Chapter 51 - The Patient Map
last update2025-08-23 12:19:12

The world fractured in two. Siya’s body stretched like a thread caught between realities, her arms pulled forward into the black seam while Marks clawed at her waist, dragging her back. The silence roared louder than sound itself, collapsing her thoughts into a single point of white heat.

“Asanda!” she cried, throat tearing.

From within the rift, her sister’s face flickered, grainy, layered, dissolving like ash in water. “Come deeper,” the voices whispered, stacked in her timbre, too many to belong to one person.

Marks snarled, pulling with everything he had. Siya’s palms burned so fiercely she thought her bones would ignite. Then, with a brutal snap, the seam slammed shut.

The corridor buckled. Lights burst overhead. Siya collapsed onto the cold concrete, her chest heaving, Marks half-sprawled beside her, both gasping in the acrid dark.

Her branded palms smoked.

“Christ, Siya,” Marks rasped, shoving himself upright. “You almost...” He cut himself off, shaking his head. “We need to mo

The lab stood at the edge of Observatory, tucked between derelict warehouses and a half-collapsed textile mill. From the outside, it looked abandoned, rusted fences, windows clouded with dust, and weeds breaking through cracks in the cement. Siya checked the address again. It was right. This was the place Dr. Halim had once run experiments, a private research wing funded quietly through Groote Schuur. She felt Marks tense beside her. He scanned the street, hand on his sidearm. “Doesn’t look like anyone’s worked here in twenty years.”“Rautenbach made sure people forgot about it,” Siya said. Her voice was low, her stomach knotted. “But Halim’s files pointed here. If anyone knew what Threnody was meant to be, it’s him.”They pushed through the gate. The air inside the lot smelled of mold and burnt wires. Siya’s boots crunched on broken glass as she approached the front door. It was heavy steel, not wood, and locked with an old biometric pad. Strangely, the screen flickered to life as sh

  • Chapter 52 - Not Just A Beacon

The silence in the old operating theatre felt heavier than any silence Siya had ever known. It pressed against her chest, thick, like the walls themselves were listening. She crouched over the strange etchings cut into the floor. The spiral lines were thin but deep, each groove filled with years of dust. Marks kept his flashlight steady, though his hands trembled.“This isn’t just decoration,” Siya whispered. “It’s deliberate.”Marks leaned closer, scanning the pattern. The spiral wasn’t perfect. It had veins running outward, lines that branched like roots. They stretched beyond the theatre, heading toward unseen points of the city. They followed one of the etched lines to its end. A jagged edge cut across the circle, pointing north-east. Siya’s stomach knotted.“Cape Town’s grid,” she muttered. “Power, water, everything. This place is a hub.”Marks pressed his palm against the carving. The moment he touched it, the air shifted. A hum rose up, not from the machines, not from the walls

  • Chapter 50 - The Silence Between

The silence folded around Siya like a living thing. It wasn’t absence, but density, every breath weighted, every heartbeat echoing as though the space itself was listening. Asanda stood in front of her, or something wearing her sister’s face. The eyes were black mirrors, polished and depthless, reflecting spirals of light that moved of their own accord.“Asanda…” Siya whispered, and the name felt like it was being peeled from her throat. Her sister tilted her head, like she was deciphering a note played off-key. Then the figure mouthed words, though no sound came. The silence was too total, too devouring. Siya took a step closer, her hand trembling at her side, resisting the urge to reach out.Behind Asanda, the void trembled. Patterns flared in the darkness, shapes folding and unfolding, like geometry trapped between dimensions, and within them were dozens of faces. They pressed against invisible panes, mouths stretched in silent screams, eyes rolling with terror.Siya’s chest constr

  • Chapter 49 - Let The Silence In

The fork trembled so violently against Siya’s chest that she thought her ribs would splinter under its vibration. Her entire body was buzzing, as though her veins carried not blood but tone. The spiral tightened around her, every wall folding inward, edges blurring into jagged geometry.“Let the silence in,” Asanda’s voice urged again, impossibly steady against the storm.Siya shook her head, choking on the pressure that filled the chamber. “Silence isn’t here, it’s nothing, it’s void.”“You’re wrong,” Asanda cut across her. “Silence isn’t the absence of sound. It’s the shape around it. The container. You carry it too, Siya. You always have.”The fork shrieked, its resonance climbing higher, like a bow grinding too hard against a violin string. Siya cried out and dropped to her knees. The chamber floor rippled like liquid glass. Her reflection appeared beneath her, staring up, eyes wide, lips moving a beat behind her own.Her reflection wasn’t mouthing her words, it whispered: You are

  • Chapter 48 - Tethered

The echo chamber pressed against Siya’s mind like water threatening to pull her under. Shadows swam inside the spiral, their edges blurring into sound, their movements synchronized to a rhythm that wasn’t her own heartbeat. For the first time since stepping into this fracture between worlds, she felt her grip slip. Her sister’s voice was thin, fractured, but always just out of reach. Then something sharp and metallic hummed against her chest. The tuning fork.Marks had shoved it into her hand before she stepped over the threshold, muttering that it might “hold her here.” It was an old resonance anchor, one of the forgotten tools from Project Threnody, a rough prototype, its metal prongs scarred with use, one arm bent slightly off alignment. Siya hadn’t believed it would matter, but now, in the spiral’s pull, it vibrated steadily, pulsing through her bones like a lifeline. She clutched it tightly, pressing the base against her sternum. The tone thrummed low, weaving through the echo’s
