“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.

“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth.

“Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.”

“Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.

“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.”

Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop.

The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes.

“Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”

“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.

“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.”

“But…”

“You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident smile.

“I have to run now, Arya. I need to prepare to meet your family. Well, in a more conducive setting…”

Arya was dumbfounded, even when Brian moved closer to her and gave her a peck on both cheeks.

“See you later, Arya Kirk.”

Her heart melted at the mention of her name.

She wasn’t certain if it was Brian’s voice, or the soothing way he said it.

All she could do was trail him with his eyes, watching him disappear from the noisy hall.

“Who the hell did I marry?” She questioned, her voice low and cracked.

Meanwhile, it didn’t take so long for Brian to push through the crowd.

People were still taking pictures, and comments were still running about how satisfied or displeased individuals were about how things took a twist.

Brian continued moving, his vision on the road across the avenue.

“Isn’t that Arya Kirk’s supposed husband?!” Someone pointed out, causing everyone close by to turn at once.

Brian frowned, grunting in annoyance.

To escape the attention, he quickened his footsteps, but he had barely made it up to ten meters when a car pulled up in front of him.

The two doors in front opened at once, then two men stepped down, marching toward him vehemently.

One of them was Charles Sterling, the same Manager he had intimidated.

Charles was livid, and when he looked around and saw that the coast was clear, he increased his pace.

His two eyes were dark with rage, his fists clenched tightly.

The guard marching next to him shared his annoyance, glaring fiercely at Brian.

“You thought you were going to speak to me in that manner and just walk freely?!” Charles fired, covering the remaining space between him and Brian.

“Hello, Mr. Sterling. Have you come to make another fuss?” Brian was composed, no amount of panic inside him.

He took a deep breath, smirking at Charles who was already breathing fury.

“I see you have a sharp mouth, Brian Regal. You talk too much for a man who has lost everything in his name within a period of five years.”

Brian scoffed, nodding slowly.

“True. But I didn’t steal from the company I was working for. I didn’t scam people who trusted me with their money and information.”

Charles’s pupils went deep into their sockets, his clenched fists rising to his chest level.

“How dare you?! How dare you?!”

“What?” Brian scoffed again, looking at the two fists.

“Are you about to throw a punch? Does the truth hurt so badly that you feel your ego has been bruised?”

Charles found himself lowering his fists, but they were still clenched, showing signs that they had not accomplished their mission.

“How did you know all of this? Who told you about the situation in Prime Tech?”

Brian sniggered, mockery written on his face.

“It doesn’t matter, Charles Sterling. What matters is that you are going to be fired after the panel has had a meeting. You are going to kiss goodbye to that job that you strongly boast about. That position that has made you look down on others for years.”

Charles searched and searched, but he couldn’t think of anything to say.

He just stared, looking Brian in the eyes.

The guard standing next to him gave him signs, eager to attack Brian, but Charles knew better.

He knew not to fall for the trap that was right in front of him.

So he exhaled sharply, summoning the strength to speak.

“I am going to find out who you work for, Boy.” He swore, pointing Brian in the face.

“You are not going to get away with this. Trust me…”

“I hope so.” Brian gave a freezing response that made Charles’s expression to collapse even deeper.

His guard gasped, surprised that his boss had not asked him to attack even after he had spoken rudely to him severally.

“See you later, Charles Sterling. I hope you get a new job after this.” Brian walked away, sauntering toward the busy road.

Charles and his man watched him board a taxi, and he waved at them before he got in with a wry smile.

  • Admiration Withdrawn

“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration. “That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain. She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes. It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly. Brian swallowed everything in good faith. After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself. No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars. “I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination

  • Greeenfield Co

Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.

  • Uninvited

Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”

  • The Kirks

“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was

  • The Response

“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
