The rain falling over Neo-Aethelgard smelled of copper and ozone. High above the smog, neon monoliths cast jagged violet shadows across the rooftop of the Vance Sword Academy.

Kaelen Vance knelt on the wet concrete, a cold steel blade pressed flat against the back of his neck.

Blood dripped from his torn collar, splashing onto the polished sapphire crest of the Vance Clan carved into the floor. His breath came in ragged, wheezing hitches. Every rib felt fractured, but the pain in his chest was nothing compared to the suffocating silence of the spectators surrounding him.

"Look at him," Julian Vance sneered, his voice amplified by the spirit-microphones floating overhead. "The sole heir of the former Clan Leader, reduced to a trembling rat. Tell me, Kaelen... did you really think you could copy the secret Light-Blade Scroll without anyone noticing?"

Kaelen forced his head up, gasping through the metallic taste of his own blood. Standing at the center of the ring in a pristine white martial coat was Julian—his stepbrother, the golden genius of the family, and the darling of the city’s corporate media.

"You... placed it in my quarters yourself, Julian," Kaelen rasped, his eyes burning with helpless fury. "You locked my core at birth. I don't even have enough spirit energy to light a match, let alone execute a Light-Blade technique. How could I copy a high-tier scroll?"

A wave of cruel laughter rippled through the gathered disciples.

"Silence, trash!" Elder Vance stepped forward, his dark blue robes billowing in the damp wind. His voice hit like a sledgehammer, backed by the suffocating pressure of a Gold-Tier Swordmaster. "The evidence was found under your mattress, signed with your blood signature. You are a disgrace to the Vance bloodline—a coreless parasite leeching off our resources!"

Kaelen gripped the wet concrete, his fingernails cracking against the stone.

It was a setup. It had always been a setup. Ever since Kaelen’s father vanished into the Abyssal Rift three years ago, Julian and his mother had systematically stripped Kaelen of his rights, his mother’s legacy, and his dignity. Today was simply the final cleanup.

"By order of the Grand Council," Elder Vance announced, his voice echoing across the courtyard, "Kaelen Vance is hereby stripped of his surname, branded a corporate traitor, and condemned to the Abyssal Trench."

Gasps erupted from the junior disciples.

The Abyssal Trench was the toxic, dark rift cutting directly beneath the foundations of Neo-Aethelgard. Monsters, dark spirit beasts, and industrial runoff filled its depths. To be thrown over the ledge was a guaranteed death sentence—especially for someone without a protective Qi shield.

"Wait," Julian said smoothly, stepping closer with a predatory smile. He drew his prized blade, Sun-Shatterer. The edge glowed with a blinding, holy light that made Kaelen’s skin blister just from the radiant heat. "As his brother, let me deliver the punishment personally. It is only fitting."

Julian leaned down, his voice dropping to a low whisper meant only for Kaelen’s ears.

"Your father’s core was delicious, Kaelen," Julian whispered, his eyes gleaming with sadistic amusement. "And once you're gone, your mother's personal sword will adorn my trophy wall."

Kaelen’s vision went crimson. "You bastard—!"

Thwack!

Before Kaelen could surge forward, Julian drove the pommel of Sun-Shatterer directly into Kaelen's sternum. The impact shattered Kaelen’s breastbone. A agonized scream tore from his throat as he was lifted off his knees and hurled backward over the rooftop edge.

Wind roared in Kaelen’s ears as he plummeted into the dark, rain-soaked abyss. The gleaming neon lights of the Vance Academy shrank into tiny dots above him.

I'm going to die, Kaelen thought, air tearing through his ruptured lungs as the black fog of the trench swallowed him whole. I couldn't protect anything. I couldn't avenge anyone.

He crashed through the canopy of toxic metal scaffolding, bone after bone snapping as he ricocheted off the iron beams before slamming hard onto a altar of jagged obsidian deep within the trench floor.

Darkness pressed in on his fading consciousness. Blood poured from his chest, pooling over a strange, pitch-black iron box buried beneath the stone where he lay.

His blood seeped into the rusty metal surface.

Then, the world went dead silent. The sound of the falling rain vanished.

In the center of Kaelen's dark vision, a razor-thin line of purple light sliced through the pitch-black void.

[CRITICAL DAMAGE DETECTED.]

[HOST SPIRIT CORE STATUS: DESTROYED / UNSEALED BY FATAL Qi IMPACT.]

[ANCIENT BLOODLINE SOVEREIGNTY MATCHED: 100%.]

A violent, ice-cold surge of energy exploded from the iron box beneath him, shooting directly into Kaelen’s shattered chest. His back arched off the stone as black runes flared to life across his skin, knitting his crushed bones back together with terrifying speed.

[THE ABYSSAL SOVEREIGN'S GRIMOIRE HAS AWAKENED.]

[HOST HAS ACQUIRED: THE VOID-SEALING BLADE SYSTEM.]

[REVENGE PROTOCOL: ENGAGED.]

Kaelen’s eyes snapped open. The dull brown of his irises was gone—replaced by a chilling, glowing violet.

He sat up slowly, his fingers wrapping around the hilt of a pitch-black, double-edged sword that had materialized from the shadows beside him.

Julian thought he had thrown away trash.

He had just released a god.
