Rowan walked into the company without slowing down, his presence alone enough to make the lobby quiet as staff straightened instinctively, their greetings low and respectful as he passed. The assistant followed closely behind, already briefing him in a steady tone.

“Sir, the launch schedule has been finalized. The new compound is set to go public in three days. Clinical clearance has been completed internally, and distribution channels are ready. All that remains is final authorization.”

Rowan nodded once, his pace unchanged.

The assistant continued, “There’s also the matter of advertisement and exclusive distribution rights. We’ve had multiple companies submit proposals, but the decision has been on hold.”

He paused briefly before adding,

“Previously… you indicated interest in assigning the rights to your wife’s company. Given their operational scope and market positioning, they would have been able to handle regional rollout, though not at full capacity.”

Rowan’s steps slowed slightly, then resumed.

He understood the logic. His ex-wife’s company operated within the pharmaceutical distribution sector. While they lacked the infrastructure to handle a national launch independently, an exclusive regional license would have given them rapid growth, secured capital inflow, and strong positioning in the industry. It was a calculated boost… one he had intended to give quietly, without drawing attention to himself.

But that was before.

Rowan’s lips curved faintly, not with warmth, but with clarity.

“Give it to any qualified company,” he said calmly. “Evaluate based on capacity, compliance, and long-term stability. No special consideration.”

The assistant nodded immediately. “Understood.”

They reached the office.

Rowan stepped in, and the assistant stopped at the door. “I’ll handle the arrangements.”

Rowan gave a slight nod, and the door closed behind him.

Silence settled in.

He walked to his desk and sat down, his posture relaxed but steady, his gaze drifting briefly across the room before settling. For the first time since leaving the house, there was nothing pressing in front of him.

Then his phone rang.

Rowan glanced at it casually and the moment he saw the number, his expression stilled.

His fingers paused slightly above the table.

For a brief second… something moved in his eyes.

It had been nearly fifteen years.

He looked at the screen without touching it, his face returning to calm, but his chest felt heavier than it should.

The phone kept ringing, but Rowan turned his head away slightly.

He didn’t answer and the call ended, and then it rang again.

He remained seated and unmoving.

The third time, it rang longer.

Rowan exhaled slowly, his gaze lowering slightly, but he still didn’t reach for it.

The fourth time... he groaned and picked it up.

There was no hesitation this time.

He answered the call, bringing the phone to his ear, but before he could say a word, an old voice came through, tired and heavy, like it had aged overnight.

“Young master…”

Rowan’s fingers tightened slightly.

There was a pause, and then the voice continued, quieter now.

“Your father… he passed away.”

The words landed without warning, but Rowan didn’t speak.

The voice on the other end steadied itself before adding, “There was an accident.”

Silence filled the room.

Rowan sat there, the phone still against his ear, his expression unchanged, but something deep inside him shifted quietly, like a door that had been closed for years had just been forced open again.

For a moment, everything around him seemed to lose sound. The office, the light, even the faint hum of the air system… all of it faded into the background as the voice on the phone became distant.

Fifteen years. That was how long it had been since he last heard anything related to that place.

Fifteen years ago, after his mother died, he was thrown out of that house like he meant nothing.

Not by his father’s own hands… but by the woman who replaced his mother, a woman who smiled sweetly in front of others and showed her true face when no one was watching. His father had stood there that day. Silent, and watching, not even stopping it.

Rowan never forgot that.

He had walked out with nothing. No money, backing, or name he could rely on.

If not for the couple who took him in later, gave him shelter without asking questions, he might not even be here today.

From there, he built everything himself. Step by step. Quietly and carefully until he stood where he was now, someone no one could ignore.

He never thought of going back, not even once, but now...

Rowan closed his eyes briefly, his grip on the phone tightening just a little before loosening again.

His father wasn’t a good man.

That truth never changed.

But his mother… she had always been different.

She had always told him one thing, even when things were difficult.

Do what is right, no matter who it concerns.

Rowan opened his eyes slowly, his expression returning to calm, but the cold feeling in his chest didn’t leave immediately. After a few seconds, he ended the call without saying anything more.

Silence filled the room again.

Then he picked up his phone and dialed another number, and the call connected almost instantly.

“Sir?” the assistant’s voice came.

Rowan didn’t waste time.

“I’ll be leaving for a few days,” he said calmly. “Handle the company.”

There was a brief pause on the other end, but no questions followed.

“Understood, sir,” the assistant replied immediately. “Everything will be managed.”

Rowan nodded slightly even though the other side couldn’t see him.

“Prepare the route,” he added.

“Yes, sir.”

The call ended, and Rowan sat there for a moment longer, his gaze steady and his mind already shifting.

He had no intention of returning before, now... he would go back, and not for the man who failed him but for the one person who never did.

Turning around, it turned out to be the young master Aiden they had been talking about, walking in with a calm confidence that leaned too far into arrogance, his eyes sweeping across the room before settling on Zora like he already owned the outcome of this meeting. He didn’t greet anyone or acknowledge the room. His gaze stayed on her.“So it’s true?” Aiden asked, his tone light but edged. “He’s your husband?”Zora didn’t hesitate.“Yes,” she said flatly. “And?”Aiden let out a small laugh, shaking his head like he found the situation amusing.“You had options,” he said. “You could have just agreed to marry me. At least that way, I would’ve stepped in properly, stabilized your company, and you wouldn’t be sitting here worrying about selling it off.”His eyes shifted briefly to Rowan, then back to her.“Instead, you chose… this.”The word hung in the air like an insult.“A burden with no background, no standing, and no value to your situation,” Aiden added casually. “Interesting choic

(The Next Day)Rowan and Zora arrived at her company early, the building already alive with staff moving in and out, the atmosphere carrying that quiet pressure of a place trying hard to stay afloat.Zora stepped out first, her heels hitting the ground with that same sharp confidence she always carried, while Rowan followed behind at an easy pace, his hands relaxed, expression calm as his eyes swept over the building once before settling. He let out a small breath and glanced at her. “Not bad,” he said lightly. “Not bad at all.”Zora scoffed immediately, not even sparing him a proper look.“Don’t get comfortable,” she replied coldly. “Just because my parents like you doesn’t mean anything. I don’t. Not even a little.”Rowan smiled faintly.“And don’t misunderstand your position,” she continued, her tone sharp. “Being my assistant doesn’t change that either. You’re here to work. That’s it.”Rowan gave a small nod, his expression easy, like he didn’t take any of it personally.“I unders

  • A House That Welcomes

His wife soon reached him again. The car stopped in front of him a little too sharply, and when the window rolled down, her expression was far from composed this time. Zora looked irritated, her brows slightly furrowed, lips pressed like she had been forced into something she didn’t want to do.“Get in,” she said.No explanation or greeting.Such a feisty wife.Rowan chuckled softly, his tone calm but lightly teasing. “That’s fast. Change of mind already?”Zora rolled her eyes like she didn’t have the patience for him. “Don’t overthink it. Just get in.”Rowan didn’t press further. He opened the door and got in smoothly, leaning back as she drove off without another word, her grip on the wheel a bit tighter than before. The silence in the car was not comfortable, but Rowan didn’t mind. He simply watched the road ahead, his expression calm, like he had already figured out the reason.Soon, the car slowed and entered a large compound, the gates opening automatically as they drove in. Soon, they walked out of the marriage bureau, the red booklet still fresh in hand, the ink barely dry on something that had already been defined before it even began.Zora stopped just outside, her heels clicking lightly against the tiled floor as she turned to face him again, her expression composed but distant, like she was addressing a formality she had no interest in.“Let me remind you again,” she said, her tone flat. “This marriage is only in name. Don’t expect anything from me.”Rowan looked at her, calm as always, a faint smile touching his lips.“I heard you the first time,” he replied. “You don’t have to worry about me disturbing you.”Zora studied him for a second, like she was trying to see if there was anything behind that calm response, but there was nothing obvious. No resistance or hidden intent. Just… acceptance. She didn’t press further.“Give me your number,” she said.Rowan did without hesitation. She saved it, didn’t say anything more, then turned, got into her ca
