A red laser beam points straight at my chest from the barrel of the heavy gun.
The armored guard in front of us does not say a word. He pulls the trigger without a second thought. A bolt of hot energy shoots across the hallway, missing my shoulder by inches and leaving a black scorch mark on the metal wall behind me.
"Move!" Lyra shouts, grabbing my arm and pulling me hard to the left.
We dive behind a thick steel pillar just as another energy blast hits the ground where we were standing. Sparks fly everywhere, and the smell of burning metal fills the air. My heart beats fast against my ribs, but I do not have time to think about fear. The timer on my wrist keeps ticking down. We have less than twelve hours, and now we have armed guards trying to kill us before we even reach the first sector gate.
"We cannot fight him with bare hands," I say, keeping my back pressed flat against the cold steel pillar. "He has full body armor and a high-grade energy weapon."
"We do not need to fight him," Lyra replies calmly. Her eyes are sharp and focused, scanning the roof above us. "Look at the automated fire system right above his head. The red sensor light is blinking."
I look up and see a small security turret mounted on the ceiling behind the guard. It has a tiny lens spinning in a circle, looking for targets.
"You want to trick the security system into shooting him?" I ask.
"Exactly," Lyra says with a quick, cold smile. "He is programmed to hunt subjects, but the base defense system views any unauthorized armed person in this sector as an intruder. We just need to make it think he is the threat."
Before I can say another word, Lyra reaches into her uniform pocket, pulls out a small metal button she ripped off her sleeve during our fall, and throws it hard across the hallway.
The button hits the far wall with a sharp ping.
The armored guard instantly turns his head toward the sound, raising his rifle. The moment he steps forward to check the corner, the security turret on the ceiling stops spinning. Its red lens locks onto the glowing red seals of his heavy armor.
Warning. Unauthorized combat unit detected, a robotic voice announces from the ceiling speakers.
Twin lasers shoot down from the turret before the guard can turn around. The beams hit his back armor with a deafening crash, melting the metal instantly. The guard drops his rifle and falls face down onto the floor, unmoving.
"See?" Lyra says, stepping out from behind the pillar with absolute confidence. "Brains always beat brute force. Even in a fake world."
I walk over to the fallen guard and pick up his heavy energy rifle. It feels heavy in my hands, but the digital display on the side shows the battery is still ninety percent full. I hand the rifle to Lyra, and she takes it without hesitation, checking the scope with practiced ease.
"Let us keep moving," I say, looking back at the glowing leaderboard down the hall.
We run down the long metal corridor, dodging debris and jumping over broken cables. Every minute counts. The red numbers on our wrists keep going down, reminding us that time is running out.
After ten minutes of running, we reach a massive circular door marked with a glowing sign: SECTOR 1 EXIT.
A control panel stands next to the door, flashing a bright blue light. I walk up to it and press my hand against the glass scanner.
A sharp beep sounds, and the screen lights up with red text.
Access Denied. Only one verified biometric signature allowed per exit pass.
I stare at the screen in disbelief. My hands tighten into fists. The rules on the leaderboard were not a joke or a warning. The system is literally built to make us turn on each other. If only one person can leave through this door, then either I open it and leave Lyra behind to die, or she opens it and leaves me here to face the facility guards alone.
"Kian," Lyra says softly from behind me.
I turn around slowly. Lyra is standing a few feet away, holding the energy rifle we took from the guard. The barrel of the gun is pointed straight at the center of my chest.
Her face is completely blank. The warmth and friendship I thought we shared in the slums, and the trust we built while escaping the lab, are entirely gone. Her eyes are cold and distant, mirroring the exact programming of a survivor who will do anything to win.
"You knew about this rule from the very beginning, didn't you?" I ask, my voice dropping low.
"I told you," Lyra replies, her finger resting lightly against the trigger. "My tactical programming is still active. I am programmed to win this test, Kian. And I am not going to let a fake past or a fake friendship stop me from getting out of here."
"So you are going to shoot me?" I ask, taking one slow step toward her.
"If I have to," she says, her voice not shaking at all. "Step away from the scanner, Kian. Or I will pull the trigger right now."
Before I can answer, the floor beneath our feet suddenly drops away with a deafening roar. The entire control panel sinks into the ground, and a massive steel cage slams down from the ceiling, trapping both of us inside the small space together.
From the shadows behind the exit door, a slow, mocking laugh echoes through the metal chamber.
"Very good, subjects," a new voice speaks over the intercom, sounding pleased. "Now let us see who survives the final round."

The System Crash
Sparks burst from the broken console, and the screen goes completely dark.Director Vance jumps up from his chair on the video feed as his face turns red with anger. The smooth and polite look he wore just a second ago vanishes instantly."You stupid fool!" Vance shouts through the dead speakers before the connection cuts out completely. "You have no idea what you just destroyed!"The silver collar around Lyra's neck stops glowing with that dangerous red light. With a soft click, the lock pops open and falls to the floor. Lyra coughs, shaking her head as she pulls herself upright against the metal chair. Her hands are still bound behind her back, so I rush forward, grab the thick plastic bands, and snap them apart with the new strength the blue vial gave me.She rubs her wrists, taking a deep breath of air before looking up at me with her sharp eyes."That was reckless, Kian," she says, though a tiny hint of respect shows in her voice. The Blue Vial
Ten minutes is all I have before the clock runs out and Lyra pays the price for my hesitation.I stare at the small glass vial sitting inside the open black box. The blue liquid inside spins and bubbles, casting a strange glow against my face in the dark room. The note rests beside it, reminding me that Lyra is locked away in the upper tower while I am down here in the dirt.I pick up the vial and pull the rubber stopper out with my teeth. The liquid smells sweet like winter fruit, but my instincts tell me it is something much more dangerous. It could be poison designed to wipe my memory for good, or it could be a performance upgrade meant to push my body past human limits for the next trial.Either way, I do not have a choice.I tilt my head back and swallow the glowing
The Cage Test
The steel bars of the cage trap us in a cold, small space. Before I can react, Lyra swings the heavy energy rifle around, pressing the barrel hard against my chest. Her eyes are completely empty of the warmth we shared just moments ago. She is calculating every second, every move, and every option to ensure she is the one who walks out of this room alive."Do not make me do this, Kian," Lyra says, her voice steady and cold. "The exit pass only allows one biometric signature. If we stay in here, the gas will fill the cage in sixty seconds. One of us has to press the release override from the inside control box, and that means the other person stays behind."I look down at the energy rifle pointing at my heart. My hands are free, but my mind is spinning. I trusted her in the slums of River City. I trusted her when the

The New Rules
The roar of the wind stops the second I step past the threshold.I stand on a high metal balcony overlooking a massive, glowing city that stretches as far as my eyes can see. This place looks nothing like the dirty streets of River City. Towering glass skyscrapers pierce a purple sky, and bright neon ships fly between buildings on invisible highways. Alarms blare in the distance, and red warning lights pulse against the walls."Welcome to Phase Two, subject Kian," a flat, mechanical voice echoes from speakers mounted above the door. "Your survival timer has begun. You have twelve hours to reach the central sector before the sector locks down permanently."I look down at my wrist. A bright red number glows on my skin: 11:59:59. It counts down second by second."Kian!"I spin around at the sound of that familiar voice.Lyra stands on a lower platform across a wide gap, wearing the same gray uniform as me. Her hair is messy, and her eyes are wide with panic. She looks around frantically,
