The marble plaza of the Vermilion Sect became a pressure cooker [1.1], stifling and thick with the scent of impending slaughter. Five thousand spectators in the grand tiers leaned forward in a collective, suffocating silence, their eyes wide with a mixture of terror and morbid fascination. On the central arena ring, the broken body of Zhou Lifeng lay shivering in the mud, his grand inner disciple status reduced to a worthless, hollow shell.

Hovering high above on an elevated platform of solid cloud-matter, Sect Master Jiang Chen watched the unfolding chaos. He held his plain wooden staff across his knees, his serene, ancient gaze completely unreadable. He had deliberately set the board, throwing Lu Chen into the jaws of the Myriad Beast Abyss to see what would return. Now that a monster had crawled out of the dark, the aging ruler wanted to see exactly how sharp this weapon had become.

Below, the atmosphere broke into a frenzy of aristocratic panic.

"Form the Crimson Array!" Clan Chief Zhou roared, his face turning a deep, violent shade of purple. He stood atop his ornate silk carriage, his long robes whipping in the mountain wind as he pointed a trembling, ring-adorned finger at the center of the ring. "He is one man! A singular peasant rogue! Surround him, shred his flesh, and leave his skull for the mountain vultures!"

The response was instantaneous. Two hundred elite Inner Disciples—the pampered scions of the region's wealthiest martial clans—moved with fluid, clockwork precision. They fanned out across the plaza, their footsteps drumming a rhythmic, terrifying beat against the flagstones. With synchronized motions, they drew their master-crafted spiritual swords. Blue, purified Qi began to bleed from the ancestral steel, rising into the air like a thick, glowing mist.

With a collective shout that shook the dust from the pillars, they unleashed the Sun-Feather Cage. The blue energy knit together in the sky, forming a massive, translucent dome of crushing gravitational force that dropped directly over the plaza, pinning Lu Chen at the absolute center. The sheer weight of the array caused the stone pillars bordering the courtyard to spiderweb with deep cracks, yet the youth standing beneath it didn't even lift his chin.

Deep within Lu Chen’s gut, the emerald-crimson needle spun on a microscopic axis, humming with a high-pitched, metallic resonance that caused the air around him to visibly distort.

"You think your numbers can overwhelm a broken vessel," Lu Chen said, his voice flat and perfectly calm, carrying an icy undertone that cut through the roaring wind of the array. "But a vortex doesn't care how many dead leaves fall into the storm."

He took a single, heavy step forward. The marble beneath his bare heel instantly shattered into powder.

Thrum.

Instead of projecting his Qi outward to build a defensive shield, Lu Chen executed the forbidden reverse path of the Shattered Mirror Technique. He retracted his energy entirely into his core, creating an artificial vacuum around his body. The sudden collapse of air pressure caused a violent gust of wind to whistle through the square, dragging the loose dust and blood inward toward his feet.

The front row of twenty elite inner disciples saw the opening and lunged simultaneously. Their blades flashed in perfect unison as they executed the Sun-Feather Slash, aiming twenty lethal arcs of burning blue fire directly at his neck and chest.

Lu Chen didn't retreat. He didn't even chamber a defensive martial stance. He shot both bare hands forward, his fingers hooking like iron talons into the open air.

The Devouring Maw didn't just open—it detonated.

A violent, invisible gravitational pull erupted from his palms, twisting the space directly in front of him. The twenty incoming arcs of blue sword-Qi never reached his flesh; instead, they were forcefully bent, warped, and violently dragged straight into the center of his open hands. The charging disciples gasped in unison, their faces draining of color as they felt the spiritual energy within their own meridians violently pulled forward by an irresistible, predatory suction. Their boots lost traction on the slick marble, and their bodies flew toward Lu Chen like wooden puppets being yanked by their strings.

"Return to the mud," Lu Chen whispered.

He balled his blood-stained hands into heavy fists and slammed them downward, driving his knuckles directly into the center of the fractured plaza.

BOOM!

The stolen blue sword-Qi, combined with the razor-sharp, physical fragments of his own True Foundation energy, exploded outward in a flawless, radial ring of solid emerald needles. The jagged shockwave tore through the first three rows of the incoming formation with terrifying ease. Master-crafted steel swords shattered into glittering, useless dust. High-grade crimson silk robes were ripped to shreds. Thirty elite inner disciples were blown backward across the plaza, their internal energy pathways completely ground into a useless pulp upon contact with the jagged force. They crashed into the marble tiers, coughing up dark blood, their lifetimes of pampered cultivation vanished in a single breath.

The grand courtyard fell into a suffocating, terrified silence. The remaining inner disciples halted their advance, their legs trembling as they looked at the thirty groaning bodies littering the stone. The absolute authority of their wealth and noble birthright had just been casually crushed by a bare fist.

"Monster! Demonic beast!" Clan Chief Zhou shrieked, his aristocratic composure entirely disintegrating into raw, primal fear.

Realizing that his clan’s legacy was on the line, the chief drew his own heavy, golden broadsword—a weapon infused with the peak power of a Flesh Tempering master who had neared the boundaries of the divine. He leapt from his silk carriage, his golden aura flaring to its absolute limits as he brought the massive blade down in a desperate, two-handed vertical strike aimed directly at Lu Chen's skull.

Lu Chen didn't look at the incoming blade. Moving with the silent, terrifying speed he had perfected while hunting the predators of the third layer, he stepped directly inside the arc of the descending sword.

Before the clan chief could even register the movement, Lu Chen's left hand clapped directly onto the older man's throat, lifting him off his feet. Simultaneously, Lu Chen pressed his right index finger firmly against the center of the chief's golden breastplate.

"Your clan built its wealth on the bones of beggars," Lu Chen said, his pitch-black eyes reflecting the older man's absolute, wide-eyed terror. "Today, the foundation crumbles."

The emerald-crimson needle inside his belly gave a single, violent twitch. A line-thin beam of solidified, piercing solid Qi shot from his fingertip like a localized lightning bolt [1.1]. It bored clean through the chief's heavy gold armor, through his chest wall, and shattered his spine, exiting out his back in a silent, violent spray of crimson.

Clan Chief Zhou’s eyes went wide, the heavy gold broadsword clattering uselessly to the stones as his life force was violently vacuumed down into Lu Chen's open maw.

Lu Chen casually let the lifeless body slide off his hand and tumble into the mud. He stood entirely alone in the center of the ruined, blood-splattered courtyard. The remaining two hundred inner disciples backed away from him in a frantic, uncoordinated panic, their weapons lowered in absolute horror as they realized the beggar from the servant shacks was now the apex predator of the mountain.

Slowly, Lu Chen wiped a drop of dark blood from his cheek and turned his eyes toward the sky, looking directly at the Sect Master, who had finally stopped smiling.
