"The pool, Daniel! The pool!" Liam shrieked, his voice splitting as he bolted out the back sliding doors.

The rain had stopped, leaving the evening air biting and still. The massive Vane estate backyard stretched out under the grey twilight, shadowed by manicured hedges. Liam’s boots tore up patches of wet grass as he sprinted toward the iron-gated pool area. Daniel was a step behind him, his phone already clutched in his hand.

They burst through the broken gate. Liam skidded to a halt at the edge of the deep end, his chest heaving, his eyes frantically scanning the pristine blue water.

The surface was completely flat. Still.

"There's nobody here, Liam! Look, she’s not here!" Daniel panted, his eyes darting across the empty surface.

"No, no, no!" Liam screamed, dropping to his knees. He peered through the rippling, deceptive reflection of the stadium lights.

At the very bottom of the nine-foot deep end, a small splash of color caught the light. A yellow dress. Small, delicate arms spread wide, swaying gently with the artificial current of the pool filter.

"Lily!" Liam’s roar didn't sound human. It was the sound of a man’s soul tearing out of his throat.

Before Daniel could even grab his shoulder, Liam dove headfirst into the freezing water. The shock of the cold didn't register. The burning in his lungs didn't matter. He kicked downward with desperate, violent strokes until his hands broke through the current and wrapped around the tiny, fragile torso of his daughter. He pulled her against his chest and fought his way back to the surface.

He broke the water, gasping, and dragged her to the concrete edge.

Daniel was already there, dropping his phone onto the grass as he hauled Lily’s limp, soaked body onto the lawn.

"Get the ambulance now! Get them now!" Liam choked out, throwing himself over the edge, his body shivering violently as he scrambled to his daughter’s side.

"I'm calling! I'm calling right now!" Daniel's voice was shaking as he pressed the phone to his ear, screaming into the line.

"Emergency! I need an ambulance at the Vane Estate on Crestview Drive! A two-year-old child was just pulled from the bottom of a pool! She's not breathing! Hurry, damn it, hurry!"

Liam pressed his trembling hands flat against Lily’s small, icy chest. Her skin was blue. Her beautiful, round eyes were closed, and her tiny hands lay open at her sides.

"One, two, three, four," Liam counted out loud, his voice cracking violently into the empty yard as he pumped her chest. "Come on, baby. Come on, sweet angel. Wake up for daddy. Please, open your eyes. You asked for sunflowers, Lily. I bought them. They’re inside. Just breathe."

He tilted her head back, pinched her cold nose, and forced air into her lungs. He did it again. And again.

"Liam, let me take over! Your hands are shaking too much!" Daniel wept, kneeling beside him, tears streaming down his face as he watched his best friend desperately try to fight death.

"No! I'm her father! I have to do it!" Liam screamed back, his vision completely blurred by a flood of tears. "One, two, three... Lily, please! Don't do this to daddy! I promised I'd protect you! Open your eyes!"

"Brother, the paramedics are on their way! Keep doing compressions!" Daniel cried, wiping his face with a trembling sleeve, his eyes fixed on the tiny, unmoving yellow dress.

A shadow fell over them.

Liam looked up through his tears. Raymond and Gloria Vane had walked out onto the patio. They stood under the covered awning, completely dry, holding their porcelain tea cups. There was no horror on their faces. No sorrow. Gloria simply adjusted her pearl necklace, a cold, annoyed look in her eyes.

"Look at the absolute scene you are making in our backyard," Gloria called out, her voice smooth, composed, and utterly unbothered. "Screaming like an animal. You're going to wake up the neighbors, trash."

"She was in the pool!" Liam roared, his voice hoarse from crying as he kept pressing down on Lily's chest. "You locked her outside! You let her drown! Look at her! She’s not breathing!"

“Just pray nothing happens to her! I swore to God if anything happens to her, you will regret ever knowing me!

“Shut your dirty mouth you brat! What an audacity" Gloria roared.

Raymond took a slow sip of his tea, his small hard eyes completely dead. "We told you to take your bad-luck blood and leave, furniture. You left her unsupervised while you went out to scratch for pennies. This is your failure, not ours. Don't you dare try to pin your genetic trash's death on our property value."

"You demonic monsters!" Daniel screamed, standing up and pointing a furious, trembling finger at them. "She is a baby! She is your daughter's child! How can you stand there and say that while she's dying?!"

"Mind your tongue, peasant," Gloria sneered, stepping back toward the glass doors. "That brat ceased to be anything to this family the moment she was born with his cursed blood. If she's gone, it’s a blessing. Our Diana can finally have a clean slate without a defective anchor dragging her down."

"Get inside, Gloria," Raymond muttered, turning his back on the scene. "The sirens are going to attract the press. Let the trash handle his own garbage."

They walked back inside, sliding the glass doors shut and drawing the heavy velvet curtains, completely erasing the tragedy from their sight.

Liam didn't stop. He pressed, he breathed, he begged, until his arms burned and his chest felt like it was breaking. He refused to hear the silence of the yard. He refused to accept what his hands were telling him.

Within four minutes, the loud wail of sirens pierced the evening air. A red-and-white ambulance slammed to a halt in the driveway, its flashing lights cutting through the twilight. Two paramedics—a senior woman and a younger man carrying a heavy trauma kit—sprinted through the broken gate and dropped to their knees beside the pool.

"Let us work, sir! Step back!" the female paramedic ordered, gently but firmly pushing Liam’s wet hands away from Lily’s chest.

Liam stumbled backward into Daniel’s arms. Daniel held him tightly, both arms wrapped around Liam's chest, keeping him upright as Liam hyperventilated, his eyes locked onto the medical team.

The paramedics worked with frantic, professional speed. They checked her pulse. They checked her pupils with a small penlight. The younger man hooked up a portable monitor, checking for a rhythm. After three seconds, the machine emitted a flat, continuous, echoing beep.

The female paramedic stopped pumping. She looked at the monitor, then turned her head to share a heavy, dark look with her colleague. She slowly reached over and turned off the machine’s alarm.

The silence that followed was terrifying.

"No..." Liam whispered, shaking his head violently as he tried to break free from Daniel’s grip. "No, don't stop. Do it again. Check again! She just had surgery yesterday, her brain is tired, she’s just sleeping! Check her again, please!"

The female paramedic stood up slowly. She walked over to Liam, her eyes filled with a heavy, practiced sorrow. She placed a hand on his soaked, trembling arm.

"I am so sorry, sir," she said softly, her voice cracking slightly. "There’s nothing we can do. The water in her lungs... her body temperature... she passed away a significant amount of time before you found her. We have to call the coroner."

"No!" Liam screamed, a sound of absolute, unadulterated agony tearing from his chest. "Lily! Lily!"

His knees gave out entirely. He collapsed onto the wet grass, burying his face in his hands as his entire world shattered into pieces. Daniel dropped down with him, burying his face in Liam's shoulder, weeping openly as the flashing red lights of the ambulance illuminated the dark backyard.

The ceiling was white. That was the very first thing Liam registered—a flat, bleached white ceiling with a single fluorescent light strip running down its center. Then the smell hit him. It was a suffocating wave of strong antiseptic and clean industrial linen. He knew exactly where he was before he even fully managed to open his eyes.He tried to shift his weight on the mattress, and his fractured ribs immediately reminded him why that was a terrible idea."Ah..." Liam gasped, a sharp blade of pain ripping through his chest. He exhaled a ragged breath slowly, waiting for the worst of the blinding agony to pass. His left eye was swollen almost entirely shut, and his left shoulder felt as if someone had driven a rusted nail straight through the joint and left it there. He lay perfectly still, staring blankly up as his mind struggled to catch up to his broken body. The heavy scent of stale beer and cheap tobacco filled the dim air of the dive bar. Liam Cross sat in the darkest corner table, his bruised hands shaking as he clutched a glass of straight whiskey. He had nowhere left to go. Lily was no longer at the mortuary; her tiny body was resting beneath the cold dirt. He couldn't go to Daniel's house either—Daniel's parents were lifelong friends of the Vanes, and staying there would only force his brother into a brutal family conflict. He was completely alone. He needed to erase the world."Give me another one," Liam muttered, slamming the empty glass onto the sticky wooden table. The bartender didn't even look up from wiping the counter. "You got cash for another round, trash? I know who you are. You're that deadbeat the Vane family just kicked into the gutter. No credit here."Liam reached into his pocket and threw down a crumpled twenty-dollar bill—part of the money Daniel had desperately given him. "Keep pouring. Just make the room stop sp

  • A silent farewell

For five days, Liam Cross lived among the dead. He didn't have a single dollar left for a motel room, nor did he have the spirit to seek shelter. Instead, he curled up on the hard plastic chairs in the waiting room of the city mortuary, a ghost haunting the corridors where his daughter’s icy body was kept. Every few hours, he would stand outside the glass partition of the basement, his bloodshot eyes staring into the sterile dark. He didn't eat. He barely drank. Daniel had found him there on the third night, throwing a thick blanket over his shivering shoulders and forcing a hot cup of coffee into his numb hands. "Take this, Liam," Daniel had choked out, his voice cracking as he slipped a worn envelope stuffed with crumpled bills into Liam's jacket pocket. "It’s only eight hundred dollars. I cleared out my secondary checking account. It’s all I have left after the hospital loan, brother. Use it to find a proper burial plot for our sweet angel." Liam hadn't spoken. He had simply
