Chapter 3: Father, is that you?
last update2025-02-06 09:24:13

A tall, well-framed man walked into his home after a very long time. He had a shirt on with baggy jeans, which differed from his previous demeanor of clothing. Weird enough, his shadow was acting funny. It was detached from him only to form a guard that stood behind him, respectfully.

"It's been five years, for five years I worked for the government to end the catastrophe before it came, and yet..." the man sighed as he took off the mask. His heart shook as he watched his estate being torn down by monsters.

He knew things were coming to this, but he also needed to be sure his son could adapt fast enough

BOOM

A sound hit the whole area like an earthquake.

'What was that? could it be an explosion?' his thoughts

"Hmm, it came from there. "Being sure of the directions, he sped while readying for battle.

The hallway came into sight,  so was emotion.... he felt anger!

"Which pest ruined the hallway? It's my favorite part of the building, and where is my chandelier! Gripped by the loss of hundreds million dollars,

he approached the crater in the middle of the hall and found Max as well as the remnant of the chandelier.

My son did this?

“Strange things are very surprising things ...” Magnus thought to himself as he finally found his half

dead son, but the weirdness only seemed to have just begun.

BANG BANG

**heavy heart Beating..!

The sound kept going on and on, increasing the throbbing in Max’s head. He opened his eyes to

low-glare night lighting. He groaned as he tried to sit up properly, trying to make sense of where he

was.

Aggh!

Groaning, it seems like he dislocated his shoulder. The adrenaline of the battle already worn off

Now he felt dozens of pronging pain stimuli smashing into his brain.—

“Max?!''

tried opening his eyes to see the owner of the voice, but the sharp intake of light through his eyes

caused him to retract his eyelids even faster

But the brief opening was enough to see who.... he saw his father, but he couldn’t be sure whether it was

dreaming, but what he knew was that he was currently in agonizing pain

Another set of throbbing pain struck his forehead

AGHHH!!!

A hand reached for him quickly. He thought he heard words of concern, but he had no vision, and the

voices weren’t clear; he could only classify everything as an imagination.

A sharp sting at his arm followed by a hot press of fluid rushing through his veins, a burning sensation in his throat, a sweaty forehead, and shivering hands as his body shook.

furiously.

Through the eyes of Magnus, a different scene was playing; an empty syringe fell from his hands as

His shadow guard took a step back in fear of the shockwave arising before falling on his bottom.

max body levitated, his clothes were blown to bits by his aura alone as he continued to levitate a

spiral indigo marking appeared on the left side of his chest with a strand of the strange markings reaching his waist, where a fuzzy button eye and 'X' threaded eye mark with a mouth made into a zipline at the edge of the teeth.

A purse appearing out of nowhere wasn't weird enough; the fact that it stuck to max skin like glue made

it scary.....

A ghostlike version of the bag appeared with huge puppy eyes. It blinked at Magnus,

” So this was the power of a preform mimic. How fearsome. Unfortunately, I can't help you to mature

faster to stay safe in this new, dangerous world. "Accompanying those words were reddened eyes and a sour throat. To him, this might as well be farewell to his son

Magnus waved his hand, the ring on his index finger shimmering with a glow that covered a portion of the space ahead of him. That portion of space was covered with neat male clothing, though a lil over size, but it was better than being naked.

Magnus then smiled, a ray of light shot through the room, and vanished. Soon, all that was left in the room was Max and a huge crater

Not quite long, another figure arrived, took Max away as he maneuvered in a manner that reminded one of ninjas.

He managed to find an underground space and then placed Max in before he went out to scout, before

returning to watch max then unconsciously dousing off.

Siri led the way, but it was really her memories that pulled them forward. With her quiet guidance—and Jane’s steady presence at her side—they began retracing the places where she and Dr. Colosso, now Kran, had once circled each other as an almost-couple. They walked through stretches of the facility and the broken city that were haunted more by ghosts of the past than by anything visibly dangerous. They stopped where he used to wait for her between shifts, at the cracked bench by the outer corridor window where the sun bled orange through dust. They paused in the narrow alley that once served as their shortcut, where the walls seemed to lean together in a conspiratorial hush. Siri’s voice shook as she pointed out the quiet corners where he’d rambled about theories and futures and impossible dreams in place of confessing feelings he never quite dared to say aloud.Jane said little during all of this. She didn’t know the old Colosso, didn’t share these memories, but she understood grie

An orb glowed on a ring-shaped plate. A scientist wearing a face shield was reassembling the orb with a picker and spatula for what felt like the ten-thousandth time. He had tried multiple patterns already. Hopefully, this time would be a success."Hey, Lorne, would you hand me the chip of the core? That should be the final piece to this puzzle. Let's pray it doesn't explode." The scientist grimaced, extending a hand toward Lorne, his new assistant, who was holding a chunk of Nest Core worth dozens of lives."Here, Professor," Lorne answered. It had been three days, yet they still hadn’t succeeded in creating what they were after. There wasn’t much time. According to the military, the system might crash the moment the Merc Association obtained a C rank or a New Path. The professor attached the chip of Nest Core to the open part of the core. “Is that the last one?” Jane said to the secretary, who was tidying up the papers on the table. She, on the other hand, was sipping her morning coffee from her mug.“Yes, Captain, that was the last one,” the secretary said anxiously.“Leave the rest to me, then,” Jane reassured her, her hands picking up the paper on the table before she took her seat and gave the chair a twirl.Sigh...“I sent letters to five different destinations, secretly, to those I found fitting for the Special Squad. Those I could trust, as they would focus more on missions outside the base,” Jane said out loud, though she didn’t seem to be talking to anyone. She had chosen individuals known for their resourcefulness and who had proven their loyalty through past missions. Each had unique qualities: a strategist who could outsmart adversaries, a medic who excelled in high-pressure situations, and a technician with unrivalled skills in hacking and engineering, making them indispensable for missions beyond base bor

The commander had taken it upon himself to honour the heroes who brought hope back to the last lamplight of humanity. With the apocalypse in full swing, it was hard to make anything feel official, but the military managed, making it at least half as good as ceremonies from the old world.Jane watched the setup. To her, all these were mere formalities that could have been skipped—yet the constant, rapid tempo of her heartbeat said otherwise.Father… little Jane hasn’t let you down.Jane’s cheeks went wet as tears slipped down onto her fist, clenched tightly at her waist.“Is everything fine, Captain?
