Chapter 14

The Black River

The ledge offered no second chance.

Registry lights closed in from three directions along the cliffs. Horn calls bounced off the stone, sharp and coordinated. In minutes the high ground would be theirs.

Kael looked once at Lira and the boys. “On my signal. Do not struggle against the current. Keep your heads above water and hold on to me.”

Tomi’s face was pale, but he nodded. Renn gripped his brother’s sleeve and said nothing. Lira met Kael’s eyes and gave a single, steady nod. Trust, given freely again.

Soren planted his staff. “I will slow the first wave. Do not wait for me.”

Kael did not argue. There was no time.

He stepped to the edge, the cracked scabbard humming against his hip. The Shadow Blade sensed the coming drop and the violence of the water below. It stirred, ready.

“Now.”

Kael grabbed Tomi with one arm and Renn with the other. Lira locked her hand into the back of his cloak. Together they jumped.

Cold air rushed past. The black river rose to meet them like a living thing.

They hit hard.

The water was freezing and fast, filled with hidden rocks. The current seized them immediately, dragging them downstream with brutal force. Kael kicked hard, keeping the boys’ heads above the surface even as the river tried to roll them under. Lira held on with fierce strength, coughing water but refusing to let go.

A submerged rock slammed into Kael’s side. Pain exploded through the earlier wounds. He gritted his teeth and forced his body to take the impact, shielding the children.

The Shadow Blade’s hum became a sharp, insistent vibration. The cracked seal leaked thin trails of dark energy into the water, visible even in the chaos. The river seemed to recoil from it in places, currents shifting around the cold power.

Behind them, shouts rose from the cliffs. Blue lights flared. Someone was already descending.

Kael steered them toward the center of the channel where the current ran deepest and fastest. Rocks less frequent. Survival more possible. He kept the boys braced against his chest, using every remaining reserve of strength to keep them from being torn away.

Lira’s voice reached him between gasps. “How far?”

“Until the canyon narrows,” he answered. “There should be eddies. Places to climb out.”

A larger rock loomed ahead, water breaking white against it. Kael twisted, taking the glancing blow across his shoulder so the others would not. The impact nearly tore the boys from his grip. Tomi cried out. Kael held harder.

The cracked scabbard struck stone and split further. A pulse of cold power escaped before Kael could contain it. The water around them churned violently for a moment, pushing them clear of a second cluster of rocks that would have crushed them.

The blade had acted on its own.

Kael felt the seal weaken again. He had no strength left to fight both the river and the weapon.

Soren’s gray light flared once high above the ravine—distant now—then vanished. Whether the old man had delayed the hunters or been overrun, Kael could not know.

The canyon walls began to close in. The current accelerated. Ahead, the river dropped over a series of low, violent falls.

“Hold your breath when I say,” Kael ordered.

They plunged over the first drop. Water closed over their heads. The world became roaring darkness and crushing pressure. Kael kicked upward with everything he had, breaking the surface with the boys still against him. Lira emerged a heartbeat later, gasping.

Two more drops followed in quick succession. Each one battered them. Each one forced Kael to spend more of the strength he no longer possessed.

Then the river widened.

The current slowed just enough. A narrow gravel bank appeared on the left side, half-hidden by an overhang of rock.

Kael drove them toward it with the last of his power.

They crawled out of the water onto the cold stones, coughing and shaking. Tomi and Renn collapsed against Lira. She pulled both boys close, checking them with trembling hands. All three were bruised and exhausted, but alive.

Kael knelt on the gravel, one hand braced against the ground, the other locked around the badly damaged scabbard. Water and blood dripped from him in equal measure. The Shadow Blade had gone quiet again, but the seal was failing faster now.

He looked upstream.

Blue lights were already moving along the upper cliffs. The Registry had not lost the trail.

Lira’s voice was rough. “We can’t stay here.”

“I know.”

Kael forced himself to stand. The canyon continued downstream, but a narrow side path climbed the rock wall nearby—steep, exposed, and the only route that did not lead back toward the hunters.

He turned toward it.

Then the Shadow Blade pulsed once—hard and deliberate.

Not in warning.

In recognition.

From the deeper water behind them, something large shifted against the current. A long, dark shape moved just beneath the surface, following the residual trail of power the blade had leaked into the river.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

They had escaped the cliffs.

But the river had not finished with them.

The air grew colder still, carrying a faint metallic taste that clung to the tongue.Kael led the way, every step a careful negotiation between speed and the pain radiating from his wounds. The cracked scabbard at his hip felt heavier than before. The Shadow Blade remained quiet, but the quiet no longer felt like sleep. It felt like listening.Soren followed close behind, staff light pushing back the dark only a few paces at a time. Lira kept the boys between them. Tomi’s hand stayed fisted in the edge of Kael’s cloak, a small, persistent point of warmth. No one spoke for a long time. The only sounds were their footsteps, the occasional rattle of loose stone, and the distant, rhythmic impacts still echoing from the sealed chamber behind them. The true presence had not broken through yet. It would.Lira finally broke the silence, voice low. “That thing in the chamb

The faceless figure stood at the edge of the light, layered in living shadow. It had no eyes, yet Kael felt its attention fixed on the blade in his hands like a physical weight.Soren’s staff rose. Gray light flared along its length. “Do not let it near the dais.”Kael forced himself to his feet. The reinforced seal still held, but fresh hairline cracks were already spreading across the wooden scabbard. The Shadow Blade trembled, caught between the old binding and the pull of the thing watching it.Lira kept both boys behind her at the chamber wall. Her voice was steady despite the fear underneath. “What is that?”Soren answered without taking his eyes off the figure. “A remnant. When the first seal was completed, not everything that answered the blade was locked away. Some pieces of its hunger escaped into the dark and learned to wear shape.”The figure took another step. Where its foot touched the stone, the silver arrays flickered and died.Kael raised the Shadow Blade. Dark light

The stairs descended in a tight spiral, cut deep into black stone that seemed to swallow the light from Soren’s staff. Each step grew colder. The air turned thin and dry, as if the place had not known breath in a very long time.Kael kept one hand on the cracked scabbard. The Shadow Blade no longer pulsed with wild hunger. Instead it remained unnervingly still—aware, focused, almost expectant. That quiet was worse.Lira walked close behind him, one hand on Tomi’s shoulder, the other on Renn’s. Neither boy spoke. The weight of the place pressed down on all of them.Soren’s voice echoed softly off the walls. “The first seal was not made with force alone. It required sacrifice. Willing blood. Willing will. Three seal-makers gave themselves to bind what they could not destroy.”Kael’s grip tightened. “And the blade still survived.”“It always survives,” Soren answered. “It only waits for the next hand strong enough—or broken enough—to carry it.”The spiral ended. They stepped into a circu

  • Chapter 10 The Gate That Answers

The sealed gate pulsed in time with the Shadow Blade.Kael felt the connection like a hook driven into his chest. The cracked scabbard grew so cold it burned. Dark energy leaked through the fractures, drawn toward the glowing symbols on the stone.Soren’s voice was tight. “Place the blade against the center seal. Do not draw it fully. Let it touch only.”Behind them the roar deepened. Rock exploded from the corridor entrance as something vast forced its way into the chamber. Red lights the size of shields flared in the dark. The broken edge of the bridge crumbled further under the weight of what approached.Lira pulled both boys against the wall beside the gate. “Whatever you’re going to do, do it now.”Kael drew the Shadow Blade just enough for the tip to clear the scabbard. The moment the black steel touched the central symbol, the entire gate answered.Light—cold and silver-gray—flared across every carving. The stone shuddered. Ancient mechanisms that had not moved in centuries gro

The cleft was narrower than it looked.Kael went first, forcing his shoulders through the crack in the rock. Cold air rushed up from below, carrying the smell of damp stone and something older—like rust and long-dead incense. He reached back, took Tomi’s hand, and guided the boy through. Lira followed with Renn, and Soren came last, sealing the entrance behind them with a single tap of his staff. The stone groaned and partially closed, blocking most of the fog.The path sloped steeply downward. They moved in near darkness. The only light came from a faint glow along the head of Soren’s staff. The walls were smooth in places, as if cut by something sharper than tools. Old blade marks scored the stone at irregular intervals.Behind and above them, the ground continued to shake. A deep, resonant roar rolled through the rock—closer now.Lira kept her voice low. “How long will that opening hold?”“Long enough,” Soren answered. “Or not. The presence is not bound by ordinary stone.”Kael fel
