The cold stings my face before I even open my eyes. My head throbs with a sharp, pounding pain, like someone is hammering a nail directly into my skull.

I try to move my hands, but they are pinned tight behind my back. Thick metal cuffs bite into my wrists.

"Wake up, Project Seven," a voice says.

I blink hard, forcing my eyes open against the glare of bright overhead lights. The white walls of the new room spin for a second before they focus. I am sitting in a heavy metal chair bolted to the floor of a sleek, windowless office. The desk in front of me is made of dark glass, reflecting the harsh lighting.

The man in the expensive gray suit sits behind the desk. His silver mask covers the upper half of his face, hiding his eyes, but his mouth forms a cold, thin line. It is the same man who pressed the data drive against my neck in the tunnel.

I pull against the cuffs, but they do not budge. "Where am I?" I demand, my throat feeling dry and raspy. "Where is Elena?"

The man leans back in his leather chair and crosses his legs. He taps a finger against the glass desk.

"You are in the central administration tower of Neo-Eden," the man says smoothly. "And as for your little partner, you should probably ask her yourself."

The side door of the office slides open with a soft hiss.

Footsteps tap against the polished floor. I turn my head as far as the chair allows, and my breath catches in my throat.

Elena walks into the room.

She is not wearing her dirty combat suit anymore. She wears a clean, dark uniform with the silver badge of the Secret Council pinned neatly to her chest. Her long hair is combed back, and her face is completely blank. She does not look like a rebel fighting against the system. She looks like she belongs right here at the top.

I stare at her, feeling a hot wave of anger rise in my chest. "Elena? What is this? What are you doing?"

Elena stops beside the glass desk. She looks down at me, her eyes completely cold. There is no warmth in them, no hint of the alliance we just made in the lab.

"I am doing my job, Caleb," Elena says. Her voice is level and steady.

"Your job?" I repeat, my voice shaking. "You told me you hacked the system! You told me you wanted revenge against the Council! You said we were a team!"

"I told you what you needed to hear so you would break out of the simulation," Elena replies without a single trace of emotion. She turns to the man in the silver mask and nods respectfully. "The asset is secured, Director. Just like we planned."

The man in the gray suit smiles, folding his hands on the desk. "Excellent work, Agent Elena. You delivered the project right into our hands without a single flaw. The Council will be very pleased."

The words hit me like a physical blow.

Agent Elena.

She was never a rebel. She was never trying to save me or get revenge for her family. She was working for the Council the entire time. The fake fights, the clever escape plan, the trust she let me build—it was all just another layer of manipulation. A clever scheme to get me to break my own containment cell so they could capture me without damaging my internal coding.

"You lied to me," I say, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Every single word you said in that lab was a lie."

Elena looks down at me, her expression unchanging. "Emotions make people weak, Caleb. You needed to feel betrayed so your neural energy would spike high enough to blow the lab's main doors open. If I told you the truth, your brain activity would have stayed too flat for the override to work. I had to use you."

I pull against the metal cuffs again until my wrists burn. The realization that I was played by someone I trusted burns worse than any physical wound. I thought we were fighting back against the system together, but I was just a tool being moved across a chessboard by the very people who built the cage.

"You are a monster," I spit out.

Elena does not even flinch at the insult. She simply turns away, showing me she does not care what I think of her.

The man in the silver mask—the Director—stands up from his chair and walks around the desk. He stops right in front of me, looking down with a superior grin.

"Do not feel too bad, Project Seven," the Director says, adjusting his cuffs. "Agent Elena is our top operative for a reason. She understands how the system works. She knows that order in Neo-Eden can only be maintained when experimental threats like you are kept under strict control."

"I am not a project," I say, glaring up at him. "I am a human being."

" biología makes you human, perhaps," the Director says calmly. "Your mind, however, belongs to the Council. You hold the core data for the entire District 4 simulation grid. Without you, the network collapses. That is why you are going back into the machine."

The Director gestures toward the wall behind the desk.

A section of the dark glass slides open, revealing a small, medical chamber next door. Inside stands a vertical glass tube filled with a glowing green liquid. Thick cables and neural nodes hang from the top of the tube, waiting to be plugged back into a human skull.

"We are going to wipe your recent memories of the escape," the Director says, his voice turning icy. "Then we will put you back into a new simulation cycle. Only this time, the security protocols will be twice as strong. You will never wake up again."

Two heavy guards step out from the shadows of the room, grabbing the handles of my metal chair and hauling me backward toward the open medical chamber.

"No! Let me go!" I yell, kicking my legs out, but the guards are too strong.

Elena stands by the desk, watching the whole thing without saying a single word. She does not look away as the guards drag me closer to the green glass tube.

The heavy glass door of the chamber opens with a loud hiss, letting out a cloud of cold, sweet-smelling vapor. The guards push me toward the inside of the tube, forcing my head up toward the dangling neural cables.

I look back at Elena one last time.

She finally meets my eyes. For a split second, her jaw tightens, and something almost like guilt flickers across her face. Then, her mask of cold perfection snaps back into place, and she turns her back on me completely.

The guards shove me hard into the glass tube, locking the heavy door shut behind me.

The green liquid rises instantly, filling the chamber and covering my chest, my neck, and finally my face. I hold my breath, but my lungs burn for air.

Above me, the neural cables drop down, their metal tips glowing with a bright white light as they lower straight toward my forehead.

She looks like a hunter who has finally cornered her prey.Beside me, Elena stiffens. The cool confidence she always wears drops away for a single second, replaced by a flash of real anger."Sloan," Elena says, her voice low and sharp. "You always were a parasite who lived off other people's work.""I prefer to call myself a survivor," Sloan calls back, her voice echoing clearly through the station. She steps closer to the train window, keeping the gun steady. "While you spent three years playing double agent for the Council and using this boy as a tool to blow up the core, I built a real faction down here in the outer rings. And

The friction burns through my jacket, and my palm blisters instantly, but I hold on.
