8. Keep Lying

"Is it true that Laura was in the hotel room with Tom Harold? Isn't he the sole heir of the Harold family that controls the hospitality industry?" asked one of the guests.

Laura Huxley and Tom Harold are very compatible. Tom Harold is a well-established young man and comes from a well-to-do family; if they're together, then it's only right."

"True, Tom Harold is far more worthy than a son-in-law living in his in-laws' house, after all." Another guest chimed in.

Hearing these words, Laura looked down in shame, her cheeks flushed. This time, it wasn't because she was fascinated or imagining herself with Tom Harold, but because of the support from the guests. At least she wasn't seen as the one causing trouble.

The guests had little to say about Tom Harold. They congratulated and wished Laura a speedy union with the Harold family heir.

Laura now raised her head slowly. After all, she had to look like the victim, and Danny was the guilty party. An ungrateful man.

"Everyone, please don't misunderstand my relationship with Tom Harold. I did meet him at the hotel, but what we did was not what Danny said. I met him to talk about a business project. The Huxley Group currently needs investors for a smart city project, so I invited Tom to meet," Laura tried to explain.

The oldest woman in the Huxley family turned to Laura and Danny. Danny, meanwhile, glanced at Laura and began to mutter sneeringly, "What kind of business talk is it to wear a super skimpy dress in a hotel room. Can't business talk be done in a conference room, restaurant, or maybe just in the lobby?"

Laura's eyes immediately bulged at Danny. Suddenly, the door opened, and a well-dressed young man in an Armani suit came in carrying a purple box.

"I'm sorry I'm late because I have some business to take care of," said the young man.

Then, all the invitees around the Huxley family immediately turned to the young man, who was none other than Tom Harold. Their gazes looked so serious at Tom that he was taken aback. Could it be that he looked so attractive and classy?

Laura walked quickly to Tom, grabbed his arm, and pointed at Danny, now looking at her. "Tom, you're just in time. Do you know what that loser said? He spread untrue rumors about us. He said that the two of us had an affair in the hotel room. You'd better explain to everyone what really happened!"

Tom was silent for a while, and then he realized that the stares at him were not because of his appearance. The parasite's son-in-law must be spreading rumors about him and Laura right now, even though he wanted to sleep with Laura, the most beautiful woman in the Northern Coastal.

But Tom was not allowed to show that. Like most upper-class people in the Northern Coastal, when they were guilty, they would not admit it but cover it up and make those of the lower class guilty.

Moreover, to this day, most people judge from the outside. Danny's flashy and classy appearance contrasted with his, who only wore torn jeans and a faded T-shirt. Of course, people would listen to Danny more than the useless son-in-law.

He squinted at Danny, 'He's just a son-in-law living in his wife's house. How dare he thwart my business with Laura?'

Tom then turned to Grandma and smiled, then he looked at the guests and cleared his throat. "Don't believe what this parasitic son-in-law says! Laura came to me yesterday to give me an investment proposal for the Smart City project. I asked her to talk in the room because I was staying there, and business talks couldn't be done in a crowded place. I would have asked Laura to speak there if the boardroom hadn't been rented out. Besides, the room I rented was the president suite, which has a living room, and we talked there."

After Tom said this, people started nodding and confirming his words, which made him look big-headed. The young man smoothed his collar, turned to Danny, and asked questions: "Danny, you insist on accusing Laura of having an affair with me. Do you have any proof of that? Do you know what the law is if you spread nasty rumors?"

"That's right! If you want to accuse someone, you must have proof! You can pay a fine of up to hundreds of thousands of dollars for spreading bad rumors about someone. But given your background, it doesn't look like you'll be able to afford the fine; you'll probably end up in jail for three years!" Matthew exclaimed as he glanced at Tom.

Tom was sure that Danny couldn't possibly have any evidence of what he had done with Laura. When the useless son-in-law delivered the order to his room, he was so emotional that he didn't take any pictures or videos with the cell phone that was in his hand.

In addition, Harold's family owned the hotel where he met Laura. This gave him an advantage, as he could easily ask the staff to delete the CCTV footage showing Laura coming to his room.

'Damn it, why didn't I think of taking a picture of them yesterday?' Danny asked himself while clenching his fists.

Laura grabbed Grandma's arm and said, "Grandma, you heard what Tom said yourself. Will you listen to Danny's slanderous words?"

Grandmother looked back at Laura momentarily, then looked at the guests and said, raising her head. "I certainly believe what my granddaughter says. I've known Laura for over 20 years, and the Huxley family raised her well. This parasite's son-in-law has an obscure family background; I've only known him for three years. Plus, he can't prove what he says, so what's the point of trusting him?"

Danny wasn't surprised by this at all. The Huxleys wouldn't listen to him; he was just trash to them.

Tom cleared his throat and broke the silence. "Danny deliberately spreads these rumors because he has a grudge against me."

"What? This loser dares to hold a grudge against you?" Anthony asked, pointing at Danny.
