Xie Ling’er slammed her hands together.

WHOOSH!

A heavy gush of wind tore from her hands, rippling through the valley.

Ladies struggled to hold their gowns in place. Trees around them swayed in the rhythm of the wind.

“That’s one heavy wind blast,” Lin Xue commented, squinting against the wind.

Mo Yueli stood still, her dao robe swaying in accordance with the wind. “Interesting.” She scoffed and adjusted the collar of her robe.

Shen Wuyin stood unwavering by the torrent, his expression unreadable.

After a few seconds, the wind settled.

Xie Ling’er grinned. “Princess, you asked for it.”

With a single flick of her wrist, two metallic crimson hand fans materialized in her grip with a sharp click.

Mo Yueli stepped forward. “Show me what you’ve got.” She raised her hand, and a sword appeared in her grip, purple gemstones embellishing the hilt.

A smug smirk tugged at the corners of their lips.

A thick film of qi swirled around the blade.

“Okay, let’s go,” Lin Xue shrieked with excitement.

Xie Ling’er lurched her fans towards Mo Yueli. They sliced through the air with terrifying speed, so much so that the villagers gasped in response, their eyes widening.

CLANG!

Mo Yueli moved faster. She swung her sword, smacking aside Xie’s hand fan.

“Is that it?” Mo Yueli shrugged.

Xie Ling’er took a fighting stance. “Of course not,” she responded smugly. Almost immediately, her hand fans returned to her grip with a sharp click.

“That was just a warm-up,” she added.

Rotating her hands in a circular motion, qi formed between them. She lowered her hands, and the revolving qi settled around the hand fans.

She shot her hands forward, and metal spikes tore from the tips of the fans, heading in Mo Yueli’s direction.

Tsk!

Mo Yueli clicked her teeth.

Without a fuss, she slammed the first spike aside with her sword. And the second. Third. Fourth. Fifth. Sixth. The more she countered the spikes, the more spikes shot from Xie’s hand fans.

“Can the princess withstand such an amount of strikes continuously?” Lin Xue gasped, his gaze locked on Mo Yueli.

Channeling more qi into her sword, Mo Yueli propelled forward, the clashing sounds of metal piercing through the air.

Shen Wuyin watched Mo Yueli closely. His eyes locked on every movement she made.

“Her sword has the ability to reverse the spikes back to Xie Ling’er,” he muttered barely above a whisper. “If only she would channel a bit more qi into her sword. This fight would have been over already.”

The purple glow of Mo Yueli’s sword reflected faintly in Luo Yuyan’s eyes.

Despite Mo Yueli’s movement, the number of incoming spikes increased. A sheepish grin curved on Xie Ling’er’s lips.

“Oh, Princess.” Her eyes lit up. “You are already surrounded by spikes. Just surrender already.”

Mo Yueli barely had time to respond. Her grip tightened around the hilt of her sword.

“Stupid girl,” she cursed under her breath, smashing aside the spikes swiftly. Her breathing grew uneven, her eyes darkening with every counter.

Still, the number of incoming spikes increased. Xie Ling’er stood still, channeling more qi into her hand fan.

“I haven’t even unleashed my true technique yet,” Xie Ling’er said smugly.

Lin Xue’s lips parted. He shifted his gaze from Mo Yueli to Xie Ling’er briefly.

The villagers watched closely. Some prayed and cheered for Mo Yueli, while some cheered for Xie Ling’er.

“Mo Yueli isn’t strong. She just happens to be privileged.”

“She is already wearing out.”

The words of the villagers rang in Mo Yueli’s ears.

“Father finally let me participate. I can’t fail now.” Her expression hardened. “I must scale through till the end and take what rightfully belongs to me, the Baiyun Spirit Blade Sword.”

Just then, she channeled more qi into her sword and wrapped qi around herself. With a single stomp of her feet, the incoming strikes melted into the wind.

Gasps filled the air.

The grin on Xie Ling’er’s face vanished. Her lips parted in disbelief.

“How did she…”

SLASH!

Before she could process a thought, Mo Yueli drove a lethal slash at her.

Just as the slash was about to reach Xie Ling’er, Shen Wuyin appeared in front of her. A green barrier circled around them, blocking Mo’s strike.

Mo Yueli stepped forward, her eyes blazing. “How dare you interfere?” She snapped.

Xie Ling’er trembled in fear. She looked at the tall young man standing before her, warmth fluttering in her heart.

Slowly, the barrier around them dissolved.

Shen Wuyin stepped forward. “That strike would have killed her.”

Mo Yueli stepped forward, qi swirling around her. “You had no right to interfere, or is she your little mistress?” she said through clenched teeth.

Just then, Lin Xue climbed up the stage, his face twisted in horror.

“Your Majesty.” He bowed his head slightly before Mo Yueli. “Using lethal strikes is forbidden.”

Mo Yueli turned around, her back facing Lin Xue. Without a word, she got off the stage.

A small scoff escaped Shen Wuyin. “So much for a princess.”

He turned to Xie Ling’er. “All good?”

The moment those words left his lips, Xie Ling’er’s cheek burned red. She lowered her gaze to the ground and nodded.

“Oh my, he is so handsome,” she thought, biting her lower lip.

They made their way off the stage, leaving Lin Xue.

“Please, contestants, no lethal strikes at all. This meet is a challenge, not a murder ground,” Lin Xue announced.

Mo Yueli went back to her chamber, her chest rising and falling rapidly, her eyes burning with rage.

She slammed the door shut behind her.

“He didn’t interfere when she kept shooting those stupid spikes and dared to interfere when I struck?” She smacked the ceramic vase off the small cupboard beside her. The sound of shattering ceramic tore through the room.

The maids outside jerked at the sound, but none dared to come in.

Back at the valley, another pair of contestants took the stage.

Xie Ling’er stood beside Shen Wuyin, her cheeks red.

“Why did he save me?” she thought, batting her eyelids.

Lin Xue reported to Luo Yuyan. “Sect Master, the princess, Mo Yueli, has retired to her chambers.”

“She hasn’t retired,” he said. “She’ll be back.”

Why wasn’t I informed about it?” Lin Xue lowered himself beside Luo Yuyan, his gaze locked on the ground as though it held the answer. “His mother is Xiao Lengyue, one of the merchants at the main market.” Luo Yuyan glared at him for a second, sending shivers down Lin Xue’s spine. “He is only here for a visit,” Lin Xue said quickly. “He asked to participate in the Meet, nothing more…” “To show off,” Luo Yuyan cut in sharply. Lin Xue swallowed hard. “Maybe.” On the platform, two guards carried Shang Li out
