The barrel of Marcus's gun pointed right at my chest, unmoving and steady. The red LED light on the weapon blinked in the smoky air, counting down seconds we did not have.
"Drop your weapons and step back," Marcus said, his voice hard and empty of any warmth we once shared. "The facility is set to blow in three minutes. If you want to walk out of here alive, you will do exactly as I say."
I looked past Marcus at Director Vance. She was still slumped against the wall, holding her broken arm, watching the standoff with cold calculation in her eyes. Even now, beaten and cornered, she looked like she was planning our execution.
"You think you can take the core and run?" I asked, keeping my voice low and steady to hide the anger building inside my chest. "The council will hunt you down before you even reach the upper levels. You are just trading one prison for another."
Marcus smiled, but his eyes stayed cold. "The council is finished, Ethan. Director Vance and her little rules are done for. With this hard drive and the core energy, I am the one holding all the cards. People like me do not get hunted. We run the new world."
Before I could answer, Elena stepped forward.
The bright violet light around her hands did not fade. Instead, it flared brighter, casting a harsh glow across the ruined laboratory. She did not look like a frightened girl anymore. She looked at Marcus the way a predator looks at a trapped animal.
"You talk too much," Elena said. Her voice carried a strange, heavy ring that made the glass panels in the broken room vibrate.
Marcus tightened his finger on the trigger, his smile slipping for a fraction of a second. "Do not try it, girl. One twitch and I pull the trigger. The boy dies right here."
"Let him try," Evelyn said.
Before Marcus could pull the trigger, Evelyn dropped to the floor, sweeping her leg in a fast arc. Her boot caught Marcus squarely across the shin, throwing his aim off by just a few inches.
The rifle fired with a loud blast. The energy bolt missed my shoulder by a hair and slammed into the concrete wall behind me, showering us in white-hot sparks.
I did not wait for Marcus to recover. I threw myself forward, tackling him hard to the ground. The heavy hard drive flew out of his hand, skidding across the broken glass on the floor.
Marcus cursed, throwing a punch that caught me right in the jaw. Pain flared across my face, but I grabbed his collar and slammed his head back against the concrete floor. He went limp instantly, his eyes rolling back as he passed out.
I pushed myself up, breathing hard, wiping a streak of blood from my lip.
Across the room, Director Vance was already dragging herself toward the exit, using her good arm to crawl toward the open doorway. She knew the timer was ticking down, and she wanted to save her own skin.
"Stop her!" Evelyn shouted, pointing toward the crawling director.
Elena raised her hand. A beam of pure violet energy shot across the room, landing directly in front of Vance. The blast blew a deep crater into the concrete floor, blocking the exit and sending Vance scrambling backward in sheer terror.
"You cannot kill me," Vance gasped, pressing her back against the wall as she looked up at Elena. "If I die, the security codes lock down forever. You will be trapped underground until this entire sector collapses."
Elena walked toward her step by step. Her boots crunched softly on the broken glass. The violet light around her hands grew so bright it hurt to look at.
"I do not need your codes," Elena said softly.
She raised her hand higher, ready to unleash a final blast that would end Vance once and for all.
"Elena, wait!" I called out, stepping closer to her. "If you kill her now, we lose any chance of finding the exit codes for the outer gates. We need her alive to get out of here."
Elena stopped. She turned her head slowly, looking at me with those blazing violet eyes. For a second, I thought she might strike me too. The core energy had changed her, making her colder, faster, and much more dangerous than she had ever been.
"She tried to cut my heart out," Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You want me to let her walk?"
"No," I said, meeting her gaze without flinching. "We make her pay. But we do it on our terms."
Before Elena could answer, a loud, ear-splitting siren cut through the room.
Warning. Core containment failure in thirty seconds. Self-destruct sequence engaged.
The red emergency lights turned into a solid, blinding crimson glow. The walls around us began to shake violently as the foundation of the underground facility started to buckle under the pressure of the unstable rift above.
Vance let out a frantic laugh from the floor. "You fools! The reactor is blowing! We are all going down together!"
Evelyn rushed over to the computer console, her fingers flying across the emergency override port. "The main elevator is dead. The stairs are blocked by the cave-in."
She looked up at me, her face pale with dread.
"There is only one way out," Evelyn said, pointing toward a heavy steel hatch in the floor marked with a biohazard symbol. "The emergency drainage pipe leading straight into the city sewer."
I looked at Elena, then down at the hatch, and finally back at Marcus, who was just starting to groan and open his eyes.
The ground beneath us lurched hard, and the heavy ceiling panels began to cave in.

The Breaking Point
The entire floor shook. Another loud explosion rocked the foundation, blowing out the emergency lights and plunging the isolation corridor into pitch blackness.Through the thick glass of my cell, I watched the digital lock spark and die. The heavy door clicked open with a soft hiss. The power outage had disabled the security grid completely.I did not wait. I pushed the glass door open and stepped out into the smoke-filled hallway. The air was thick with the sharp smell of burnt wire and dust. Alarms blared overhead, mixing with the sound of gunfire echoing from the upper levels.Across the hall, Evelyn’s cell door slid open. She stumbled out into the corridor, coughing slightly from the heavy smoke, her eyes sharp and focused. She looked around the empty hall, spotting me instantly.
The Deep Cell
The transport van stopped with a harsh jerk that threw me against the metal wall. The back doors flew open immediately, and two guards grabbed my arms, hauling me out into a freezing underground corridor.Bright white lights burned down from the concrete ceiling, making my eyes sting. The air tasted stale and chemical, thick with the smell of ozone and fear. We were deep beneath the city now, inside the primary holding facility of the council. This was the place where people went in and never came out."Move," the guard on my left said, shoving me hard forward. They dragged me down a long row of heavy steel cells. Through the small glass windows on each door, I saw other prisoners sitting in silence, staring blankly at the floor. These were the ones who had fought the system and lost.
Trapped in the Web
Red laser dots danced across my chest. There was nowhere left to run.Director Vance stepped forward from the line of guards, her heels clicking hard against the pavement. She looked at us like a cat watching three mice cornered in a box. Her white uniform was spotless, completely untouched by the chaos of the broken city around us."Did you really think you could walk out of my city?" Vance asked, her voice calm and sharp.Evelyn dropped her empty gun on the ground. She raised her hands slowly, keeping her body planted directly in front of Elena. I clenched my fists until my knuckles turned white. My shadow energy bubbled beneath my skin, ready to burst out, but I knew it was useless. The guards had heavy suppression rifles pointed right at our heads. One wrong move and we would all be dead before we hit the ground
Broken Trust
Marcus held the gun steady, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. The metal barrel caught the yellow streetlamp light, shining with a clean, deadly gleam."Drop your weapons," Marcus said. His voice was calm, almost bored, like a man telling someone to move out of the way on a crowded sidewalk. My feet froze to the pavement. Three years ago, Marcus was the one who handed me the files in the lab. He was the one who smiled, patted my shoulder, and told me that our work would change the city for the better. He was the one who slipped me the false security pass on the night the alarms went off. Or so I thought."You set us up," I said. The words came out flat, stripped of all surprise.Marcus let out a short laugh and shook his head. "I did not set you up, Ethan. I mana
The Price of Freedom
Red lights flashed across the stone walls. Heavy boots hit the floor. The guard pointed his gun straight at my chest and told me not to move.My heart beat fast. I did not have time to be scared. Director Vance turned his back on us and walked toward the big power core in the middle of the room. He did not care if we lived or died. He thought we were just broken tools.I looked at Elena. Her small hand held onto my jacket. Her violet eyes shone with anger, but she did not shake. She was ready.Evelyn stood on my other side. She held her hand out, and yellow sparks jumped across her fingers."On my count," I said to them in a low voice. The guards took another step closer. Their guns were ready to fire.
