Fear Of the Unknown

A sudden silence took over, sweeping across the hall.

But it could barely last for a few seconds before murmuring took over.

“Does it mean that Mr. Sterling will be fired?”

“He has only been the Manager of Prime Tech for three years. How come?”

“How does that stranger know about this?”

There were too many questions that needed to be answered, the eyes in the crowd demanding an immediate response.

Soon, the inquisitions were echoing inside Charles’s mind, causing him to shake his head.

“That’s enough!” He roared at Brian, breathing fury.

“Take this liar out of this place! He knows nothing!”

“You are the one who has refused to say the truth, Charles Sterling.” Brian was in another mode.

He was not just speaking with confidence, he was speaking with authority.

His eyes spread toward the two guards standing bemused in front of him, then he exhaled sharply.

“Prime Tech is about to have a new Manager. I am sure you wouldn’t want to be fired when he finally arrives. This company pays you too well for you to mess things up for yourselves.”

The guards looked at each other, silently pondering Brian’s words.

For the umpteenth time, they to Charles, but he still didn’t look like he was going to spill the truth.

“How do you know this, Sir?” One of them asked as soon as he returned his gaze to Brian, eyes wide with curiosity.

“Trust me. I do…” Brian’s response was unsatisfactory, but since Charles had said nothing, the guards knew not what to do.

They just stared at the stranger with very sensitive information, silence gradually taking over them.

Arya drifted closer to Brian, and then she grabbed his left arm.

“Listen to me, Brian…” She whispered, leaning closer to his ear.

“I don’t think you should continue with this misleading information. Prime Tech could sue us for this…” Her tone began to break at the last words, her eyes begging for Brian’s silence.

“No one is suing us, Arya,” Brian said with a firm tone, and then he pointed to Charles.

“He knows that I speak the truth. That is why he has not been able to counter my words.”

Arya took a deep breath, and then she turned to Charles.

She observed him for a while, scanning through his silence and body language.

Though he seemed like he was still holding onto his valor, there was something different about his posture.

Charles was standing like an oak tree that was battling the force of the wind.

His feet changed from one position to the other, but none seemed like it was suitable for his crashing body.

The weight of the apprehension that gripped him was becoming unbearable, beads of sweat gradually spreading across his forehead.

He watched Brian march toward him, yet he couldn’t say a word.

Everyone watched, their shock echoing even in the silence.

“I know you are dumbfounded, Charles…” Brian said only to the Manager’s hearing, then he cleared his throat before he continued.

“But I believe we can come to a mutual understanding.” He moved his eyes to Charles’s visage, savoring his doused expression.

“Just let me through, and we don’t need to expose the skeletons in your cupboard. I know about your money-laundering case. I know everything.”

Charles’s breath hung inside his chest, and his heart began to pound violently against his ribcage.

His bulging eyes were focused on Brian, his fingers shaking as though someone was dragging them with invisible ropes.

“Who are you?” He asked, his voice low and breaking.

“That is of no importance, Charles…” Brian chuckled softly, and then he took two steps backward.

“Just let me through, and I will pretend as though I know nothing, alright?”

He sniggered, his smirk intact as he stared at the Manager.

Charles said nothing, but it didn’t look like he was left with any choice.

He had a reputation to protect, his mind still pondering about the identity of the stranger standing before him.

A few seconds later, Romeo drifted closer to him, bending before he could speak to him.

“Why are you so quiet, Mr. Sterling? We should be talking about sending this imposter out of this place so that we can proceed!”

He waited and waited, then his expression fell.

Obviously, his scowl was going to waste, slowly replaced by a collapsed expression.

“What’s going on?” He asked, his voice barely able to hold still.

Charles turned to him, then he cleared his throat.

“I think you should let this man in, Mr. Jones. I see no reason why we can’t allow one person in. The hall is large enough to contain all of us.”

“What?!” Romeo’s eyes glittered with disbelief, his mouth agape while he stared at the middle-aged man.

“You are joking. This has to be a joke…” He looked around as though he was in search of something, returning his gaze when he still couldn’t find whatever it was that came to his mind.

“You were about to tell your guards to haul him out. What changed?!” His voice was dripping with disappointment, coupled with a little annoyance.

“Nothing changed, Mr. Jones. Just let the young man in…”

“But..”

“No buts!” Charles barked, pointing Romeo in the face.

His outburst had sent the other man into silence, causing him to stare with wide eyes.

“We are done with this conversation, Romeo. We have a very important event to carry out, and I will not spend so much time, dealing with such an insignificant issue.”

Charles sighed heavily, and then he gave Brian one long look before he turned and disappeared into the hallway behind him.

His guards followed him at once, each increasing his pace as they tried to catch up with him.

Everyone watched, and jaws dropped even after he was out of sight.

  • Admiration Withdrawn

“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration. “That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain. She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes. It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly. Brian swallowed everything in good faith. After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself. No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars. “I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination

  • Greeenfield Co

Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.

  • Sharp Mouth

“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth. “Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.” “Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.” Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop. The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes. “Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.” “But…” “You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident

  • Uninvited

Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”

  • The Kirks

“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was

  • The Response

“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
