Chapter 13

The Far Side of the Dark

The passage beyond the archway was narrow and uneven. Broken stone littered the floor. The air grew colder still, carrying a faint metallic taste that clung to the tongue.

Kael led the way, every step a careful negotiation between speed and the pain radiating from his wounds. The cracked scabbard at his hip felt heavier than before. The Shadow Blade remained quiet, but the quiet no longer felt like sleep. It felt like listening.

Soren followed close behind, staff light pushing back the dark only a few paces at a time. Lira kept the boys between them. Tomi’s hand stayed fisted in the edge of Kael’s cloak, a small, persistent point of warmth.

No one spoke for a long time.

The only sounds were their footsteps, the occasional rattle of loose stone, and the distant, rhythmic impacts still echoing from the sealed chamber behind them. The true presence had not broken through yet. It would.

Lira finally broke the silence, voice low. “That thing in the chamber… the remnant. It wasn’t trying to kill you first. It was trying to reach the blade.”

Kael nodded once. “It was part of it once. Separated when the first seal was made. It wanted to return.”

“And the blade wanted it back.”

“Yes.”

Soren’s voice drifted forward. “Every time the blade reclaims what was lost, the seal weakens faster. You drove the remnant away, but you also reminded the weapon of what it is missing. It will not forget.”

Kael already knew. He could feel the new fractures in the binding like cuts under the skin. The reinforcement they had fought for in the binding chamber was already eroding.

Tomi’s quiet question rose. “Mister Ren… if the sword gets fixed, will you still be you?”

The words landed harder than any blade.

Kael did not answer immediately. He kept his eyes on the dark path ahead. “I will try.”

It was the only promise he could still make.

The passage began to slope upward. The stone changed—less finished, more natural. Faint drafts of surface air reached them, carrying the smell of wet earth and distant rain. They were climbing toward the far side of the Wastes.

Soren slowed. “We are close to an old exit. It opens into the broken cliffs above the eastern ravine. From there the land slopes toward the outer provinces. The Registry’s main forces will still be concentrated on the western approaches. We may gain a day. Perhaps two.”

“And the presence?” Kael asked.

“It will follow the blade. Distance will only delay it.”

A soft tremor ran through the passage. Dust sifted down from the ceiling. Far behind, a much louder impact sounded—stone giving way.

The gate had begun to fail.

Lira’s face tightened. “We’re out of time.”

They increased their pace.

The passage ended in a partial collapse. A narrow gap remained near the top, just wide enough for a person to squeeze through. Beyond it, Kael could see pale daylight filtered through fog and rain.

He climbed first, ignoring the pull of his injuries, and scanned the outside.

They had emerged onto a high ledge overlooking a deep ravine. Jagged cliffs stretched away in both directions. Below, a river of black water cut through the stone. The fog was thinner here, but the sky remained the color of old iron.

No immediate hunters in sight.

Kael reached back and helped Tomi through, then Renn, then Lira. Soren came last.

For a moment they stood in the open air, breathing hard.

Then the Shadow Blade pulsed—hard.

Kael staggered. A wave of cold recognition flooded through him, not from the cracked seal this time, but from somewhere far below and behind them. The deeper awareness that had opened its eyes in the binding chamber had found a clearer path.

Soren’s expression darkened. “It knows where we are.”

Across the ravine, on the opposite cliff line, figures appeared in the fog. Not the massive presence. Human shapes. Multiple. Moving with purpose.

Blue sensor lights flared to life among them.

The Registry had not stayed only on the western side.

A cold wind swept up the ravine. With it came a sound Kael had hoped not to hear so soon—a long, rising horn call that was answered by two more from different directions.

They were surrounded on the far side as well.

Lira looked at him. “Options?”

Kael’s hand rested on the cracked scabbard. The blade remained still, waiting to see what he would choose.

He stared down into the black water of the ravine, then at the approaching lights, then at the three people who had followed him this far.

“There is one path they will not expect,” he said.

Soren followed his gaze and understood. “The river. The current is lethal. The rocks are worse.”

“I know.”

Kael turned to Lira and the boys. “Stay close to me. Do not let go.”

The horn calls grew closer.

Kael stepped to the edge of the ledge.

And the Shadow Blade, still sealed, began to hum.

The faceless figure stood at the edge of the light, layered in living shadow. It had no eyes, yet Kael felt its attention fixed on the blade in his hands like a physical weight.Soren’s staff rose. Gray light flared along its length. “Do not let it near the dais.”Kael forced himself to his feet. The reinforced seal still held, but fresh hairline cracks were already spreading across the wooden scabbard. The Shadow Blade trembled, caught between the old binding and the pull of the thing watching it.Lira kept both boys behind her at the chamber wall. Her voice was steady despite the fear underneath. “What is that?”Soren answered without taking his eyes off the figure. “A remnant. When the first seal was completed, not everything that answered the blade was locked away. Some pieces of its hunger escaped into the dark and learned to wear shape.”The figure took another step. Where its foot touched the stone, the silver arrays flickered and died.Kael raised the Shadow Blade. Dark light

Instead it remained unnervingly still—aware, focused, almost expectant. That quiet was worse.Lira walked close behind him, one hand on Tomi’s shoulder, the other on Renn’s. Neither boy spoke. The weight of the place pressed down on all of them.Soren’s voice echoed softly off the walls. “The first seal was not made with force alone. It required sacrifice. Willing blood. Willing will. Three seal-makers gave themselves to bind what they could not destroy.”Kael’s grip tightened. “And the blade still survived.”“It always survives,” Soren answered. “It only waits for the next hand strong enough—or broken enough—to carry it.”The spiral ended. They stepped into a circu

The sealed gate pulsed in time with the Shadow Blade.Kael felt the connection like a hook driven into his chest. The cracked scabbard grew so cold it burned. Dark energy leaked through the fractures, drawn toward the glowing symbols on the stone.Soren’s voice was tight. “Place the blade against the center seal. Do not draw it fully. Let it touch only.”Behind them the roar deepened. Rock exploded from the corridor entrance as something vast forced its way into the chamber. Red lights the size of shields flared in the dark. The broken edge of the bridge crumbled further under the weight of what approached.Lira pulled both boys against the wall beside the gate. “Whatever you’re going to do, do it now.”Kael drew the Shadow Blade just enough for the tip to clear the scabbard. The moment the black steel touched the central symbol, the entire gate answered.Light—cold and silver-gray—flared across every carving. The stone shuddered. The cleft was narrower than it looked.Kael went first, forcing his shoulders through the crack in the rock. Cold air rushed up from below, carrying the smell of damp stone and something older—like rust and long-dead incense. He reached back, took Tomi’s hand, and guided the boy through. Lira followed with Renn, and Soren came last, sealing the entrance behind them with a single tap of his staff. The stone groaned and partially closed, blocking most of the fog.The path sloped steeply downward. They moved in near darkness. The only light came from a faint glow along the head of Soren’s staff. The walls were smooth in places, as if cut by something sharper than tools. Old blade marks scored the stone at irregular intervals.Behind and above them, the ground continued to shake. A deep, resonant roar rolled through the rock—closer now.Lira kept her voice low. “How long will that opening hold?”“Long enough,” Soren answered. “Or not. The presence is not bound by ordinary stone.”Kael fel
