Chapter 7

“Ms. Henderson, I do appreciate the offer. Unfortunately no one can talk me out of leaving, there're so many ways to handle the bullying but quitting my job is not one. The only reason I'm here today is to resign.” He said matter-of-factly.

“The company has served its purpose, now it's time for me to leave.”

Lena was perplexed by Rowan's rejection, she didn't see any reason for him to turn down her offer.

A promotion and salary raise was more than enough reason for anyone to stay but Rowan wasn't anyone.

He was the boss of the top conglomerate in the world. Only a day's profit from one of his groups could cater for the entire city.

Lena was about trying to convince Roman to rethink his decision when her phone rang. It was Gilbert Felix.

Lena took her phone and stepped out to take the call.

Rowen didn't know what the other party said but Lena's expression became grim as she replied.

“Mr. Felix, what do you mean buy. It was because of your assurance that I took on such a risky project. We were supposed to work on this together.”

Silence lingered.

“You're aware that all the company's funds had been invested into this project and now you're telling me you're backing out.”

“Why didn't you say so before I invested everything I had in it?” Her pretty face turned stony with a frown.

“I trusted you, and you decided to play me for a fool. You know this would disrupt the cash flow in your company if it doesn't start showing results in three months.”

“Mira’s uncle.” Roman read.

“How is it supposed to show results if my partner backs out?”

“Mr. Felix, I don't know what you…. Hello? Mr. Felix? Can you hear me?”

Beep… beep… beep.

The call ended.

Lena felt like the whole world was spinning after the call ended.

Her phone slipped out of her hand as she stared into space. The sound of the phone hitting the ground brought her back to her senses.

She quickly bent down and picked up the phone. She tried dialing Felix number again but it wasn't going through. It was obvious that he had blocked her line.

Lena tightened her grip on her phone, her knuckles turning white. She took a deep breath to calm herself before turning to face Roman.

“I have something to handle urgently, I will be back soon, don't leave before I return.”

He was aware of the company's latest investment. The project was one with great potential, but he was against it, Lena agreeing to take such a risk out of persuasion from such a witty, sinister man like Gilbert. A man for a way to disgrace and enslave good women. Not Mira. But Lena.

“Maybe he has an interest in her. Looking for a way to land her in trouble, then force her to be with him…. as the only remedy.” He growled within, tight-fisted.

Gilbert had tuned Lena to pull out huge capital from the company's account to make a high-risk investment in the bankrupt sister company, Yanks, supplier of interior decors accessories hoping it will hold it up.

And this Lena did without signing a legal binding contract with Gilbert. To show she didn't do it out of her own accord but was ordered to do so.

Too bad Lena believed his bullshit, she should have suspected that something was wrong when he had asked her to invest first while he sorted his finances.

Lena had high hopes for the project and had decided that it would be the company's main investment for the rest of the year and she had invested a lot because of the potential return of the project.

Roman felt like Gilbert was trying to get a hold on Lena. He was after one of two things, one more profit from the project or two sex.

Now he sees the investment is crashing and turns to blame her, asking her to return the money. He might actually want the both because in a situation like this the chances of him getting both was high.

The more Roman thought about it the more he felt inclined to get involved.

He wasn't doing it out of kindness, he also has his own selfish reasons.

To add to that the company didn't need that much money, just a couple of millions. It won't even be noticed if it left his account. With this not only would he be doing Lena a favor he would also become the largest shareholder in the company.

At this thought he smirked, it was time to put some people in their place. A perfect opportunity for revenge.

With this thought he followed Lena. By the time he got there Lena had already driven off.

He returned to the company and decided to wait for her there.

When he entered he felt burning gazes on him but he remained unbothered. They were the least of his problems.

“You must be pleased with yourself? What did you say to the boss that made her cancel our bonus?”

“We were just joking around with you, why did you have to take it seriously? Do you know what I had planned to do with that money now it's gone all thanks to you.”

“We've been working together for months. Do you have to be this heartless?”

“Roman, you’d better go back and get the boss to return the bonus if not I will deal with you. When that time comes to blame me for being mean!”

“You better have my bonus returned to me if not!”

Roman watched them buzzing around like flies. In the three years that he had been working with them he had lost count of the number of times they had threatened to beat him but no one had ever dared.

It is not that they didn't want to, they just couldn't. With the natural oppressive aura radiating from him, instilling fear in them, all they could do was just talk.

Rowan smirked he couldn't wait to see their faces when he became their boss!

The envelope showed up with no courier label, no sender details, only a silver seal Roman recognized at once. The mark of Greaves International, the private intelligence agency that dealt with problems too sensitive for official systems. Its director, Marcus Vane, still carried a debt to Roman that could never truly be settled. Six years earlier, Roman had saved his daughter during a kidnapping case that never reached the press. Messages from Vane were rare, and when they came, it was never good news.Roman opened the seal alone in his study. Inside was just one typed sheet, it was plain, stripped of anything unnecessary, written in cold, clinical language.SUBJECT: Cross, Damian. Inmate #4471-K.FACILITY: Blackwood Containment Centre, Sector 4.INCIDENT: Coordinated breach. 6 days prior. Two security officers deceased. Three inmates hospitalised. “It was Reuben,” he said quickly. “My senior aide. My chief of staff.” His words came out fast, almost desperate, like speaking faster could reduce the damage.“He did it without telling me. He leaked the Elara story to hurt your infrastructure deal. He saw your campaign gaining support from that deal and thought destroying it would protect my position. He believed he was helping me.”Roman’s face stayed calm and unable to read. “Why would he think that?”Halden shut his eyes for a brief moment. When he opened them again, the emotion was clear on his face, it was a deep shame, he felt exposed and open.“Because he was being paid. Holloway.”The name hit the room like something heavy was dropping into a still water.“Holloway got to him months ago. He paid him. Reuben had been feeding him information, influencing campaign decisions, and pushing me into choices that helped Holloway’s interests. I didn’t know any of it. I only found out after the story came out. By then, it was already t

The rally was scheduled for the afternoon.Roman showed up at the venue by eleven. The stadium parking area was already packed with cars and people. Banners flapped in the morning wind while vendors lined the edges of the crowd, selling water, caps, and buttons featuring Halden’s face. At the north end of the grounds, a stage had been set up, complete with huge screens and speakers the size of small refrigerators. About fifteen thousand people were expected, and judging by how the crowd kept growing, that number would easily be reached.Roman went in through a side gate marked “STAFF ONLY.” Carlos followed closely behind him, walking just two steps back. A slim leather bag hung from Carlos’s shoulder. Inside that bag was a printed transcript.Carlos did not ask Roman what he planned to do with it. He never questioned him or tried to understand the details. In the car earlier, he had simply handed the bag over without a word, as if he already accepted that Roman had a reason for every

The boardroom at Crestfield Group smelled of old wood polish and stale coffee. Twelve people sat around the long mahogany table, and not one of them looked comfortable. Smith sat near the middle, hands resting on a thin leather folder. He wore a grey suit and had arrived early. He spent those extra minutes sitting silently, watching the others file in.They knew who he worked for. Everyone in the room knew.Harold Vance, the chief financial officer, barely glanced at him. Gerald Crane, head of operations, shuffled papers loudly. Two junior board members looked at Smith like a door they had been told not to open. Smith gave no reaction. He had been a butler for twenty-three years. He knew how to sit still while being watched.Edward Finch, the chairman, called the meeting to order at ten. The agenda was routine for forty minutes. Revenue reports. Supply chain updates. A dispute with a shipping partner. Smith listened and said nothing. He took no notes. He didn't need to.When Finch ask

Angela Webb, his chief legal counsel, was known for her speed and precision. She arrived in seventeen minutes with the agreement already pulled up on her tablet.“Clause nine,” Roman said as she entered.Angela was already in the room.“Non-disclosure,” she said without hesitation, scanning the document. “It’s broad and strict. It covers any public statements, interviews, written accounts, broadcasts, and social media posts involving Roman Walcott, Walcott Corporation, Walter Group, and all connected people or organizations. Mira Donaldson signed it as part of her early release from the legal case.”She paused and looked into his eyes.“It’s solid,” she continued. “Completely enforceable.”“Send a formal notice to The Meridian Pulse tonight,” Roman said. “If you have to, wake their legal team. Make it clear that airing any part of that interview breaks a binding legal agreement. The first step will be an injunction. After that, a lawsuit that will make their quarterly profits irreleva

Mira said nothing for a few seconds. On the outside, the traffic was noisy through the city streets while the neighbor’s air conditioner continued its uneven dripping against the ledge.“How much are you offering?” she finally asked.A short silence followed after the question, the kind that sounded almost like someone smiling on the other end of the line.“Fifty thousand dollars,” Dana Reeves said. “It’s a fixed price. We record the interview, we manage the editorial framing, and you’ll have the right to review the primary quotations. It would go to broadcast within forty-eight hours of filming.”Fifty thousand dollars.Mira kept her eyes fixed on the grey brick wall beyond the window. Fifty thousand dollars. It was enough to cover months in this cramped apartment, a fragile buffer, but still a buffer. It wasn’t close to what she had once been used to, not even a shadow of it, but it was something real. Something that could start to shift the weight pressing in on her. It meant a li
