The entire floor shook. Another loud explosion rocked the foundation, blowing out the emergency lights and plunging the isolation corridor into pitch blackness.

Through the thick glass of my cell, I watched the digital lock spark and die. The heavy door clicked open with a soft hiss. The power outage had disabled the security grid completely.

I did not wait. I pushed the glass door open and stepped out into the smoke-filled hallway. The air was thick with the sharp smell of burnt wire and dust. Alarms blared overhead, mixing with the sound of gunfire echoing from the upper levels.

Across the hall, Evelyn’s cell door slid open. She stumbled out into the corridor, coughing slightly from the heavy smoke, her eyes sharp and focused. She looked around the empty hall, spotting me instantly.

"The power grid is down," Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the noise of the alarms. "Someone just hit the main sub-station from the outside."

"It is not an outside attack," I said, a cold realization hitting my chest. "Marcus. He must have turned on Vance when he saw the council was falling apart."

"Or he wants the core for himself," Evelyn replied, drawing a pistol she had managed to take from a fallen guard near the stairs. "Either way, we need to move. If Vance reaches the extraction lab before we do, Elena is dead."

We did not waste another second. We broke into a full sprint, racing down the long concrete corridor toward the lower sub-level where the extraction lab was located. Every door we passed stood wide open, the automated security systems completely offline. Other prisoners had already escaped their cells, creating total chaos throughout the facility.

We rounded a sharp corner and skidded to a stop.

The heavy steel doors of the main extraction lab were blown wide open. Smoke billowed out from inside the room, lit by flashing red emergency lights. Bullet casings littered the floor, and three council guards lay motionless near the entrance.

We rushed inside, weapons drawn.

The lab was wrecked. The central glass chamber in the middle of the room was shattered into a thousand pieces. Heavy cables hung from the ceiling, sparking with loose electricity.

Elena sat in the center of the ruined platform. Her knees were pulled up to her chest, and her arms were wrapped tightly around her legs. The heavy metal collar had been blown off her neck, leaving a raw, red mark along her skin. A bright, steady violet light pulsed around her hands, casting long shadows across the broken lab equipment.

"Elena!" I shouted, dropping to my knees beside her.

She raised her head. Her eyes burned with a fierce, blinding violet light. The gentle girl who had walked with me through the subway tunnels was gone. The core power had fully awakened inside her, transforming her into something terrifying and untamed.

"They tried to take it out," Elena said. Her voice did not sound like her own anymore. It echoed in the small room, carrying a strange, heavy weight that made the air vibrate. "They tried to cut it out of my chest."

"You are safe now," I told her, reaching out slowly to touch her shoulder. "We are getting out of here."

Before my hand could reach her, a loud groan came from the far corner of the room.

We both turned. Director Vance crawled out from underneath a heavy fallen metal console. Her pristine white uniform was torn and stained with blood. Her face was pale, and her left arm hung uselessly at her side, broken from the blast.

Vance coughed, spitting a streak of blood onto the concrete floor. She looked up at Elena, her eyes wide with a mix of terror and desperate greed.

"You... you cannot control that power," Vance gasped, pressing her back against the wall as she tried to crawl away. "The rift... without the core... the city will burn."

Elena stood up slowly. The violet light around her grew brighter, filling the entire room with a blinding glow. She did not look like a victim anymore. She looked like a judge ready to pass down a final sentence.

"Let it burn," Elena said coldly.

She raised her hand, and a wave of raw energy surged across the floor toward Vance.

Before the blast could hit her, a dark figure dropped down from the ceiling rafters, landing squarely between Elena and Vance.

The smoke cleared, revealing Marcus. He held a heavy pulse rifle in one hand and a small silver hard drive in the other. He looked at Elena, then at Vance, a wide, confident grin spreading across his face.

"I would not do that, little girl," Marcus said, pointing the muzzle of his rifle straight at my chest. "If she dies before I d******d the rest of the research data, the entire facility self-destructs. And trust me, you do not want to be standing here when that timer hits zero."

The barrel of Marcus's gun pointed right at my chest, unmoving and steady. The red LED light on the weapon blinked in the smoky air, counting down seconds we did not have."Drop your weapons and step back," Marcus said, his voice hard and empty of any warmth we once shared. "The facility is set to blow in three minutes. If you want to walk out of here alive, you will do exactly as I say."I looked past Marcus at Director Vance. She was still slumped against the wall, holding her broken arm, watching the standoff with cold calculation in her eyes. Even now, beaten and cornered, she looked like she was planning our execution."You think you can take the core and run?" I asked, keeping my voice low and steady to hide the anger building inside my chest. "The council will hunt you down before you even reach the upper lev

The transport van stopped with a harsh jerk that threw me against the metal wall. The back doors flew open immediately, and two guards grabbed my arms, hauling me out into a freezing underground corridor.Bright white lights burned down from the concrete ceiling, making my eyes sting. The air tasted stale and chemical, thick with the smell of ozone and fear. We were deep beneath the city now, inside the primary holding facility of the council. This was the place where people went in and never came out."Move," the guard on my left said, shoving me hard forward. They dragged me down a long row of heavy steel cells. Through the small glass windows on each door, I saw other prisoners sitting in silence, staring blankly at the floor. These were the ones who had fought the system and lost.

Marcus held the gun steady, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. The metal barrel caught the yellow streetlamp light, shining with a clean, deadly gleam."Drop your weapons," Marcus said. His voice was calm, almost bored, like a man telling someone to move out of the way on a crowded sidewalk. My feet froze to the pavement. Three years ago, Marcus was the one who handed me the files in the lab. He was the one who smiled, patted my shoulder, and told me that our work would change the city for the better. He was the one who slipped me the false security pass on the night the alarms went off. Or so I thought."You set us up," I said. The words came out flat, stripped of all surprise.Marcus let out a short laugh and shook his head. "I did not set you up, Ethan. I mana
