"Ah!"

Mason Alvarez shrieked, her face turning scarlet. She scrambled to her feet, hands covering the now-gaping tear in her yoga pants, and bolted toward Alice’s room in a panic.

Outside, Alice was leisurely sipping her drink when Mason came sprinting past, yelping in distress.

She blinked.

"Joseph, what just happened?" she asked as Joseph emerged from the gym.

Joseph cleared his throat, looking away awkwardly.

"Her pants… uh… tore," he muttered, his face flushing slightly.

"Pfft—!"

Alice nearly choked on her water, spraying it in surprise.

"Seriously? But my yoga pants are high-quality! They shouldn’t tear that easily!" she exclaimed in disbelief.

Joseph shrugged. "I have no idea. You should go check on her yourself."

Without hesitation, Alice dashed into her room.

Inside, she found Mason Alvarez sitting on her bed, her lower half wrapped tightly in a blanket.

"Mason-senpai, what happened?" Alice asked, her voice filled with concern.

"Waaah, Alice, I’m ruined! Completely ruined!"

“Oh, please—don’t pin it all on me. You act proper, but who knows what’s going on in that head of yours.”Mason Alvarez shot back, a little defiant.Alice was in too good a mood to spar with her. After so much time with Joseph, Alice’s cooking had improved dramatically. She still couldn’t quite match him, but she was close. The whole house was filled with the rich fragrance of dinner. When the last bit of prep was done, Alice took her seat at the table. It was laden with dishes—an abundant spread.Vrrrm.Just then, the sound of a car drifted in from outside.“Joseph’s back.”Alice hurried out at once.Mason followed quickly behind. After parking, Joseph stepped inside. But when Alice and Mason saw him, they froze. He was bruised and scuffed, his white shirt smeared with dirt and blood. He looked utterly spent—worn thin.“What’s with the staring?”Joseph asked, seeing them stand there, stunned.“Joseph… is that blood? Are you hurt? What happened to you? How did you end up like this?”“

“The most important thing right now is to get your body back in shape.”“Once you’ve recovered, we’ll tell you everything we know.”Neil Foster paused, as if weighing his words, then spoke to Joseph.“All right. I’ll wait for your call.”Joseph could only agree, helplessly. On the way back to the West Mountain training base, Joseph and Neil chatted about trivialities—work, life—nothing more.Half an hour later, they pulled up outside the West Mountain base.“Professor Wilson, you can still drive, right? You seem steady enough.”Neil got out with Joseph, sounding him out.“Much better.”“I was just worn out. Driving shouldn’t be a problem.”Joseph replied.“It’s been a long time since you’ve fought at this intensity—dancing on the edge between life and death. You may find it brings new insight, and it may stir old memories.”“Coach Adams and I want you to take some time to digest what this fight has given you.”Neil’s tone carried real weight.“Okay. I understand.”“Dean Foster, I’ll h

“That’s just how ordinary people think. The ones who make it here accept that death could come at any moment.”“Even if they die, no one will ever know how it happened. It’s as if someone simply vanished from the face of the earth.”Brian Adams spoke with complete indifference.“I’ve passed your trial. Now you should be able to tell me everything, right?”Joseph drew a deep breath. He’d said “you all,” not “you.” With Neil Foster standing here, Joseph was now certain that Neil and Brian shared an unusual bond.“You brought me three golden seals that day. Do you still have them on you?”Brian Adams asked in a calm, even tone.“Of course.”Joseph replied as he took out the three golden seals.“Hand them to me.”Brian Adams said to Joseph.Hearing this, Joseph didn’t hesitate. He passed all three seals to Brian Adams.Brian weighed the seals in his palm, studying them in a thoughtful silence.“Dragon Seal, Tiger Seal, Golden Horse Seal—each belongs to a different person.”“The Dragon Sea

Once the two dozen black-clad fighters took their positions, they charged without hesitation. Joseph braced and met them head-on.With so many blades in play, blood was inevitable. Soon the saber in Joseph’s hand was slick with it.There was no alternative. They were too many. The only way through was to strip them of combat power, fast. All he could promise himself was not to take lives. Nothing more.By the twenty-minute mark, Joseph was bleeding too—surface wounds only, nothing that slowed him down.It took him more than half an hour to put the group down for good. His strength clearly exceeded their expectations. These weren’t street punks swinging pretty fists; they were trained killers, each capable of taking on ten. And yet, before Joseph, none of them gained an inch. Worse, he cut through and walked away intact. Shock gave way to resignation. With the twenty-plus fighters dealt with, Joseph moved on.In the forest, the checkpoints Brian Adams had set far exceeded anything Jose

The red dot centered over his heart made Joseph’s pulse jolt. He slipped aside on instinct.A dull report—bang—followed a beat later. He’d already moved. If he’d waited for the shot to react, he’d be a corpse. Bullets outrun sound—sniper rounds most of all.He rolled behind cover, breath harsh and fast. If not for the shadows masking him, if not for that fleeting glimpse of the laser sight, he would have died with a hole through his chest. They weren’t pulling punches. They wanted him dead. His jaw tightened. Heat surged in his veins—familiar, ravenous. A bloodthirst he hadn’t felt in a long time pressed against his ribs like something waking.Anyone who comes for my life should lose theirs. The thought struck like a spark—wild, reckless. He wanted to kill the sniper hidden in the trees. A whisper—dark and insistent—uncoiled in his mind, urging him to finish it.But reason tugged the other way. He hovered at the edge between impulse and restraint. That near-fatal shot had shaken somet

“He should be able to,” Brian Adams exhaled, though uncertainty colored his tone. “I only ordered the kid to leave the forest on a stretcher. I didn’t order anyone to kill him.”He turned to go, but Neil Foster caught his arm.“What did you say? ‘Should?’ Old Adams, what is that supposed to mean? Are you telling me you don’t even know whether he’ll make it out alive?“If something happens to him, how are you going to answer to the general who died?”Neil’s composure cracked; panic washed the color from his face.“If he can’t pass a trial like this, how could he ever amount to anything?” Adams said quietly.“He shouldn’t have held back just now. He should’ve killed you with a single punch,” Neil shot back, livid.“If he could have killed me, I wouldn’t have objected,” Adams replied, utterly unfazed.“You—” Neil flushed a furious red.Adams shook free of his grip and walked off. Neil hurried after him.Once Joseph entered the forest, he relied on his senses, moving deeper along a quiet
