Chapter 1
Episode 1: The Sacrificial Lamb
"Move faster, Leo, or we’ll leave you for the scavengers," Marcus shouted over his shoulder.
Leo stumbled, the heavy supply pack digging into his bruised shoulders. His older brother didn't even look back as he led the Thorne Guild deeper into the obsidian cavern.
"I'm coming, just give me a second to adjust the straps," Leo gasped, his lungs burning.
The air in the S-Rank dungeon, the 'Black Abyss,' was thick with the scent of ozone and rotting meat. Even as an E-Rank porter, Leo could feel the crushing weight of the mana pressing down on him.
"Stop whining, dead weight," a female hunter sneered, shoving past him.
Leo hit the jagged stone wall, his hand catching on a sharp outcrop. A thin line of blood trickled down his palm, but he wiped it on his pants and hurried to catch up.
"Is this the room?" Marcus asked, his voice echoing through a massive set of stone doors.
The doors were carved with weeping faces and twisted limbs, pulsing with a faint, rhythmic purple light. Two elite guards stepped forward, pushing the heavy slabs open with a synchronized grunt.
"This is the heart of the Abyss," Marcus said, stepping into the chamber. "The place where the legendary core is supposed to be hidden."
Leo followed the group into the room, his eyes widening at the sight of a massive, black altar sitting in the center of a circular platform. The floor was etched with ancient runes that seemed to swallow the light of their torches.
"Something feels wrong," Leo whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "The mana here... it’s not just strong. It’s hungry."
Marcus turned around, a chilling smile playing on his lips that Leo had never seen before. The rest of the guild members formed a semi-circle, effectively cutting off Leo’s only path to the exit.
"You always were perceptive for a failure, Leo," Marcus said, drawing a silver dagger from his belt.
Leo dropped the supply pack, the heavy thud echoing like a death knell in the silent chamber. He looked at his brother, then at the cold, indifferent faces of the hunters he had served for years.
"What are you doing, Marcus? We need to get the core and leave," Leo said, his voice trembling.
"There is no core, you idiot," the female hunter laughed, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword.
Marcus stepped forward, the silver blade humming with a concentrated mana that made Leo’s skin crawl. The light from the altar began to glow brighter, reacting to their presence.
"The Thorne family legacy is built on strength, Leo, but our bloodline has been weakening for generations," Marcus explained calmly.
Leo backed away, but his heels hit the edge of the obsidian altar. He looked down at the dark stone, seeing his own reflection in its polished, glass-like surface.
"I don't understand," Leo stammered, his hands shaking. "What does that have to do with me?"
"The ancient texts say that an S-Rank gate can be forcibly closed and its power harvested, provided a blood sacrifice of the same lineage is offered to the altar," Marcus said.
He reached out, grabbing Leo by the collar of his worn leather vest. The strength of an A-Rank hunter was absolute, and Leo felt like a child in his grip.
"You're my brother! You’re going to kill me for a power boost?" Leo screamed, clawing at Marcus’s iron-tight hand.
"I'm sacrificing a useless E-Rank to ensure the Thorne name rules this world for another century," Marcus spat, his eyes glowing with cold ambition.
With a swift, brutal motion, Marcus plunged the silver dagger into Leo’s stomach. Leo’s eyes went wide, the world turning into a blur of white-hot agony as the blade twisted inside him.
"You were always a mistake, Leo," Marcus whispered into his ear.
Marcus shoved him backward, and Leo collapsed onto the black altar. His blood began to pour out, filling the deep, ancient grooves of the stone with a dark, visceral red.
"Let's go. The boss will manifest once the sacrifice is fully drained," Marcus ordered, turning his back on his dying brother.
The heavy stone doors groaned shut, leaving Leo in total darkness, save for the flickering purple light of the runes. He tried to breathe, but each gasp brought only the metallic taste of blood to his tongue.
"I hate you... I hate all of you..." Leo wheezed, his fingers scratching at the cold stone.
As his blood reached the center of the altar, the floor beneath him didn't just glow—it screamed. A low, vibrating hum began to shake the very foundations of the dungeon.
[Warning: Life signs reaching critical threshold.]
A screen appeared in the darkness, glowing with a deep, blood-red light that seared Leo’s failing vision. He tried to blink, thinking it was a hallucination brought on by blood loss.
"What... is that?" Leo coughed, a spray of red hitting the translucent interface.
[Forbidden Bloodline: 'The Primal' has been detected. System initialization beginning.]
The pain in his stomach suddenly changed, shifting from a sharp sting to a burning heat that felt like molten lead was being poured into his veins. He arched his back, a silent scream tearing through his throat.
[Error: Host body is too weak to contain the Primal Essence. Survival probability: 0.01%.]
"I don't care about the odds," Leo groaned, his voice cracking. "I won't die here. Not like this."
The shadow in the corner of the room began to move, coalescing into the shape of a massive, multi-eyed beast. Its claws scraped against the floor, the sound of a predator approaching its trapped prey.
[Emergency Protocol: Bloodline Devourer initialized.]
The voice that spoke now wasn't the mechanical tone of a standard Hunter System. It was deep, ancient, and echoed with the weight of a thousand dead civilizations.
"Who are you?" Leo whispered, as the beast stepped into the faint light, its jaws dripping with caustic saliva.
[I am the Echo of what you were meant to be,] the voice resonated inside his skull.
The beast lunged, its massive maw opening to crush Leo’s skull. Leo instinctively threw his hand up, the blood from his palm splattering against the creature’s face.
[Do you wish to survive, little lamb?] the Echo asked, the red screen flashing violently.
"Yes! I'll do anything! Just give me the strength to kill them all!" Leo roared, the adrenaline masking his agony for a fleeting second.
The beast froze mid-air, held back by invisible chains of red mana that erupted from the altar. The runes on the floor began to spin, creating a vortex of dark energy that centered on Leo’s wounded chest.
[The price for survival is high. You must surrender that which makes you human.]
Leo looked at his hands, which were starting to turn a pale, sickly gray. The shadows in the room were no longer just darkness; they were an extension of his own reach.
"Take it! Take everything!" Leo cried out as the beast began to dissolve into black mist, being sucked into his very pores.
[Contract accepted. Initializing Primal Devourer System.]
A massive notification filled his entire field of vision, pulsing like a beating heart.
[You have devoured: S-Rank Shadow Sentinel (Incomplete essence).]
[Level Up! Level Up! Level Up!]
Leo felt his bones snapping and reforming, his muscles knitting back together with a density that defied human biology. The wound in his stomach closed, leaving behind a faint, jagged scar that glowed with a dull red light.
"Is it over?" Leo asked, standing up on the altar.
He felt different. The air no longer felt heavy; it felt like a tool he could manipulate. He looked at his hands, clenching them into fists as a surge of raw, unbridled power raced through his core.
[The hunger has only just begun, Leo Thorne,] the Echo whispered.
The stone doors at the far end of the chamber began to shake. Something was pounding on them from the outside, but it wasn't his brother—it was something much larger.
"Tell me what I have to do," Leo said, his voice now carrying an unnatural resonance.
[The System demands a tithe for the life it has granted you,] the voice replied.
A new quest screen appeared, the text written in what looked like fresh blood.
[Main Quest: The First Meal. Objective: Devour the soul of the one who betrayed you.]
Leo looked toward the doors, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face. He could sense Marcus's mana signature moving away, heading toward the surface, thinking he had won.
"I’m coming for you, Marcus," Leo whispered to the empty room.
The red screen flickered one last time, displaying a final warning that made Leo’s blood run cold.
"Give me your soul, and the throne shall be yours," the Echo whispered.

"Smells like a rat carcass boiled in ten-year-old used oil. I swear, I’d rather be rotting back in the bunker than have to sniff this appetite-killer!""Varrick, shut your mouth and focus on your weapon!" Sarah shot back in a sharp whisper, th
