Twenty seconds.
Jake looked at Elena. Broken. Sobbing. Begging for help.
Then at his phone. The System's countdown ticking.
Fifteen seconds.
His mind raced. Arguments for and against.
She betrayed you. She chose Victor. She laughed while you suffered.
But she's pregnant. Desperate. The baby didn't choose this.
Ten seconds.
Derek's voice in his head. "What kind of man do you want to be?"
Five seconds.
Jake made his decision.
He called his assistant. "Transfer fifty thousand dollars to Elena Morrison's account. Today."
Elena's head snapped up. "What?"
"Give me your account number."
She fumbled for her phone. Hands shaking. Read off the numbers.
Jake's assistant confirmed. "Transfer initiated. Should clear within an hour."
He hung up. Looked at Elena. "That's fifty thousand. Covers six months rent, medical expenses, food. Use it wisely."
Elena stared at him. Disbelief. "You're... you're really helping me?"
"I'm also helping you find an apartment. Somewhere decent. Safe for a baby. My assistant will handle it. She'll call you tomorrow with options."
"Jake, I don't know what to say..."
"Say nothing. Just take care of yourself and that baby. Make better choices than you did with me."
Elena's face crumpled. "I will. I promise."
Jake stood. Walked to the window. Put distance between them. "This is the last time, Elena. Don't contact me again. Don't ask for more. Don't show up at my office. This is it. We're done. Forever. You understand?"
"Yes. Yes. I understand."
"Good. My assistant will be in touch about the apartment. Now leave."
Elena stood. Wiped her tears. "Thank you, Jake. Really. You didn't have to do this."
"I know."
She walked to the door. Stopped. Turned back. "I really am sorry. For everything. You deserved better."
"I know that too."
Elena nodded. Opened the door.
And froze.
Sophia Laurent stood in the hallway. Documents in hand. She'd clearly just arrived.
The two women looked at each other. Elena in her worn designer dress. Tear-stained face. Sophia in perfect business attire. Composed. Powerful.
"Excuse me," Elena said quietly. Walked past Sophia. Disappeared down the hall.
Sophia watched her go. Then looked at Jake. Her expression unreadable.
She stepped into the office. Closed the door behind her.
"That was Elena. Your ex-wife."
"Yes."
"She was crying. But not the upset kind. The grateful kind."
Jake didn't respond. Just waited.
Sophia set the documents on his desk. "I came to have you sign these partnership amendments. But I heard voices. Waited outside. I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but..."
"You heard."
"Some of it. Enough." Sophia crossed her arms. "You gave her fifty thousand dollars."
"Yes."
"And you're helping her find an apartment."
"Yes."
Sophia studied him. Silent. Calculating. "Why?"
Jake walked back to his desk. Sat. "Because she needed help."
"She cheated on you. Left you for Victor Steele. Chose his money over your marriage. Watched him humiliate you and did nothing."
"I know all that."
"Then why help her?"
Jake looked up. Met Sophia's eyes. "Because she's pregnant. Broke. Getting evicted. And the baby didn't do anything wrong."
"So you're funding your ex-wife's life out of charity?"
"I'm making sure an innocent child doesn't suffer because of their parents' mistakes."
Sophia's expression softened slightly. "That's admirable. But it's also more than most people would do. Especially after what she did to you."
Jake stood. Walked around the desk. "What do you want me to say, Sophia? That I enjoyed watching her beg? That I felt satisfaction seeing her broken?"
"Didn't you?"
"For about thirty seconds. Then I just felt tired. Tired of anger. Tired of revenge. Tired of being at war with everyone who's ever hurt me."
He stopped in front of her. "Isabella wants to destroy me. Victor wants to destroy me. I fight them because I have to. Because they won't stop. But Elena? She's not my enemy anymore. She's just someone who made terrible choices and is paying for them."
Sophia's arms uncrossed. "Most people would disagree. They'd say she deserves to suffer."
"Maybe. But I've learned something building this empire. You can't win every fight by being ruthless. Sometimes mercy is stronger than revenge."
"How so?"
"Because being ruthless to everyone makes you a monster. And I won't become what they are. I won't become Isabella, destroying people because I can. I won't become Victor, bitter and vindictive. I'll fight when I need to. But I won't lose myself in the process."
Sophia was quiet. Her dark eyes searching his face.
"After last night," she said slowly. "After you pulled away. I thought maybe you were just being cautious. Smart. Protecting the business."
"I was."
"But this? Helping Elena after everything she did?" Sophia stepped closer. "This shows me who you really are. Not the businessman. Not the developer. The person underneath."
"And who's that?"
"Someone who remembers what it's like to have nothing. Someone who chooses kindness even when it's not deserved. Someone who..." She paused. Searching for words.
"Someone who what?"
Sophia's hand touched his face. Gentle. "Someone worth falling for."
Jake's breath caught. "Sophia..."
"I've been with men who talk about honor and integrity but abandon it the moment it costs them something. You just gave fifty thousand dollars to a woman who betrayed you. Because it was the right thing to do. Even though it hurt."
"It did hurt."
"I know. I saw your face when she left. You wanted to hate her. Wanted her to suffer. But you chose mercy anyway."
She stepped closer. Close enough that Jake could smell her perfume.
"Last night, I asked you why we were fighting this. The attraction between us. You said it was complicated. That mixing business and personal was dangerous."
"I meant it."
"I know you did. But watching you with Elena just now. Seeing you choose to be better rather than bitter." Her voice dropped to a whisper. "That's why I'm falling for you."
Jake's heart pounded. "Sophia..."
She leaned in. Slowly. Giving him time to pull away.
He didn't.
Their lips met. Soft at first. Tentative. Then deeper. More certain.
Sophia's arms wrapped around his neck. His hands moved to her waist. Pulling her closer.
The kiss was everything the almost-kiss last night had promised. And more.
When they finally pulled apart, both breathing hard, Sophia smiled. "I've wanted to do that for weeks."
"So have I."
"Then why did you wait?"
"Because I was scared. Of complicating things. Of losing the partnership. Of getting hurt again."
"And now?"
Jake looked at her. Really looked. At the woman who'd invested five hundred million in his company. Who'd stood beside him against Isabella. Who saw him. Really saw him.
"Now I'm more scared of losing you."
Sophia kissed him again. Softer this time. "Good answer."
She rested her forehead against his. "So what happens now?"
"Now we see where this goes. Together."
"What about the business?"
"We're smart enough to separate the two. Professional during work. Personal after."
"You think we can do that?"
"I think we can try."
Sophia smiled. Kissed him one more time. Quick. Sweet.
"That's why I'm falling for you.”
