Samantha froze when she saw Oliver standing in the doorway. Her face went pale, her eyes wide with shock. She hadn’t expected him to come home this early—he was always out late. She quickly scrambled to cover herself, but her heart was pounding in her chest.
The man lying next to her was slow to react, more annoyed than anything else. He glanced at Oliver, then back at Samantha, and gave her an irritated look. He was obviously wealthy; he didn’t seem the least bit worried.
As he started getting dressed, he shot Oliver a dismissive glance, like he couldn’t care less about what was happening.
Samantha, on the other hand, was desperate to smooth things over. She tried to force a smile, but it came out as awkward and nervous. “Oliver, it’s not what you think...
Please, let me explain...” she stammered, but her words felt empty.
Oliver didn’t buy it. His fists clenched, and his jaw tightened as he glared at her. "Not what I think?" he repeated, his voice filled with anger. "What should I think, Samantha? "Is this okay?" His eyes were burning with frustration.
The man, now dressed, stood up and looked over at Oliver with a raised eyebrow, clearly not caring about what had just happened.
“Who’s this? Your husband?” he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm, as if Oliver didn’t even matter. He looked at Samantha like this was all a joke.
Oliver was furious, his body shaking with rage as he lunged towards the man again. He wanted to punch the arrogance right out of him. But before he could get close, Samantha rushed in, blocking him. She started crying, her face a mask of fake distress.
"Stop, Oliver! Please, just stop!" she wailed, tears streaming down her face. "You don’t understand; he’s important! More important than you’ll ever be!"
Oliver froze for a second, his chest tightening with hurt and anger.
"You’re really saying that?" he growled, his voice shaking with fury. "You have the nerve to tell me to leave after everything you’ve done to me? After you’ve been cheating on me?"
Samantha, wiping her tears away, looked up at him with a sneer. "Oh, come on," she snapped. "You were just something to pass the time. You’re not even real to me, Oliver. I married you in my head, not for real. I just needed a ‘husband’ to keep up appearances while I did what I wanted."
Her words hit Oliver like a slap in the face, leaving him speechless. He had been nothing more than a distraction to her all this time.
The man beside her, adjusting his expensive suit, smirked and turned to her with a shake of his head. "I can’t believe this," he said with a cold laugh. "You really went and married a nobody like him? A peasant? Wow."
Samantha quickly regained her composure, a fake smile spreading across her face. She glanced at Oliver, then back at the man beside her.
“Oh, him?” she said with a casual wave, trying to sound as innocent as possible. “He’s not my husband. We’re just... well, we’re just messing around. We’re not even really together. I’ve told him I’m not interested, but he just won’t get it.”
Oliver stood frozen in place, his heart dropping to his stomach. His eyes widened, and the words felt like they were choking him. She was lying so smoothly, so easily, like nothing had ever happened between them. It was as if their whole life together meant nothing to her.
The man beside her smirked, looking Oliver up and down with complete disdain. “So, he’s just some loser you’re playing with?” he asked, giving Oliver a mocking once-over. “Guess you deserve better than someone like him.”
Oliver’s fists clenched at his sides. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “We’re still married,” he said through gritted teeth. “No matter what you say, we’re still married.”
Samantha snorted, rolling her eyes. “Married?” She laughed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “That’s in your head, sweetie. You’re just some guy who can’t take a hint. I don’t need you. I never did.”
The man chuckled, clearly enjoying the scene. “She’s right. What kind of guy still believes in marriage when his wife is clearly done with him?” He looked Oliver up and down with a sneer. “You should’ve known your place.”
Oliver’s eyes burned with anger and pain, but he kept his voice steady. “I tried,” he said quietly. “I tried so hard to make this work. I even had a surprise for her today. A special treat. I wanted to make her happy.”
Samantha glanced at the small gift Oliver had brought, a look of disgust crossing her face. “This is your big surprise?” she asked, picking up the cheap gift with a laugh.
“A pathetic little thing like this? You’ve got to be kidding me.” She tossed it aside like it meant nothing to her, then picked up the cake. “And this cake... Seriously? You think I wanted this?”
She walked over to the man with a smirk. “Meanwhile,” she said, holding up the cake and turning back to Oliver, “he knows how to treat me. He got me real gifts. Expensive gifts. Thousands of dollars’ worth.”
She laughed cruelly and shoved a piece of cake into Oliver’s mouth, as if mocking his entire effort. “Here. Maybe you can finally enjoy something since you clearly don’t know how to treat a woman.”
Without another word, she turned and walked away, her voice filled with mockery as she called over her shoulder, “Go cry somewhere else, because I’m done with you.”
