Sloan gasps, her fingers clawing at the cold steel blade pinning her shoulder to the concrete wall. Blood drips down her dark jacket, pooling fast on the dusty floor.

I stare at Elena. My chest burns, and my mind races. Just seconds ago, Sloan told us every bounty hunter in the city knew we were on that balcony. Now Sloan is bleeding out, pinned by the very person who pulled us through the simulation.

"You planned this," I say, my voice dropping low as I take a step back.

Elena does not blink. She pulls the heavy pulse rifle tighter against her shoulder, keeping the barrel pointed down at the floor between us. Her face is completely blank, hiding every thought behind cold grey eyes.

"I always plan two steps ahead, Caleb," Elena replies quietly. "If Sloan did not set off that beacon, the Council would have locked down every exit in this sector before we reached the maintenance line. She gave us the crowd. I gave us the exit."

On the wall, Sloan coughs, spitting another drop of dark blood onto the concrete. She forces a bitter laugh, her eyes darting between the two of us.

"You think she cares about you, boy?" Sloan rasps, pressing her hand against her wounded shoulder to stem the flow of blood. "Elena is not some stray rebel. She worked the inner circuits for the Syndicate before the core went dark. She sold your entry data to the high council six months ago."

My blood turns to ice. I snap my head around to look at Elena, waiting for her to deny it, waiting for her to laugh and call Sloan a liar.

Elena keeps her gaze steady. She does not flinch.

"Is it true?" I ask, my voice shaking with a sudden, sharp pain in my chest.

"It does not matter what she says," Elena answers, her voice cold and even. "The past is dead. Right now, the Council has teams descending on this floor. If we stay here debating ghost stories, we both die in this room."

"Answer me!" I step closer, the white energy on my wrist sparking wild and bright against my will. "Did you sell my data?"

Before Elena can speak, the ceiling above us explodes inward.

A shower of concrete chunks and white-hot sparks rains down across the room. Heavy automated defense drones drop through the hole, their twin laser cannons locking onto our positions instantly. Red target locks flash across our chests.

"Move!" Elena shouts, dropping to the floor and rolling behind a row of smashed computer desks as plasma fire tears the air apart.

I throw my hands up, sending a massive wall of white energy crashing into the nearest drone. The machine shatters into a thousand burning pieces, but two more drop down from the ceiling to take its place. The entire office floor turns into a roaring storm of fire and flying metal.

We sprint toward the open elevator shaft, jumping over the edge just as a wall of plasma fire melts the concrete where we were standing a second before.

We grab the thick yellow utility rope and slide down into the dark abyss of the maintenance shaft. Wind screams past our ears as we drop fifty feet into the damp, cold tunnels below the city.

We land hard on the grated metal floor of Sublevel 9.

The air down here smells like old oil and damp rust. Dim emergency lights flicker along the curved brick walls, casting long, jumping shadows across the abandoned subway tracks. There are no sounds of enforcers here, only the steady drip of water somewhere in the dark and the low, heavy hum of power lines running deep beneath the earth.

I let go of the rope and back away from Elena, my hands still glowing with faint white sparks.

"We are safe from the drones down here," Elena says, catching her breath as she slings the pulse rifle over her shoulder. She looks at me, her expression softening just a fraction. "Caleb"

"Don't," I interrupt, holding up my hand. "Don't say anything until you tell me the truth. Did you work for the Syndicate?"

Elena stops. She looks down at the metal grating, her silence hitting me harder than any punch from Vesper or Sloan ever could.

"Yes," she says softly, her voice barely louder than the dripping water. "Before I met you in the tavern, I worked for them. I brought people into the system so the Council could harvest their neural data. That was my job."

My fists clench so hard my knuckles turn white. "And me? Was I just another target on your list?"

"No," Elena says, looking straight into my eyes for the first time. "You were different. The moment I saw the barcode on your arm, I knew the Council was lying about what you were. That is why I broke you out. That is why I am standing here now."

"How am I supposed to trust you?" I ask, my voice tight with anger and disbelief. "Every person in this city has lied to me. The tavern was a lie. The Council was a lie. Were you just using me to get back at the Syndicate?"

Elena takes a step toward me, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce heat.

"If I wanted you dead or locked up, Caleb, you would still be in a glass tube in the core," she says, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "I could have sold you to Sloan tonight. I could have left you on that roof. But I didn't."

She reaches out, her fingers brushing lightly against my glowing wrist. The white energy flickers and calms under her touch, the sudden heat fading away into a steady, quiet warmth.

Before I can answer, a low, metallic scraping sound echoes from the dark tunnel ahead of us.

We both freeze, spinning around to face the darkness.

The emergency lights along the subway track flicker twice and go completely dead, plunging us into total darkness.

From deep inside the tunnel, a pair of bright red optical sensors blink open, glowing like twin coals in the blackness. A heavy, mechanical footstep shakes the ground beneath our boots, followed by the terrifying sound of heavy gears grinding together.

"What is that?" Elena whispers, raising her pulse rifle and switching on the top-mounted tactical light.

The beam cuts through the dark, hitting a massive wall of black armor and exposed hydraulic cables moving toward us down the tracks. It is not an enforcer. It is something much bigger, built out of scrap metal and heavy military tank parts, with a massive plasma cannon mounted where its right arm should be.

And its optical sensors are locked directly onto us.
