Logan moved closer to the bed, his footsteps muffled by the thick carpet of the Brooks master suite.

His father lay there, pale and unmoving, his breathing so faint that Logan almost had to lean over to see the rise and fall of his chest. The smell of antiseptic lingered heavily in the air, but beneath it, there was another scent—a bitter, metallic note he knew all too well.

Poison.

He placed two fingers gently on his father’s wrist, feeling the sluggish, uneven pulse. Then he pressed his palm lightly against his father’s chest, listening with the trained patience of someone who had treated him before.

His heart sank. The toxin levels in his father’s system weren’t just present—they were higher than before.

Much higher.

It wasn’t a mild contamination or a trace dose—it was deliberate, heavy, and meant to kill quickly. If something wasn’t done immediately, Logan estimated his father had only hours, maybe less, before his body shut down completely.

A troubled heaviness settled in Logan’

The moment the man raised the gun and pointed it directly at Charlotte, time seemed to fracture.Charlotte’s breath caught in her throat. Her mind screamed for her body to move, to run, to do something—anything—but fear rooted her to the spot. The cold, dark opening of the gun barrel felt like it was swallowing the air in the room.Logan saw it.In that instant, every trace of restraint vanished. Before the man could pull the trigger, Logan surged forward with explosive speed. His movement was so fast it blurred—one sharp twist of his body, a precise strike to the man’s wrist, and the gun flew free. Logan caught it mid-motion, spun once, and without hesitation fired. The sound was deafening. The man dropped instantly, his body crumpling to the floor in lifeless stillness.Charlotte screamed, clapping her hands over her mouth. Her knees weakened, and she staggered back, barely staying upright as shock flooded her system. She stared at the fallen man, her heart pounding violently in her

The men exchanged quick, uncertain glances when Logan calmly told them to do whatever they wanted. They had expected something else entirely—fear, maybe desperation. Pleading, panic, bargaining. Most people faced with armed men in a locked room showed it in their eyes within seconds. Their breathing changed. Their voices cracked. Their bodies shrank.Logan did none of that. His tone had been steady, almost detached, as if the danger standing in front of him was nothing more than an inconvenience. That calm confidence unsettled them far more than shouting ever could.“Did you hear that?” one of them muttered under his breath, shifting his stance. “This guy’s got nerves.”“Don’t let it get to you,” the leader snapped, though his jaw tightened. “He’s bluffing.”Even as he spoke, doubt crept in. It hung in the air, subtle but unmistakable. Logan’s audacity had planted it, and doubt was dangerous in moments like this—especially for men who relied on intimidation to stay in control.Charlot

The master bedroom of Logan and Charlotte’s home was warm and quiet, lit only by the faint glow of the moon slipping through a narrow gap in the curtains. Charlotte slept curled against Logan’s side, her body finally surrendering to exhaustion after days of emotional strain. Grief had drained her. Fear had hollowed her out. Sleep had come only after relentless effort, and even then, it had claimed her gently.Logan lay on his back, one arm instinctively around her. His breathing was slow, controlled—but his mind never fully shut down. Years of surviving threats had trained him to rest without relaxing completely. Even in sleep, his senses stayed alert, tuned to the slightest change in the air.Outside, movement broke the stillness.Three figures emerged from the shadows near the fence line, their forms barely distinguishable against the darkness. They wore dark clothing that absorbed the night, their faces obscured beneath caps pulled low. Each man moved with purpose, their actio

The line connected almost immediately.“Yes?” came the calm, gravelly voice on the other end.Barbara did not bother with pleasantries. “Do not forget our plan,” she said sharply. “In fact, it has become far more urgent.”There was a brief pause. “Go on.”“Logan and Charlotte have found out,” Barbara continued, her voice lowering. “They are aware that there has been a plot against them. If this situation is allowed to linger, it will boomerang and expose everyone involved.”Another pause, longer this time.“So,” the man said slowly, “you want this concluded immediately.”“Before nightfall,” Barbara replied firmly. “I want them gone before the sun sets.”The man exhaled softly, almost amused. “You should have said so from the beginning. When I take a job, Barbara Sullivan, I finish it.”Barbara’s lips curved into a faint, satisfied smile. “That is exactly why I called you.”“Consider it done,” the man said. “Logan and Charlotte will soon become history.”Barbara felt a strange sense of

Selena’s death sat heavily in the air, like a dark cloud that refused to lift. The flashing lights of police vehicles had long disappeared from the street outside, and the distant echo of sirens had faded into nothingness. The living room felt smaller than it ever had before.Charlotte sat on the edge of the couch, her shoulders hunched inward as if she were trying to fold herself into nothing. Her eyes were swollen and red, her lashes clumped together with tears that refused to stop falling. A folded handkerchief trembled in her fingers, already damp and useless, but she held onto it anyway, as though letting go might cause her to shatter completely. Every few seconds, her chest hitched, sharp breaths breaking through her lips as another wave of grief surged through her.Logan stood a few steps away, motionless. His posture was rigid, his arms hanging stiffly at his sides, with his jaw clenched so tightly it throbbed with pain. He had faced danger before and had even stared vi
