The heavy iron doors of the Sump cellar groaned as Vax shoved them open, his hand lingering on the small of Akira’s back with a proprietary, firm pressure. Outside, the city was a sprawling, neon-drenched nightmare, the upper levels shimmering with the false promise of safety. Akira moved with a newfound fluid grace, his senses tuned to the subtle vibrations of the metal and stone beneath his boots. He felt powerful—a predator who had finally learned the shape of his own claws.

"Stay close," Vax murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rasp against the wind. "The patrol routes change in the upper sectors. If we get caught in the light of an Inquisitor emitter, we’re going to have to cut through a lot of red tape."

Akira glanced at him, a faint, sharp smirk playing on his lips. "I’m not scared of them anymore, Vax. You taught me how to set the trap. We’re the ones doing the hunting tonight."

Vax didn't respond immediately. His jaw tightened, a hard line against the jagged scar on his face. In his inner pocket, a small, encrypted data-pad pulsed with a faint, insistent blue light—a private channel he’d opened hours ago. The offer from the Inquisitors was there, written in plain, agonizing text: Hand over the Weaver. Receive a clean slate, passage to the High Spire, and enough credits to buy a kingdom.

It was the kind of life he had spent decades dreaming of—a life far away from the filth, the rot, and the constant, suffocating fear of a knife in the back. He looked at Akira, who was currently scanning the architecture, his eyes glowing with that beautiful, dangerous violet hue. The boy was a weapon, yes, but he was also... something else. Something warm that had begun to settle into the cold, empty spaces of Vax’s chest.

"You’re quiet," Akira noted, stopping on a rain-slicked catwalk that overlooked the industrial abyss of the mid-levels. He stepped into Vax’s space, his body pressing against the scavenger’s with a confident, rhythmic heat. He reached up, his fingers brushing the rough stubble of Vax’s chin, his touch electric. "Still thinking about the price on my head?"

Vax caught Akira’s wrist, his grip bordering on painful. He pulled him closer, the scent of ozone and something deeply, primal-masculine radiating from him. "Always thinking about the price, kid. It’s what keeps you alive in this hellhole."

Before Akira could pull away, the sky tore open. Searchlights from a hovering gunship swept down, painting the alleyway in blinding, clinical white. Below them, a dozen armored silhouettes swarmed the catwalk, their plasma emitters humming with lethal potential.

"Target sighted," a robotic voice echoed off the steel walls. "Inquisitor extraction team engaged."

"Go!" Vax barked, pushing Akira toward the main support beam.

The fight exploded instantly. Akira didn't run; he lunged, his hands wreathed in violet energy. He tore a slab of iron from the wall and hurled it like a javelin, crumpling the lead guard’s chest armor. He was a blur of violence, his movements perfectly calculated to intersect the enemies’ paths. Vax was at his side, his serrated blade flashing, carving through the opposition with efficient, brutal skill.

But in the heat of the fray, Vax saw his opening. A high-ranking Inquisitor, armor gleaming in gold, leveled a specialized containment rifle at Akira’s exposed back. It was a kill shot—or a capture shot—guaranteed to drop him. All Vax had to do was step aside. One second of hesitation, one tactical retreat, and he would be free of this nightmare. He would be safe.

Akira, lost in the exhilaration of the hunt, didn't see the muzzle flash. He was mid-leap, his fingers tearing into the throat of an assailant, his focus entirely on the destruction he was creating.

Do it, a voice screamed in Vax’s head. Walk away.

Vax’s heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic, rhythmic protest. He looked at the golden-clad Inquisitor, then at Akira—the boy who had looked at him with such absolute, trusting intensity only moments ago. The guilt hit him like a physical blow, a weight so heavy it threatened to buckle his knees.

"Down!" Vax roared.

Instead of stepping aside, Vax threw his own body into the line of fire. He tackled Akira, dragging him behind a massive hydraulic piston just as a bolt of searing, white-hot energy whistled through the space where Akira’s head had been a heartbeat before. The bolt caught Vax in the shoulder, the searing heat of the impact sending him spiraling into the dark.

"Vax!" Akira screamed, his voice shattering with sudden, sharp panic.

He didn't care about the guards anymore. He didn't care about the hunt. He spun around, his eyes burning with a blinding, terrifying violet rage. The air in the catwalk began to warp, the sound of metal screaming as Akira ripped the integrity from every bolt, every weld, and every structural support in the vicinity.

The entire platform groaned, then buckled.

Akira didn't look at the guards as they fell into the dark; he was already at Vax’s side, his hands glowing with a frantic, pulsing light. He dragged Vax’s unconscious form into the shadows, his chest heaving, his breath hitching in his throat.

"You idiot," Akira whispered, his hand hovering over Vax’s wounded shoulder, his fingers trembling with a mix of fury and desperate, aching love. "Why would you do that?"

He looked down at the man who had almost betrayed him, the man who was currently bleeding his life away in the dirt. The predatory hum in Akira’s veins was replaced by something softer, something agonizingly vulnerable. He knew Vax was hiding something—the flicker of the data-pad, the hesitation in his eyes—but as he pressed his palm to Vax’s chest, feeling the weak, thudding rhythm of his heart, Akira made his own choice.

He began to weave, not to fight, but to heal, pouring his own stolen vitality into the scavenger’s wounds, anchoring them together in the cold, unforgiving dark.

"I’m not done with you yet," Akira murmured, his voice a fierce, possessive promise. "You don't get to leave me in the dark alone."

When they finally broke apart, Akira’s pulse was a frantic, rhythmic drum against his ribs. He didn't look at the gray husks of the Reclaimers; he felt their absence in the atmosphere, a quiet vacancy in the weave that told him they were well and truly gone.Vax wiped a streak of blood from his lip, his eyes dark with a mixture of residual fear and a predatory pride that made Akira’s stomach tighten. "We can’t stay here," Vax muttered, his voice still ragged. "The moment those boys didn't check in, the Spire sensors would have flagged this sector. If we want to hit the core, we have to move now, while they’re still recalibrating."Akira nodded, his fingers lingering on Vax’s hip for a second longer than necessary, grounding himself in the warmth of the man’s body before turning toward the ventilation shaft that led upward. "Lead the way, then. I’m do

The metallic tang of ozone and scorched flesh clung to the air like a shroud. Akira knelt in the gloom, his fingers buried deep into the ragged edges of Vax’s tunic. His own life-force pulsed through his palms, a violet, liquid fire that seeped into the scavenger’s jagged wound. He watched as the skin knitted itself back together, knit by agonizing knit, but the cost was staggering. Akira felt his own internal reserves hollowing out, leaving him lightheaded and swaying."Wake up," Akira hissed, his voice cracking. He didn't know if he was pleading with Vax or with the cold, uncaring city. "You don't get to die on me after what you almost did."Vax’s eyelids fluttered, a raw, ragged gasp breaking the silence. He shifted, his body arching in pain as he looked up at Akira. His eyes, usually sharp and cynical, were hazy with shock. "You… you idiot," he rasped, his voice barely audible over the distant drone of the Inquisitor gunships. "You burned half your soul to stitch me up. Why?"Akir

The silence of the Sunken Sanctum felt heavy, like a shroud that had finally settled over Akira’s mind. He blinked, the violet glow in his eyes receding into a dull, charcoal ash. The world felt different—cleaner, but frighteningly hollow. He looked up at the man holding him, the stranger whose pulse beat in rhythm with the echoes of the chamber."I’m the one who’s going to keep you safe," the man whispered, his breath hot and ragged against Akira’s ear. "And since you don't remember who you were... you’re finally all mine to decide."Akira frowned, pulling back just enough to study the man’s face. He didn't know why he knew it, but the name stuck to him like a shadow.Vax let out a low, shaky laugh, his thumb tracing the line of Akira’s jaw with a possessive, electric friction. "Yeah. Vax. The air between Akira and Kaelith grew so thin it felt like shards of glass in his lungs. He was feigning total defeat, his body hanging limp in her iron-tight grip, but his mind was a storm of calculation. He felt the threads of her energy—golden, rigid, and arrogant—unfurling near his skin. She was so close he could taste the ozone of her power.Closer, he prayed, his fingers twitching in the dark.As she leaned in to deliver her final, chilling threat, the air didn’t just vibrate; it tore. Akira snapped his head forward, not to strike, but to jam a hidden, solidified spike of his own violet energy into the gap between her armor plates at her neck. It wasn't enough to kill her, but it was enough to shatter the localized pressure.Kaelith recoiled with a sharp hiss, her golden eyes flashing with genuine surprise. In that micro-second of disorientation, Akira twisted, slamming his shoulder into her chest and breaking the hold. He dove toward Vax, hooked his arm under the scavenger’s h
