"Kyaa! Somebody, help me!"

A woman's hysterical scream suddenly shattered the tranquility of the forest.

Jaka, who was making his way down the mountain, stopped dead in his tracks. The cold wind blowing gently through the trees seemed to freeze for a split second. He turned toward the sound, eyes narrowing as he tried to pinpoint its source amidst the rustling leaves and the flurry of startled birds taking flight.

There was no time to think.

Without hesitation, Jaka broke into a sprint.

  • 023 Overnight Growth

After finishing watering all the fruit trees, Jaka hurried back to the very first one.His steps were brisk, driven by a quiet hope that the fruits might have burst forth just like the suddenly ripe chili peppers. He pictured branches heavy with mangoes, guavas, or other fruits, hanging ripe and ready to be plucked, ready to be sold, ready to change their fate little by little. But as he reached the spot, he stopped in his tracks. The tree was undeniably far greener than before. Its leaves looked vibrant and fresh. The trunk stood sturdier, and new shoots had sprouted along several branches. But there was no fruit. Not a single one.Jaka stared at the barren branches for a long moment.A heavy wave of disappointment slowly settled in his chest."Just as I thought," he muttered. He let out a long breath, a bitter smile tugging at his lips."Unlike the chilies and the vegetables, fruit trees need a lot more nutrients to actually bear fruit."Dina, who had been standing quietly behind hi

  • 022 The Burden of Miracles

Besides the chili peppers, they were also harvesting vegetables.Spinach, mustard greens, and several other crops grew with unbelievable vitality. Their leaves were broad, their colors deep and vibrant, and their stems snapped with a crisp crunch. Susi shook her head on more than one occasion, still unable to wrap her mind around how drastically the field had transformed in such a short time.A portion of the harvest was sold off to the middlemen.Yet, even after a large chunk of it was carted away, the piles left in the field seemed endless. On a typical harvest day, the four of them were more than enough to clear everything in half a day. They would start early in the morning and head home by noon, exhausted but with the job finished.Today was different.Even as late afternoon rolled around, they were only halfway done. The sun began its descent in the west. A deep amber glow washed over the field, stretching their shadows across the dirt. Sweat soaked through the back of Jaka’s

  • 021 The Impossible Harvest

By the next morning, every last shred of Dina’s doubt had vanished. She stood frozen on the ridge of the field. Just yesterday, these crops had been withered and at death's door. Now, they were a lush, vibrant green, practically bursting with life and ready for harvest. Her lips parted in sheer disbelief. Her wide eyes darted from one row of crops to the next. The cool morning breeze tugged at the ends of her hair, carrying the rich, earthy scent of damp soil and fresh greenery."Brother..." she breathed."Believe me now?"Dina whipped her head around, her stunned expression instantly melting into a radiant, beaming smile."You're amazing!" she squealed, practically bouncing on the tips of her toes. "It’s like you’re a hero straight out of a storybook!"A sudden, unexpected warmth spread through Jaka’s chest. He tried to fight back a smile, but failed miserably. For the longest time, he had felt like nothing more than a failure, a guy who had lost his job and been forced to crawl back

  • 020 Bejo's Old Tale

Once Jaka left, the living room settled back into a quiet stillness.Susi turned her gaze to Bejo.“Do you really believe him?” she asked softly.Bejo didn’t answer right away. His eyes lingered on the kitchen doorway where Jaka had just disappeared.“His eyes weren't lying,” Bejo finally said. “And that field… there’s no way it could change overnight like that. Not unless something truly beyond our understanding was at work.”Susi lowered her head. “I’m scared.”“I am, too.”That blunt honesty left Susi speechless.Bejo leaned back slowly, his gaze drifting off into the distance. Deep within his mind, long-buried memories began to stir, rustling like dry leaves caught in a sudden breeze.Years ago, back when he was just a young man and his father was still alive, Bejo had encountered a mystical being by the river near their village. It hadn't been a mountain spirit like the one Jaka had met.Rather, it was a beautiful woman, the kind the village elders used to call a fairy. Her face

  • 019 The Secret of Mount Sumbing

Jaka began his story with the strange premonition that had driven him to climb Mount Sumbing. He recounted his encounter with the mysterious figure who claimed to be the spirit of the mountain. The longer he spoke, the heavier the silence in the living room became.Susi repeatedly covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes widening at the mention of the mountain's guardian. Bejo remained silent, though the occasional twitch of his clasped fingers resting on his knees betrayed his restless thoughts.Jaka also explained the technique the mountain spirit had bestowed upon him.He didn't dive too deep into the specifics, but he shared enough to make his parents understand that the sudden changes in their fields weren't the result of black magic or some dark pact. Everything stemmed from something older, far more mysterious, and perhaps more sacred than they could possibly comprehend. When he finally finished, nobody said a word. The yellow bulb overhead flickered softly. In the kitchen,

  • 018 Miracle in the Field

The crops in the field had turned green. And it wasn't just the dull, desperate green of thirsty plants finally getting a drink. This was a rich, vibrant green that defied all logic. Leaves glistened under the late afternoon sun, and stems that had been drooping only hours ago now stood tall, as if they had just woken from a deep slumber. Fat, ripe red chilies hung heavily from the branches, glowing like tiny lanterns amidst the lush canopy.Just moments ago, the field had looked like a terminal patient waiting for the end.Yellowing leaves. Limp stalks. Exhausted soil. Even the air had felt suffocatingly bleak, as if the entire plot of land was quietly surrendering to death. But now, everything had changed. The vegetables were thriving. The chilies were perfectly ripe. Crops that had been on the verge of withering away were suddenly ready for harvest, as if an invisible hand had forcibly fast-forwarded time.Jaka stood frozen in the middle of the field, staring at the impossible si
