No Way Out

Those words hit Arya like a cannon, causing her to gasp.

“How the hell am I supposed to do that?” She thought to herself, her skin aching as she stared with wide eyes.

She turned to Brian and looked.

His smile was still intact, and she thought it was annoying.

“I don’t know how…” She surrendered, returning her forlorn gaze to the Manager.

“I thought as much…” Charles snorted, returning his fierce gaze to Brian.

“Young man…” He cleared his throat, already beckoning the guards standing behind him.

“It seems that you are not welcome here. Clearly, you are a nobody. And a nobody has no business in this kind of event.” He looked to his right, and then to his left.

The moment Charles was certain that the guards were standing close enough, he nodded in satisfaction while his scowl was still intact.

“Turn around and walk away like you were never here, mister.” His eyes flashed with an intense warning, his veins lined up with contempt.

But Brian stood his ground, not looking like he was ready to make even a move.

Then he scoffed, staring back at the Manager.

“I am going nowhere.” He declared, his voice calm but absolute.

“Who is this idiot?!” A voice echoed softly, and some others followed from different angles.

“No one has ever said no to Mr. Sterling! He is definitely testing him!”

“This young man will wish he had left the moment Mr. Sterling walked into this place.”

Brian heard it all. He heard everything, yet he remained calm.

Brows were furrowed, eyes were wide as everyone kept staring in disbelief.

Even Pearl and Romeo were not left out of the shock, turning to exchange glances with each other.

“What did you just say?” Charles shattered the silence, but he couldn’t do the same to the rage that was simmering inside him.

He pushed forward, clenching his right fist on his way closer to Brian.

Two of his guards followed him, marching violently and ready to flex their muscles.

“You heard me…” Brian stood his ground, his voice still firm and direct.

“I may not be among the guests recognized in this event, but I definitely have the right to be so.”

“How so?” Charles scowled, impatience burning inside him.

“Tell me!” His anger was gradually taking over, his eyes still sparking with rage.

Brian took a deep breath, still calm and unflustered.

“You don’t need to ask me another question, Mr. Sterling. Just let me through, and you will be doing yourself a huge favor…”

“How dare you?!” Romeo didn’t even let him finish.

He blurted angrily, lifting his balled fists as though he was ready to throw a punch.

Brian turned to him and scoffed, nodding with a wry smile.

“Lower your hand, Romeo. You don’t want to get into trouble.”

Romeo gasped, and Pearl was not even left out.

“Don’t let him get away with this, Romeo!” Pearl urged, gnashing her teeth while she glared at her ex-husband.

“There is no way on earth I am letting that happen,” Romeo swore, then he shifted his gaze to Charles at once.

“Mr. Sterling? Instruct your men to throw this fellow out of this place. People are going to think you’re weak if you decide to do nothing about his insolence.”

His words got to Charles, and it appeared that he was already thinking in that direction.

He nodded, then he exhaled sharply before turning to the guard by his right.

“You are not just going to kick him out of this place. Could you break his bones? Beat him until he passes out, then you get me video and picture evidence."

“Yes, boss!” The guards echoed in unison, and then they advanced toward Brian, in a hurry to grab him.

Arya’s panic rose, her breath staggering inside her.

“You shouldn’t have spoken to him like that! Now see what you have caused!” She scolded Brian, her eyes giving him a stern stare.

“Allow me to take care of this, wifey.” Brian gave an unexpected response, turning to the guards who were barely a meter in front of him.

Even though his smile was assuring and confident, Arya’s fear still surged through her veins, her eyes turning to Charles as though she was about to plead with them.

“Hold on, boys,” Brian said to the guards, and surprisingly, they found themselves halting right in front of him.

Brian had a soft voice, yet his aura was palpable.

It was as though he was coated with sunlight, yet there was nothing to prove that he was extraordinary.

“Don’t be in a hurry, boys.” He held onto his wry smile, still staring at the men.

They turned to look at each other, frozen by the reaction of the man they had been sent to batter.

“What are you still waiting for?!” Romeo sparked before Charles could get the chance, marching closer with a glower.

“Didn’t you hear your boss?! Get this moron out of this place!” He pointed to Brian, his chest vibrating as though it was about to explode.

The guards nodding, adjusting their bodies as though they had just been set free from a compellance.

Then they stepped forward, reaching with both hands to grab Brian.

“Did your boss tell you that his time with Prime Tech is almost coming to an end?”

The guards halted, staring at Brian with wide eyes.

“Who…!” Charles swallowed hard, struggling with the cringe that swept through his nerves.

“Where did you get that information?!” He snarled as he approached Brian, his lids flickering as though they were trying to cover the nervousness glittering in his eyes.

Brian turned to him, his sinister smile still unwavering.

“You didn’t tell them, did you?”

“Is that how you go about spreading nonsense?!” Romeo spoke on behalf of Charles, his orbs still burning with intense disdain.

“Mr. Sterling is going to remain the Manager of Prime Tech for as long as possible…”

As he spoke, he shifted his gaze to Charles, and then he began to wonder why he was silent.

“Mr. Sterling? Tell him…” He pointed to Brian, urging with his eyes.

Sterling forced a smile, but it wasn’t confident, nor did it last.

“Am I lying?” Brian’s words reverberated inside his ears, even though it was barely above a whisper.

“Go ahead. Tell everyone the truth, or should I go ahead and tell them why you will no longer be the Manager of this place?”

  • Admiration Withdrawn

“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration. “That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain. She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes. It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly. Brian swallowed everything in good faith. After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself. No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars. “I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination

  • Greeenfield Co

Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.

  • Sharp Mouth

“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth. “Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.” “Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.” Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop. The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes. “Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.” “But…” “You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident

  • Uninvited

Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”

  • The Kirks

“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was

  • The Response

“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
