out of his thoughts when he continued to hear her voice over the phone. “It is me, Celeste,” she repeated, thinking he did not hear her the first time. "I heard you the first time. I just don't understand what you just said.” "Ashton," a trembling voice whispered. "You have to help me. My father has been kidnapped, and my brother is in danger."He recognized the voice no doubt but he couldn't help but wonder what had gone wrong? Marcel was powerless, he was now in the FBI net, how then did he get to kidnap Celeste's family? And who had told him that he and Celeste had any form of acquaintance? But today, he watched something else.Marcel Green, his father, his tyrant, his enemy, was being loaded into the back of a black FBI vehicle, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back, his usually pristine suit rumpled and a little dusty. As soon as he stepped out the front door, the agents flanked him on both sides. They had come prepared considering the news they heard. Marcel tried to speak to one of them, to protest, to plead, but no one gave him a second glance. “I am being set up! You have to listen to me! You have to believe me!”His voice, once commanding and lethal, was swallowed by the sound of the engine roaring to life. No one cared. No one l
