The grounds of the combat arena were already thick with people when Fred arrived.

Class 4B gathered around in wide stone arena with raised stands on either side.

Students knew the two combatants were roommates and that they had trained for this day. The instructor raised his hand. "Begin." Kale vanished and Fred took a step back as a jet of water struck the ground where he had been standing. "Water Step!" Kale shouted. Fred drew his sword as his opponent appeared at his side. A stream of water shot from Kale's blade, forcing Fred to block. The force sent him staggering back, but Kale followed up with another strike. "Water Blade!" Kale reinforced his weapon with water and sent a wave of the substance at Fred. Fred blocked the first strike, then the second, and the third. Kale's attacks were faster than before, and each one forced him to move without opening up a weakness. A blast of water shot from Kale's hand, striking the ground in front of Fred and

Chapter 24: No Path vs Blue Path The Royal Academy's arena was filled well before the first bell rang. Class 4B stood in their designated section near the front of the viewing platform while the instructors walked over the arena, inspecting the safety barriers around the battlefield. Above them, several teachers and upper administration officials watched from the seats at the top of the arena. Fred Meyer stood among the other students, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his royal sword. Kale Draven stretched his arms and shoulders beside him. "You're nervous," Kale said. Fred shot him a look. "I'm not." Kale chuckled. "Good. I don't want to hear anyone tell me I'm responsible for making you nervous before the fight." Fred frowned. Their friendship dynamic had changed in the three months since they had first began training. So had their sparring matches. Kale constantly challenged Fred, sometimes testing him with swordplay, other times forcing him to adjust and fight without

For most students, they were a group of nameless upperclassmen that appeared on various academy notices. Fred never really thought about them. Not until a council messenger tracked him down at breakfast."Fred Meyer?"Fred looked up from his food. A young woman in one of the academy's silver council sash stood beside his table."Yes?""Student council summons. You're expected in the council chamber after Magical Theory."Kale looked up. "Did he do something?" The girl gave him an odd look. "Nothing that I know of." Kale leaned back in his chair. "Then count me in." The messenger shook her head. "Only Fred Meyer was summoned

Kale rolled his shoulders."Three rounds."Fred raised an eyebrow."We've already done three.""Then this is the fourth.""You said three.""I changed my mind."Fred sighed. Kale grinned. It was another thing Fred had learned about him. Kale could change the rules to suit him whenever he lost."Fine."Fred raised his sword.
