Admiration Withdrawn

“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.

“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”

“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration.

“That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain.

She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes.

It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly.

Brian swallowed everything in good faith.

After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself.

No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars.

“I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination was not dampened.

“This is very important, Winnie. I am sure that your boss will be happy to hear what I have to offer.”

“Let me guess…” Winnie rolled her eyes at him again, glaring impatiently.

“You are here to propose a partnership with my boss? You are here because you have heard that the company is now doing so well and you want a piece of the cake.”

Brian took a deep breath, and his silence meant admittance.

“I knew it!” Winnie sniggered, shaking her head.

“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. You can’t see my boss, and that is final.”

She gave Brian one last look of disdain before she returned to her keyboard.

From the way her fingers clicked casually, it was obvious that she really wasn’t doing anything serious.

But she was better off doing that than paying attention to the failure that was standing before her in the form of a man.

Brian sighed heavily, and then he looked around.

Some of the people around were beginning to think that Brian was causing a nuisance, pointing at him while they whispered.

“Why is that man standing there?” One of the workers in the building asked her colleague, drawing his immediate attention to the scene.

“I don’t know.” The young man said quietly, observing from where they stood.

“I think we should go and find out.” He suggested, and since they seemed to like gossiping more than doing the actual work that paid them, they marched across the hall, heading directly to the reception.

Brian who had been ignored for over two minutes didn’t notice them until the young man cleared his throat.

He turned slowly, sighting two young people standing behind him.

“Hello…” He waved at them with a smile, but they ignored him, turning to the reception.

“Winnie? Is there a problem?” The young man asked, turning to Brian with a stern look.

“Is this man giving you trouble?” He asked, glaring at Brian.

“Thank goodness you are here, Dave.” Winnie sighed as soon as she lifted her face, then she turned to the lady.

“Mira? I am glad you both are here.” She paused for a few seconds, turning her eyes to Brian.

Then she pointed at Brian, eyes still glowing with resentment.

“That’s Brian Regel. And he says he is here to see Mr. Benson.”

The name she mentioned certainly rang a bell, but the two young employees were having a hard time figuring it out.

Then it clicked in Mira’s mind, causing her to gasp.

“Wait!” She turned to Brian with wide eyes, then she pointed at him.

Dave was bemused, staring at Mira with a narrowed gaze.

“You are the former owner of this Company. The one who sold his company because of a woman.” Mira announced, so loudly that a passerby even heard her and stopped to hear the full details.

Brian felt a cold jitter running through his veins.

He thought he had gotten past that ridicule, but his speculations were wrong.

He was definitely going to deal with that costly mistake for a long time, possibly for years.

“Why has he come here?” Dave broke the silence, turning to Winnie for explanations.

“He says he is here to see the boss,” Winnie remarked, taking another spiteful look at Brian.

“What for?” Mira turned to Brian, her eyes flashing with contempt.

“I think he is here to buy the company back!” Dave said with sarcasm, laughing like a jackal.

Mira scoffed, then she drew closer to Brian.

“Is that true, Mr. Regal? Have you come to buy the company back?” She inquired with a mocking tone, looking Brian in the eyes.

“I don’t think he has the money for that. He squandered all the proceeds from selling his company on his wife, remember?”

“Oh! That’s true, Dave!” Mira nodded with a wry smile, and then she sighed heavily.

She turned to Brian and pouted, expressing fake pity.

“It must have been a horrible experience for you, Brian Regal. Realizing that your boss was ramming your wife even after you sold your legacy to fund her projects.”

Brian felt anger brewing inside him, but he couldn’t say a word.

His lips were sealed, his heart beating like racing horses.

“You can’t talk?” Dave flashed his taunting eyes before him, then he snapped his fingers as though Brian was drifting out of consciousness.

“You should be a man and defend yourself, Mr. Regal. That’s what a real man should do. Not stand there and face disgrace like an award.”

“Maybe he doesn’t know what to say, Dave.” Mira interrupted, rolling her eyes at Brian.

“I think he is here to beg for some money. But I am certain that Mr. Benson is definitely going to turn him down.”

She spoke with so much confidence, contempt reeking alongside it in her voice.

Brian cleared his throat, and then he turned to the receptionist.

“Please, lady. Kindly tell your boss that I am here to see him. This could land you in trouble.”

Winnie gasped, covering her mouth while she stared widely at Brian.

The next second, she glowered at him, firing deadly shots with her eyes.

“Who the hell do you think you are to tell me how to do my job?!” She fired, grabbing the receiver of the telephone on her desk and placing it to her ear.

“I am going to call the guards to throw you out before now. I shouldn’t have listened to the nonsense you came here to say.”

  • Greeenfield Co

Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.

“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth. “Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.” “Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.” Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop. The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes. “Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.” “But…” “You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident

  • Uninvited

Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”

  • The Kirks

“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was

  • The Response

“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
