“Get downstairs,” Kael said. “Stay inside the glass room and keep away from the far panel.”

Elena caught Maya's arm as the first shot broke the front window. Evelyn pulled the neighbor down behind a parked car, then raised her barrier toward the men across the street.

Kael moved between his family and the window. He held a small shield across the open aisle only long enough for Elena and Maya to pass, then released it before the strain could empty his core.

Kael arrived in the fifth realm beside an empty well. His mother's crystal dipped below its broken rim, drawing a white spark out of the dark. No guards waited here. He let the fragment enter his chest, kept his hand against the stone until it settled, and stepped into the next crossing.Black Sky Peak was waiting. The warning from the collection yard would reach whoever guarded the pieces still ahead of him.The sixth realm brought him to a shallow cave. Water dripped near the entrance, but the floor at the back was dry. Another fragment rested there, caught in a split stone. This one pulled harder than the others.Kael crouched as it rose toward him. The moment it touched his chest, pain spread beneath his ribs. He drew on his growing reserve, trying to push the returning power into place. The pain sharpened. His hand struck the floor, and the crystal flashed beside his face. His mother's recorded voice filled the cave. “If the joining hurts, stop pushing. Hold your magic still. The

  • Chapter 78 - The Pieces He Left Behind

Loose grit rolled beneath Kael’s boot. He stepped away from the broken edge of the terrace, where a drop opened into darkness between the mountains. The crystal moved with him, its white light catching on a fallen stone pillar. Behind it, a thin thread of light stretched into empty air. That was his connection to the school, where Maya and Mara were waiting.Kael touched the crystal with two fingers. The thread remained steady. He looked toward the ruined shelter at the back of the terrace. Three pillars still held part of its roof. Between them, a pale glow shone from a block of weathered stone. He felt the glow before he reached it. His small core stirred, but the pull went deeper than the place where he stored magic. He knew that power. He had once carried it without thinking, as familiar as the movement of his own hand.Kael stopped beside the block. “You brought me to the right place.”His mother’s crystal gave no answer. Its light spread across the stone, revealing a narrow brea

  • Chapter 77 - What His Mother Left Behind

Kael reached for his mother’s hand. His fingers passed through the light, and the wooden table remained solid beneath it.He tried again, more slowly, though he already knew what he would find.Kael looked into her face. “Can you hear me?”The image did not turn toward his voice. Her hands remained folded in front of her, and her eyes held the same position. She was looking at a place where he had not yet stood when she spoke these words. His mother’s recorded voice continued. “I have left this message for you alone. Anyone outside the crystal’s protection will be able to see you, but they will not hear what I tell you.”Kael lowered his hand. She was not here. The small movement of her mouth, the sound of her breathing between sentences, even the concern in her face had been kept inside the crystal long ago.Beyond the clear barrier, Mara was speaking to Maya. Kael could see their mouths move, but heard nothing. He lifted one hand to show that he was unhurt, then turned back before h

  • Chapter 76 - The Crystal That Knew Him

Maya opened the reply form on her phone, then passed it to Elena for the parent’s section. Across the kitchen table, Kael checked the dates against his workshop hours.Thomas leaned closer to read the travel details. “The institute is arranging the transport?”Elena found the answer beneath the invitation. “Yes. Mara will send the meeting time after they confirm the group.”Maya took the phone back when her mother finished. “Then I’m accepting.”She pressed the button before she could spend another evening worrying about the other competitors. Kael submitted his own reply a moment later.Thomas picked up the empty glasses. “Good. Now you can both stop staring at the invitations and get some sleep.”Maya kept her phone long enough to send Nina a message. Kael smiled as he helped clear the table. There would be time tomorrow to think about unfamiliar equipment and students with stronger cores. For tonight, they had somewhere to go and work they wanted to do.The next afternoon, Kael rep

  • Chapter 75 - A Name They Earned

Kael loosened his grip on the result sheet. The examiner’s question was reasonable. A student had performed a repair with unusual control, and the man wanted to know where he had learned it.“I learned the principles before I came to the institute,” Kael answered. “During preparation, I worked out how to use them on this kind of plate. I developed the repair for this examination.”The examiner glanced at the small diagram in Kael’s notes. “Through a previous teacher?”Kael kept his voice calm. “I’d rather keep my earlier history private. But I can explain every part of the work I did here.”Maya stood beside Elena without speaking. Kael did not look to either of them for help. The examiner closed the folder. “The work is what we’re certifying. If we need anything else for the record, we’ll ask.”Director Bell moved aside to let a teacher carry the cooled plate back to the equipment bench. The conversation ended without a false name or a story Kael would have to remember later. When th

  • Chapter 74 - The Brother They Dismissed

Gavin reached toward the control panel, but the examiner put a hand over the switch before he touched it.“Step back, please,” the examiner said. “The test is finished.”The teacher shut off the supply. Inside the clear safety cover, the light beneath the heating plate faded. The device remained on its heatproof tray, well away from the visitors behind the rail.Gavin looked from the falling temperature to his report. “There’s another fault in that unit. It worked when I finished.”The examiner kept the report open. “It worked through one heating check. It failed after cooling. Both checks were required.”“Then the test equipment changed the supply,” Gavin insisted. “You saw it reach the right temperature.”The teacher turned the supply display toward him. Its recorded level had remained steady throughout the test.Kael could see the strip beneath the plate through the cover. The place where it joined the base had shifted slightly as the metal cooled. Gavin’s adjustment had increased t
