Joseph looked at the old man and was momentarily speechless.

If he didn’t accept it, the old man might really fall into depression.

“Well, since you insist, I’ll hold on to it for now,”

Joseph said helplessly.

“That’s good, that’s good. You take it.”

“Suddenly, I feel much better,”

Old Mr. Cooper said, his spirits lifting the moment Joseph took the check, as if a great weight had been lifted from him.

Joseph couldn’t help but feel a bit exasperated.

“Grandpa, I’ve asked the servants to bring your lunch in. If there's nothing else, I’ll go have lunch with my brother-in-law,”

Heidi said softly.

“Go on, don’t worry about this old man. You young people should enjoy your time together,”

the old man replied with a wistful sigh.

“Heidi’s already eighteen now. Not a little girl anymore.”

That last comment struck Joseph as a bit odd, as though the old man were deliberately reminding him of something.

He glanced deeply at Heidi — their eyes met, and for a brief moment, neither looked aw

“W-wait!”Seeing what they were about to do, Joseph flushed to the ears.“Joseph, we’re only doing this for your sake.”Alice’s eyes shone with earnest concern.“Ahem, I’ll handle it myself.”Joseph cleared his throat and tugged his pants down.Mason moved in and began treating the wounds. From Alice’s angle, it looked for all the world like Mason was crouched doing something… questionable. The image flashed through her mind, and her cheeks warmed. Then shame pricked her. The old lady was tending to Joseph, serious and meticulous—how could she let her thoughts run wild?Joseph’s legs, like his torso, bore more than a few cuts. None were grave, but none could be ignored.Kneeling between Joseph’s legs, Mason carefully cleaned and dressed the wounds. This close, his scent was unmistakable—warm and distinctly male. She felt her face heat.It was achingly familiar. His scent—his alone.Every time it reached her, it sent her pulse quickening. But now was not the time to drift. She had twee

“Fine.”Joseph could only relent. He knew his injuries were superficial, yet Alice and Mason Alvarez were acting as if he’d been mortally wounded. Was this what people meant by love turning to panic?Still, he let it go. He was genuinely depleted and needed fuel fast.He ate and drank heartily for half an hour, until the hollow in his stomach eased.Fortunately, Alice had prepared a feast. After dinner, they shooed him off to shower.Mason and Alice took the chance to grab a quick bite themselves. When Joseph came out of the bathroom, towel-dry and clean, he didn’t see them in the living room.Puzzled, he headed to his bedroom. It was still early—surely they weren’t turning in already. What were those two up to now?He eased his door open—and stopped short.Alice and Mason were both in his room.“Professor Wilson, you’re done. Come here. Sit. I’ll get the salve on.”Mason beckoned him in.“No need to rush, is there?”Joseph tried a smile.“Joseph, here’s hot tea. If you’re thirsty, ju

“Oh, please—don’t pin it all on me. You act proper, but who knows what’s going on in that head of yours.”Mason Alvarez shot back, a little defiant.Alice was in too good a mood to spar with her. After so much time with Joseph, Alice’s cooking had improved dramatically. She still couldn’t quite match him, but she was close. The whole house was filled with the rich fragrance of dinner. When the last bit of prep was done, Alice took her seat at the table. It was laden with dishes—an abundant spread.Vrrrm.Just then, the sound of a car drifted in from outside.“Joseph’s back.”Alice hurried out at once.Mason followed quickly behind. After parking, Joseph stepped inside. But when Alice and Mason saw him, they froze. He was bruised and scuffed, his white shirt smeared with dirt and blood. He looked utterly spent—worn thin.“What’s with the staring?”Joseph asked, seeing them stand there, stunned.“Joseph… is that blood? Are you hurt? What happened to you? How did you end up like this?”“

“The most important thing right now is to get your body back in shape.”“Once you’ve recovered, we’ll tell you everything we know.”Neil Foster paused, as if weighing his words, then spoke to Joseph.“All right. I’ll wait for your call.”Joseph could only agree, helplessly. On the way back to the West Mountain training base, Joseph and Neil chatted about trivialities—work, life—nothing more.Half an hour later, they pulled up outside the West Mountain base.“Professor Wilson, you can still drive, right? You seem steady enough.”Neil got out with Joseph, sounding him out.“Much better.”“I was just worn out. Driving shouldn’t be a problem.”Joseph replied.“It’s been a long time since you’ve fought at this intensity—dancing on the edge between life and death. You may find it brings new insight, and it may stir old memories.”“Coach Adams and I want you to take some time to digest what this fight has given you.”Neil’s tone carried real weight.“Okay. I understand.”“Dean Foster, I’ll h

“That’s just how ordinary people think. The ones who make it here accept that death could come at any moment.”“Even if they die, no one will ever know how it happened. It’s as if someone simply vanished from the face of the earth.”Brian Adams spoke with complete indifference.“I’ve passed your trial. Now you should be able to tell me everything, right?”Joseph drew a deep breath. He’d said “you all,” not “you.” With Neil Foster standing here, Joseph was now certain that Neil and Brian shared an unusual bond.“You brought me three golden seals that day. Do you still have them on you?”Brian Adams asked in a calm, even tone.“Of course.”Joseph replied as he took out the three golden seals.“Hand them to me.”Brian Adams said to Joseph.Hearing this, Joseph didn’t hesitate. He passed all three seals to Brian Adams.Brian weighed the seals in his palm, studying them in a thoughtful silence.“Dragon Seal, Tiger Seal, Golden Horse Seal—each belongs to a different person.”“The Dragon Sea

Once the two dozen black-clad fighters took their positions, they charged without hesitation. Joseph braced and met them head-on.With so many blades in play, blood was inevitable. Soon the saber in Joseph’s hand was slick with it.There was no alternative. They were too many. The only way through was to strip them of combat power, fast. All he could promise himself was not to take lives. Nothing more.By the twenty-minute mark, Joseph was bleeding too—surface wounds only, nothing that slowed him down.It took him more than half an hour to put the group down for good. His strength clearly exceeded their expectations. These weren’t street punks swinging pretty fists; they were trained killers, each capable of taking on ten. And yet, before Joseph, none of them gained an inch. Worse, he cut through and walked away intact. Shock gave way to resignation. With the twenty-plus fighters dealt with, Joseph moved on.In the forest, the checkpoints Brian Adams had set far exceeded anything Jose
