Leo stood up. “What do we need? We’ll do it. Right now.”

It wasn’t a fancy ritual. Not like in the movies. It was a sad, makeshift thing in a dirty garage.

Iden told them what to get. Bella found a city map in Leo’s office. Leo brought over a shallow metal drip pan, the kind you put under a leaking engine. Iden filled it with water from the grimy sink in the corner. It looked gross.

“We need something of hers,” Iden said. “Something she wore close to her skin. The more personal, the better.”

The window was still open. Cold air came in. No one moved for a long time.Leo was the first to speak. "She cannot be far. I will find her."He closed his eyes. He reached out with his mind. Marcus had taught him how to do this. He searched for Sarah. He searched for her dark energy. He found it. It was faint. It was moving fast.He pushed deeper. He tried to enter her mind. He wanted to see what she was planning. He wanted to know where she was going.Pain came.It was sharp. It was hot. Something was fighting back. Sarah's mind was shielded. It had walls made of stolen power.Leo pushed harder. Sweat formed on his forehead. Then he heard laughter. It was Sarah's laughter. It was inside his head."You think you can get in, little Dragonlord? I have taken so many gifts. I am stronger than you. Stronger than all of you."She pushed back. Hard. Leo's eyes snapped open. He stumbled. Chloe caught him."What happened?" she asked."She is too strong." Leo shook his head. "I could not get i

  • She followed us out

The kids were safe. Three of them. They were scared but alive. Maria called a team to help them. The team would take their statements and find their families. Leo stood by the car. He watched the red door. His hands were still shaking. He had used his mind walk power. It was hard work.Sarah was not there. When they arrived, she was gone. They only found traces of dark energy. The energy was fading away."She knew we were coming," Chloe said. "She left before we got here."Bella nodded. "She felt you. In the dream. When you saw where she was. She knew."Leo looked at his hands. The mark on them tingled. "So she is always one step ahead.""For now," Iden said. His voice was grim. "But not forever."---They went back to the house. Maria arrived one hour later. Her face looked tired. She was worried."Three more missing," she said. "Since yesterday. All young. All of them had strange dreams. They had visions. They saw things they could not explain."Bella's face went pale. "She is hunti

  • She's taking more gifts tonight

The Phoenix Circle moved fast. No time to waste. They loaded everyone into two cars and drove out of the city. Past the suburbs. Past the farms. Into thick forest where roads turned to dirt and then to nothing. They stopped at a clearing. Surrounded by trees. No houses. No people. Just nature and silence.Elara got out first. Spread her arms. "This is where we train. Hidden. Safe. No one will find us here."Leo looked around. "This is it? Just trees?"Theron smiled. "Wait."He walked to the center of the clearing. Pulled something from his pocket. A small stone. He placed it on the ground. Stepped back. The air shimmered. The trees seemed to move. And suddenly, a building appeared. Not there one second. There the next. Stone walls. Wooden doors. Torches flickering outside.Leo's mouth dropped open. "What the...""Hidden magic," Marcus said. "The old kind. The kind that hides what needs hiding."They went inside. The building was bigger than it looked. A large hall. Training mats on th

The night air was cool on Leo's skin. He stood in the backyard, away from the house, away from the others. Just him and the dark and the burning in his hands. He looked at his palms. Normal. Just skin. But he could feel it. The fire underneath. Waiting. He closed his eyes. Thought about flames. Small ones. Just a little.Nothing happened. He tried harder. Focused. Pictured fire dancing on his fingers.Still nothing."Come on," he muttered. "You were there before. At the stove. In the chapel. Where are you now?"He opened his eyes. Stared at his hands. Frustration building.A tiny spark. Just one. On his fingertip. Then it died."Yes," he whispered. "That's it. Come on."He concentrated again. The spark came back. Grew a little. Flickered. Died.Leo wanted to scream. This was impossible. A human being couldn't do this. Couldn't make fire from nothing. Couldn't get inside people's heads. Couldn't be what they said he was.But the mark on his arm said otherwise. The dragon at the chapel

  • Last of your kind

Iden stood by the window, staring out at the street. His face was tight. Thinking. The others waited."We cannot just go after Sarah without knowing what we are doing," he said finally. "She is a dream walker now. Stronger than before. If we rush in, she will trap us. Kill us. Use us."Chloe nodded. "So what do you suggest?""The library. The old section. There are books there about dream walking. About dreamers and walkers. About how to fight them." He turned to face them. "We need knowledge before we need weapons."Bella agreed. "He's right. I've been practicing but I don't know everything. There's so much I haven't learned."Leo looked at his arm. At the covered mark. "I need to understand too. What I am. What this means."Maria checked her watch. "I have to get back to the station. Missing person cases aren't going to solve themselves. Call me if you find something."She left. The rest of them grabbed coats and headed out.****The library was cold. Old building. High ceilings. Du

  • Let's get them

The door closed behind them. The three strangers stood in the living room now. They didn't look around. Didn't take in the house or the photos on the walls. Their eyes stayed on Leo. Only on Leo.Chloe moved closer to him. Protective. Her hand found his. Squeezed."Okay," she said. Her voice was steady but everyone could hear the edge in it. "Someone better start explaining. Right now."The woman smiled. Gentle. Warm. Like she understood the fear and didn't blame anyone for it."Of course. I am Elara." She gestured at the two men beside her. "This is Marcus and Theron. We are the Phoenix Circle. We have existed for thousands of years. Watching. Waiting. Protecting the knowledge of the old world.""Waiting for what?" Bella asked. She stood close to Iden now. Ready."For him." Elara looked at Leo. "The Dragonlord."Leo shook his head. "I don't know what that means. I'm just a guy. I run a company. I make bad jokes. I'm nobody.""You are not just anything." Marcus spoke. His voice was de
