Twin red lights cut through the black tunnel like daggers.

The heavy beast of scrap metal and tank plating takes another slow step forward, crushing the rusted railroad ties beneath its tracks with a deafening crunch. The air grows instantly thick with the smell of hot oil and ozone. A massive plasma cannon mounted on its right shoulder whirs to life, spinning up with a high-pitched whine that makes my teeth ache.

"Get down!" Elena shouts.

She shoves me hard to the side, throwing us both behind a thick concrete pillar just as a massive bolt of blue plasma tears through the space where we were standing a second before. The heat from the blast singes my jacket, and the force of the explosion shatters the brick wall behind us into a million tiny pieces.

Dust and smoke fill the air, making it hard to breathe.

"What is that thing?" I ask, coughing as I wipe the grit from my eyes.

"It is a cleanup unit," Elena replies, keeping her back pressed flat against the concrete pillar. She checks the charge on her pulse rifle with a quick, practiced click. "The Council uses them to wipe out experimental subjects who escape the core. They do not take prisoners, and they do not stop until the target is completely erased."

"Then we need to break it before it breaks us," I say.

I push myself up to my knees. The barcode on my wrist begins to pulse with bright white light. Even after everything that happened tonight, the power inside my veins feels endless, waiting for me to unleash it.

"Wait," Elena says, catching the sleeve of my jacket. Her grey eyes look sharp and focused in the dim emergency light. "Look at its left shoulder. There is a control box wired into its hydraulic lines. If you hit that exact spot with your energy, you can short-circuit its main core."

I look past the edge of the pillar. The massive iron machine lumbers forward, its heavy treads grinding against the metal tracks. Its red optical sensors scan the dark corners of the tunnel, searching for our heat signatures.

"How do you know so much about Council cleanup units?" I ask, turning my head to look at her.

"Because I helped design the tracking specs for them two years ago," Elena says without a single trace of hesitation in her voice.

The words hit me like a physical blow. For a second, the roar of the machine and the hum of the power lines fade away into total silence. I stare at her, my chest tightening with a sharp, burning frustration.

"You helped build the things that hunt us?" I ask, my voice hard.

"I told you the truth about my past," Elena fires back, her jaw tightening as she looks straight into my eyes. "I worked for the Syndicate, and I built tracking software for them before I realized what they were doing to people like you. Now, are we going to stand here and argue about my resume, or are you going to destroy that machine before it turns us into ash?"

Before I can answer, the heavy iron juggernaut rounds the concrete pillar, its massive plasma cannon shifting direction to point straight at our heads.

There is no time left to argue.

I leap out from behind the cover, raising my right hand high into the air. The white energy explodes from my skin, lighting up the dark subway tunnel like midday.

The machine fires. A blinding wall of blue plasma shoots straight toward me.

I throw all my weight forward, sliding across the slick metal tracks just as the plasma beam melts the concrete pillar we were hiding behind. Heat washes over my back, scorching my clothes. I scramble to my feet right in front of the massive machine before it can adjust its heavy turret.

"Caleb, now!" Elena shouts from the shadows.

She steps out and fires three rapid bolts from her pulse rifle, hitting the machine's primary optical sensor. The red lights flicker and blind the beast for a crucial second.

I do not waste the opening. I leap up, grabbing the heavy steel armor plating on the machine's left shoulder with both hands. I slam my palm directly against the exposed control box Elena pointed out.

The white energy from my wrist floods into the machine's internal circuits.

For a second, nothing happens. Then, a violent shockwave of blue sparks bursts from beneath the armor plates. The machine freezes mid-step. Its massive treads lock up, and a high-pitched screeching sound echoes through the tunnel as the internal engine overloads.

"Get back!" I yell, dropping off the machine and rolling across the ground toward Elena.

With a deafening roar, the iron juggernaut explodes from the inside out. A massive ball of fire and twisted metal tears the machine apart, sending heavy chunks of shrapnel flying in every direction. The force of the blast knocks us both flat against the ground, the wind driven completely from our lungs.

When the smoke finally clears, nothing is left of the cleanup unit except a smoking pile of scrap metal glowing a dull orange in the dark.

I push myself up, coughing as I wipe the soot from my face. My arms ache, and the energy on my wrist fades down to a soft, steady hum.

Elena stands up beside me, brushing the dust off her jacket. She looks down at the ruined machine, then turns her gaze back to me.

"See?" she says quietly. "We make a pretty good team."

"Don't push it," I mutter, though the anger in my chest has cooled down into a heavy, complicated exhaustion. "We are still stuck in a dark tunnel with no way out to the surface."

"Who said anything about the surface?" Elena asks, a faint smile touching the corner of her lips. She points her tactical light toward a rusted iron door set deep into the brick wall behind the ruined machine. A faded sign above the door reads SECTOR 4 MAINTENANCE ACCESS. "That leads to the old underground transit network. It takes us straight past the Council checkpoints and right into the heart of the lower slums."

I look at the heavy iron door, then back down the dark tracks behind us. There is nowhere else to go.

"Lead the way," I say.

Elena walks over to the door, pulls a small electronic decoding tool from her belt, and plugs it into the keypad. The small screen on the device flashes red, then turns a bright, steady green.

With a heavy metallic click, the door slowly swings open, revealing a dark, narrow corridor stretching downward into the earth.

Elena pulls the door wider and steps inside the threshold. But before I can follow her, the small decoding tool in her hand lets out a sharp, high-pitched warning beep.

The screen on the device changes from green to a flashing warning red.

Elena stops dead in her tracks, her eyes widening as she looks down at the display.

"What is it?" I ask, stepping closer.

Before Elena can answer, every emergency light in the tunnel dies. Complete, pitch-black darkness swallows us whole.

From deep inside the narrow corridor ahead, a low, mechanical voice echoes through the metal walls, speaking words that make my blood run cold:

“Welcome back, Project Seven. Authentication complete. Sector lockdown engaged.”
