The stairs descended in a tight spiral, cut deep into black stone that seemed to swallow the light from Soren’s staff. Each step grew colder. The air turned thin and dry, as if the place had not known breath in a very long time.

Kael kept one hand on the cracked scabbard. The Shadow Blade no longer pulsed with wild hunger. Instead it remained unnervingly still—aware, focused, almost expectant. That quiet was worse.

Lira walked close behind him, one hand on Tomi’s shoulder, the other on Renn’s. Neither boy spoke. The weight of the place pressed down on all of them.

Soren’s voice echoed softly off the walls. “The first seal was not made with force alone. It required sacrifice. Willing blood. Willing will. Three seal-makers gave themselves to bind what they could not destroy.”

Kael’s grip tightened. “And the blade still survived.”

“It always survives,” Soren answered. “It only waits for the next hand strong enough—or broken enough—to carry it.”

The spiral ended.

They stepped into a circular chamber far larger than the hall above. The ceiling rose into darkness. At the center stood a raised dais of seamless black stone. Around it, three broken pillars leaned inward like the ribs of a long-dead beast. Faint silver arrays still glimmered across the floor, incomplete and flickering.

In the exact center of the dais rested an empty depression shaped exactly like the Shadow Blade.

The moment Kael crossed the threshold, the weapon in his scabbard flared.

Cold energy ripped up his arm. The cracked wood groaned. He dropped to one knee, jaw locked, forcing the power back down before it could fully tear free. Blood dripped from his nose onto the ancient stone.

Lira was beside him instantly. “Kael—”

He caught her wrist before she could touch him. “Don’t. Not while it’s like this.”

Soren moved to the edge of the dais, staff held ready. His face had gone pale. “The residual binding is still active… but it is starving. It senses the cracked seal you carry. It wants to finish what was started.”

Tomi’s voice was barely a whisper. “Mister Ren, the sword is glowing through the wood.”

Dark lines of energy leaked from the fractures in the scabbard, crawling across the floor toward the empty depression like living veins.

Kael forced himself to stand. Every muscle trembled with the effort of containment. “What happens if I place it there?”

Soren met his eyes. “Two possibilities. The old binding reinforces the seal you still have… buying time. Or the first seal recognizes the blade as its own and tries to reclaim it completely. If that happens, the backlash will be severe.”

“For me?”

“For everyone in this chamber.”

A deep tremor rolled through the stone. Dust drifted from the ceiling. Far above, something massive struck the sealed gate they had closed behind them. The sound was distant but unmistakable.

The true presence was still coming.

Lira looked from the dais to Kael. “We can’t stay here undecided. That thing will break through eventually.”

Kael stared at the empty depression. The Shadow Blade pulled toward it with steady, patient force. For the first time he felt something else beneath the hunger—an echo of the three who had bound it. Pain. Resolve. And a warning that had lasted centuries.

He made the choice.

“Stay at the edge of the chamber,” he told Lira and the boys. “No matter what happens, do not come closer until I speak.”

Lira hesitated, then nodded and drew the boys back.

Kael stepped onto the dais alone.

The moment his boot touched the central stone, the silver arrays across the floor blazed to life. The temperature dropped so sharply that breath turned to mist. The Shadow Blade nearly tore itself free of the scabbard.

Kael drew it fully.

Black steel cleared the broken wood and hung in the cold air, dark light coiling along its edge. The empty depression on the dais flared in answer.

Soren’s voice rang out. “Now, Kael!”

Kael drove the tip of the Shadow Blade down into the depression.

Light exploded.

Silver and black collided in a violent storm that forced everyone to shield their eyes. The arrays screamed with power. The three broken pillars trembled. For a moment it felt as if the entire chamber might collapse.

Then the light began to collapse inward—toward the blade.

Kael felt the old binding pour into the cracked seal. It was not gentle. It was raw, ancient, and heavy with the will of the three who had died here. The seal reinforced, layer by layer, even as the blade fought against it.

Pain lanced through Kael’s body. He held on.

When the light finally died, silence crashed down.

Kael remained on one knee, both hands locked around the hilt. The Shadow Blade still glowed faintly, but the wild leakage had stopped. The scabbard, though cracked, no longer bled darkness.

Soren lowered his staff slowly. “It held. The first seal’s remnant accepted the binding… for now.”

Kael exhaled, blood dripping from his chin. “How long?”

“Days. Perhaps less. The true presence is still awake. And the blade has tasted freedom too many times.”

Lira started forward—then froze.

On the far side of the chamber, where the darkness was deepest, a figure now stood.

Not stone. Not iron.

A tall silhouette wrapped in layered shadow, faceless, watching them with the same patient attention Kael had felt from the Wastes above.

Soren’s voice dropped to a near whisper.

“That is not a guardian.”

The figure took one step forward.

And the reinforced seal on the Shadow Blade began to crack again.

Gray light flared along its length. “Do not let it near the dais.”Kael forced himself to his feet. The reinforced seal still held, but fresh hairline cracks were already spreading across the wooden scabbard. The Shadow Blade trembled, caught between the old binding and the pull of the thing watching it.Lira kept both boys behind her at the chamber wall. Her voice was steady despite the fear underneath. “What is that?”Soren answered without taking his eyes off the figure. “A remnant. When the first seal was completed, not everything that answered the blade was locked away. Some pieces of its hunger escaped into the dark and learned to wear shape.”The figure took another step. Where its foot touched the stone, the silver arrays flickered and died.Kael raised the Shadow Blade. Dark light

Dark energy leaked through the fractures, drawn toward the glowing symbols on the stone.Soren’s voice was tight. “Place the blade against the center seal. Do not draw it fully. The broken edge of the bridge crumbled further under the weight of what approached.Lira pulled both boys against the wall beside the gate. “Whatever you’re going to do, do it now.”Kael drew the Shadow Blade just enough for the tip to clear the scabbard. Cold air rushed up from below, carrying the smell of damp stone and something older—like rust and long-dead incense. He reached back, took Tomi’s hand, and guided the boy through. Lira followed with Renn, and Soren came last, sealing the entrance behind them with a single tap of his staff. A deep, resonant roar rolled through the rock—closer now.Lira kept her voice low. “How long will that opening hold?”“Long enough,” Soren answered. “Or not.
