Chapter 1: Again

Sweat dripped on his face as he held onto this last hope.

The manager stared at Michael with a callous look.

“I’m very sorry, but I don’t think we need your service anymore,” the manager said.

“But I was told I passed the interview and I can start work today,” Micheal asked with a confused look.

“Mr. Micheal Bryce you are not qualified. The decision earlier was a misstep. And if you will excuse me I have a lot to do. Please leave ” the manager said and threw his application at him.

Michael just stared at this application and frowned.

But he also knew this was another hopeless case.

This wasn’t the first time and it still baffled him as to why he is always rejected without any reason when he goes out for a job.

“You are making a very big mistake,” Micheal conveyed.

“I think you are making a mistake. What if you have offended someone you shouldn't have.” The manager said with a smug smile.

Micheal just couldn't stand this annoying man any longer and left.

These words again.

Who has he offended to be treated in such a manner all the time?

Back at the mansion….

Amelia with an excited look stared at the pregnancy test in her shaking hand with happy tears.

“It's positive,” Amelia said with an excited sigh.

Just then she heard the door closing.

She hurriedly hid the test in her dress and stood up.

Micheal walked into the room and threw his application on the bed.

“Why are you back early? I thought you said you got a job this morning. It's nearly an hour and you are back already?” Amelia asked with a confused and worried look.

Micheal did not plan to hide anything from his wife and told her everything,

“I don’t know what transpired but I was told the message I got last night that got the job was a big mistake. And that I was never hired” Micheal said with a dejected look.

“Again?” Amelia asked with a stunned expression.

“Yeah,” Micheal said and collapsed on the bed.

Amelia held the test in her hand very tightly and sighed.

“Micheal, how about reconsidering asking my mom for a job? After all, she raised you. She can't turn her back on you now. ” Amelia suggested.

Michael stared at the only person who genuinely cared for him and smiled, “You think that's a good idea with everything that happened?”

This is his lovely wife, who despite his poor condition still loved him to the core.

“This is the only way. I’m afraid my mother will force me to divorce and marry that old rich and dreadful Mr. Scott if you still do not have a job,” Amelia said with urgency in her tone.

“I won't let that happen,” Micheal said with a serious expression.

“I know you won’t, that’s why I want you to ask Mother for a position at the company,” Amelia said.

Micheal stood up and held the hand of his beautiful wife and assured,

“Believe me. I won’t let that happen”

And before Amelia could bring out the pregnancy test in her dress, Micheal had already left.

“Guess this will have to wait,” Amelia said and placed the test on her dressing table.

***

Micheal stood outside the house and started back at the mansion with a concerned look.

He didn’t want to tell his dear wife about the response he got from his mother-in-law when he once tried to ask for a job in the company,

Is he going to tell this to Amelia,

It will break her.

Two weeks ago…

“Mother…” Micheal said but before he could finish with his statement, he was interrupted.

“Who is your mother?” Venice asked with an angry look, “I still haven't accepted you as my son-in-law. What makes you think I will be your mother”

“I’m sorry. I just thought that now that I'm married to Amelia, everything will change” Micheal said.

“You think you are some important member of the family now that you are married to my daughter?” Aaron Kincaid asked with an angry look.

“Maybe you have forgotten about how you got married to my precious daughter,” Vencie Kincaid said in anger.

“You tricked my daughter. Manipulated her into marrying a poor orphan like you” she continued.

“I never tricked or manipulated Amelia into marrying me. We both love each other unconditionally” Micheal said.

“Please spare me that,” Vencia said with a scoff,

“You think someone as poor as you is deserving of my daughter. And to think we will accept you as a family. We never thought of that all these years we adopted you, what makes you think we will do that now especially after you made Amelia marry you against her parents will”

Micheal unable to change the mind of this couple decided to go straight to the point as to why he was there in the first place.

Maybe he can change their opinions about him then.

“I know you have your reflections about me, but I would like you to give me a chance to work in your company to prove to you that I deserve your daughter. I promise…”

Before Micheal could finish with his statement he was interrupted by the angry laughter of Venice.

“You want to work in my company?” she asked as she stared at him with a disgusted look.

“You, an orphan we took pity on and adopted. Now that you have betrayed our trust by marrying my daughter despite all warnings, what makes you think I will want you to work in my company? It can never happen”

“But…”Micheal wanted to speak up again but the now angry Venice interested him before he could.

“There is no ‘but’. Now get the hell out of my house before I descend on you. You wouldn't like what would happen, if you don't leave this very minute”

Left with no other choice he left with a dejected look.

Present…

Micheal was left with no other choice than to try and look for other means to support his family,

Just then his phone rang.

With a glance, it was an unfamiliar number not saved on his old phone.

“I’m not in the mood for any prank calls,” he said and without any hesitation, he ignored it and placed the phone back in his pocket.
