The steel bars of the cage trap us in a cold, small space.
Before I can react, Lyra swings the heavy energy rifle around, pressing the barrel hard against my chest. Her eyes are completely empty of the warmth we shared just moments ago. She is calculating every second, every move, and every option to ensure she is the one who walks out of this room alive.
"Do not make me do this, Kian," Lyra says, her voice steady and cold. "The exit pass only allows one biometric signature. If we stay in here, the gas will fill the cage in sixty seconds. One of us has to press the release override from the inside control box, and that means the other person stays behind."
I look down at the energy rifle pointing at my heart. My hands are free, but my mind is spinning. I trusted her in the slums of River City. I trusted her when the floor fell away in the hallway. Now, her survival programming has taken total control, turning her into an enemy who will sacrifice me without hesitation.
"You planned this from the moment we woke up in the white room," I say, keeping my voice low and calm.
"I am just playing by the rules the system gave us," Lyra replies, her finger resting lightly against the trigger. "Step back toward the corner, Kian. Let me reach the control box."
Instead of stepping back, I take half a step forward, ignoring the metal barrel touching my shirt. "If you wanted me dead, you could have let the guard shoot me back in the corridor. Why save me just to kill me here?"
Lyra's eyes flicker for a split second, a tiny crack in her cold exterior. "Because I needed someone to carry the rifle through the sector gate. But now we are at the end of the line."
A loud hiss fills the cage. Thick white gas begins to pour from small vents in the floor, hissing as it hits the metal ground. The smell is sharp and stinging, burning the inside of my nose instantly.
"The gas is starting," I say, watching her expression closely. "If we fight now, both of us will pass out before either of us reaches the door."
Lyra glances down at the floor as the white smoke rises around our boots. Her grip on the rifle slips just a fraction of an inch. That is the exact moment I move.
I grab the barrel of the energy rifle with both hands and push it upward. The gun fires a blinding bolt of energy straight into the ceiling of the cage, sending a shower of red sparks raining down on our heads.
"Kian, stop!" Lyra shouts, trying to pull the weapon back.
We struggle against each other inside the cramped space, our boots slipping on the metal floor as the thick gas fills the air. She is fast and ruthless, using her elbows and knees to strike at my ribs, fighting with the absolute fury of someone who refuses to lose. But I have my own reasons to survive. I did not fight my way out of a fake life just to die in a cage as a test subject.
With a hard twist of my wrists, I knock the rifle out of her hands. It clatters loudly against the steel bars and falls out of the cage through a wide gap in the bottom.
Without the gun, Lyra lunges straight at me, tackling me against the cold metal wall. We hit the bars hard, knocking the wind out of my lungs. She reaches for the emergency override button on the wall panel just inches from my head. Her hand slams against the glass screen, but instead of opening the door, a loud alarm blares through the room.
Warning. System override rejected. Dual biometric input required, the robotic voice announces overhead.
Lyra freezes, her hand still pressed against the glass panel. She turns her head to look at me, her chest heaving as she breathes in the stinging gas.
"Dual input," she whispers, her voice filled with sudden realization. "The system lied. It never wanted just one of us to die."
"It wants us to work together, or it wants both of us to fail," I say, coughing as the smoke fills my throat.
Before either of us can move, the floor beneath the cage drops away completely. With a sickening mechanical drop, we fall downward into the dark abyss below, screaming as the cage plunges straight into the heart of the facility.
We crash hard onto a cold, hard floor in total darkness. The cage door flies open from the impact. I groan, rolling onto my side and pushing the heavy smoke away from my face.
"Lyra?" I call out, my voice echoing in the vast, silent room.
There is no answer.
I pull myself up to my feet, wiping dust and sweat from my forehead. A single overhead light flickers on, casting a harsh yellow glow across the room.
Lyra is gone. In her place, sitting on the cold floor in the center of the room, is a small, glowing black box with my full name engraved on the lid.
I walk toward it slowly, my heart pounding against my ribs. I kneel down and reach out my hand, my fingers brushing against the cold metal surface.
The lid of the box pops open automatically. Inside sits a small glass vial filled with a glowing blue liquid, and a handwritten note attached to the cap.
I pick up the note and read the words written in clean, sharp handwriting:
Welcome to the real game, Kian. Lyra is already in the upper tower. If you want to see her alive again, drink what is inside the vial before the timer hits zero.
I look up from the note. On the far wall, a massive digital clock springs to life, counting down from ten minutes in bright, glowing red numbers.

The System Crash
Sparks burst from the broken console, and the screen goes completely dark.Director Vance jumps up from his chair on the video feed as his face turns red with anger. The smooth and polite look he wore just a second ago vanishes instantly."You stupid fool!" Vance shouts through the dead speakers before the connection cuts out completely. "You have no idea what you just destroyed!"The silver collar around Lyra's neck stops glowing with that dangerous red light. With a soft click, the lock pops open and falls to the floor. Lyra coughs, shaking her head as she pulls herself upright against the metal chair. Her hands are still bound behind her back, so I rush forward, grab the thick plastic bands, and snap them apart with the new strength the blue vial gave me.She rubs her wrists, taking a deep breath of air before looking up at me with her sharp eyes."That was reckless, Kian," she says, though a tiny hint of respect shows in her voice. The Blue Vial
Ten minutes is all I have before the clock runs out and Lyra pays the price for my hesitation.I stare at the small glass vial sitting inside the open black box. The blue liquid inside spins and bubbles, casting a strange glow against my face in the dark room. The note rests beside it, reminding me that Lyra is locked away in the upper tower while I am down here in the dirt.I pick up the vial and pull the rubber stopper out with my teeth. The liquid smells sweet like winter fruit, but my instincts tell me it is something much more dangerous. It could be poison designed to wipe my memory for good, or it could be a performance upgrade meant to push my body past human limits for the next trial.Either way, I do not have a choice.I tilt my head back and swallow the glowing

The Only Way Out
A red laser beam points straight at my chest from the barrel of the heavy gun.The armored guard in front of us does not say a word. He pulls the trigger without a second thought. A bolt of hot energy shoots across the hallway, missing my shoulder by inches and leaving a black scorch mark on the metal wall behind me."Move!" Lyra shouts, grabbing my arm and pulling me hard to the left.We dive behind a thick steel pillar just as another energy blast hits the ground where we were standing. Sparks fly everywhere, and the smell of burning metal fills the air. My heart beats fast against my ribs, but I do not have time to think about fear. The timer on my wrist keeps ticking down. We have less than twelve hours, and now we have armed guards trying to kill us before we even reach the first sector gate.
The New Rules
The roar of the wind stops the second I step past the threshold.I stand on a high metal balcony overlooking a massive, glowing city that stretches as far as my eyes can see. This place looks nothing like the dirty streets of River City. Towering glass skyscrapers pierce a purple sky, and bright neon ships fly between buildings on invisible highways. Alarms blare in the distance, and red warning lights pulse against the walls."Welcome to Phase Two, subject Kian," a flat, mechanical voice echoes from speakers mounted above the door. "Your survival timer has begun. You have twelve hours to reach the central sector before the sector locks down permanently."I look down at my wrist. A bright red number glows on my skin: 11:59:59. It counts down second by second."Kian!"I spin around at the sound of that familiar voice.Lyra stands on a lower platform across a wide gap, wearing the same gray uniform as me. Her hair is messy, and her eyes are wide with panic. She looks around frantically,
