Chapter 2.

It had been a long day for Mark as he walked on the quiet streets. He had combed through every financial firm he could think of but he was being declined.

"Fuck!" He cussed as he was too frustrated to think. He had a very good resumé but he still wasn't considered.

Mark was starting to think it wasn't something coincidental.

He halted and then turned to look around for a cab but he could see no cab in sight. It wasn't so easy to get a cab in high residential areas.

He then continued to walk and just then a car passed beside him, at a high speed. The speed and closeness of the car caught him off guard and he was almost thrown out of the road.

"What the fuck!" He cussed angrily. He was already frustrated and now someone was trying to kill him.

After recovering his balance, Mark noticed the car reversed.

"What else do they want?" Mark said to herself as the car stopped beside him.

It was a luxury car and it looked incredibly familiar to him but then he wished it wasn't what he was thinking.

True to his thinking, the back car door opened up and his mother-in-law came into view.

Mark sighed due to what was about to come.

"Hey, look who we have here." Mark's mother-in-law, Elizabeth, greeted mockingly and her husband, who was also in the car, snorted.

"Good day, madam." Mark greeted back, his lips forming into a sneer as he looked back at her.

"What insolence! You should keep your thoughts and expressions at bay, you freaking poor boy." Elizabeth yelled but Mark didn't flinch one bit.

He had heard enough insults in his life from her and he wasn't fazed by them anymore.

"How could you know whether I'm poor or not when you have not evaluated the state of your mind, huh?" Mark said in an overly respectful tone but his words spoke volumes.

"You brat!" His father-in-law, Rodrigo, who had been snorting in the car called out.

In one minute, the couple was out of the car, standing before Mark.

"Do you mean my wife's state of mind is poor? So, therefore, she is poor?" Rodrigo shouted at Mark, not caring if anyone would see him.

Anyway, the street was deserted, so he didn't think anything would harm him.

"I didn't say that, father-in-law. You chose to interpret it that way." Mark said, shrugging. Also, he knew that the old couple before him hated it whenever he addressed them as his in-laws.

Elizabeth was about to refute his words but Mark cut her off, "You can't blame me for interpreting my words that way. It's just the way your mind works." Mark threw another subtle insult at Elizabeth.

"Do you think because you're married to my daughter you can run your mouth just anyhow?" Elizabeth screamed.

"You're just too low for Michelle." She concluded and Mark snorted rudely.

"You don't get to determine that, old lady. If you pay attention to things that matter, perhaps, you just might feel and look better." Mark said and then turned to walk away.

He left Elizabeth fuming and he didn't care. To others, he would come off as rude but then he didn't care.

His in-laws despised him and it was no new thing to anyone. He didn't just know them for a few years, they had been his adopted parents.

Yes! He was adopted by a seemingly wealthy family and he was despised. He fell in love with Michelle and had to marry her against her family's wishes.

"You brat! Get back here. You're such an ungrateful twat." Elizabeth continued to shout at the top of her voice. She didn't even care about her social image.

Seeing that Mark wasn't responding to her, Elizabeth dragged her husband into the car. The car engine started and then it zoomed past Mark.

He could guess that his in-laws were on their way to see Michelle, at their house.

However, Mark didn't care to reply to her. He continued to walk forward.

The talk he had with Michelle in their bedroom made him laugh out loud.

He had already asked Elizabeth for a job and he was greatly ridiculed.

That day he walked into her office and asked her politely and pleadingly.

Elizabeth's mocking laughter rang in Mark's head for a long time.

And right then, he recalled what she had said to him.

"How bold of you to come in here. However, we don't employ low lives." Those were Elizabeth's words.

At that time, Mark was still thinking that she would at least accept him. Also, he used to take every one of her insults but he had enough.

Mark had been walking for a long ass time and he came to stand before his house.

"Ahhh…" He sighed and then walked in. As he walked toward his front porch, he spotted the car from earlier and he sighed.

He wasn't ready for any talks and insults but then he couldn't avoid them. Added to that, he wouldn't let his wife face her parents alone. He was aware they were putting too much pressure on her.

As soon as Mark got into the living hall, he spotted the old couple sitting on the couch. His face flared in anger because of the way they looked at him and his home.

Also, Michelle was standing before them, her head hung low. At this sight, Mark's anger skyrocketed and he walked to stand before his wife.

"What is going on here?" Mark asked, shielding his wife from her parents' gazes.

They thought that it was below standard but it still cost a lot for Mark to maintain.

"Oh, you're here," Elizabeth said immediately and then stood up.

"You both need to get a divorce." Elizabeth declared. The hatred she had for Mark wasn't concealed and she didn't care.

"Do you think you can enforce that on us?" Mark asked in a nonchalant tone, surprising Elizabeth.

She expected him to refute his words with so much aggression but he was surprisingly calm about it.

"Is he up to something?" She asked herself while glancing at Mark and Michelle.

On the other hand, Mark wasn't pleased with the way Michelle was so calm about their so-called divorce.

"Did she accept anything?" He asked himself but he was quick to shake that thought off.

Michelle loved him dearly and he didn't think she would accept their divorce.

"Well, Michelle has agreed to a divorce!" Elizabeth declared with a sinister smile on her face. She wanted to see him lose his cool.

Fear gripped Mark's heart at Elizabeth's words. However, Mark simply turned to look at Michelle, and then she shook her head frantically.

Her eyes were on Elizabeth who still had a sinister smile on her face.

Michelle's face showed fear and Mark was starting to think something was going on.

On the other hand, Michelle still couldn't form any words to refute Elizabeth.

"Did you?" Mark asked while still looking at Michelle.

"No, I did not." She said finally and Mark's heart became settled.

"You have nothing on us, old lady," Mark said and then took hold of Michelle's hand. He started to drag her away from the living hall.

However, he halted at Elizabeth's words.

"She doesn't have a say whether you both are going to get divorced or not. She is getting married soon and you are getting out of the way."

"We don't need a scrawny and poor boy as our son-in-law. We can't even show you off to our business partners."

Elizabeth's voice echoed in the living hall but she didn't stop.

She continued to say, "You have no connections to show off. You have no way of growing the business and you dared to ask for a job. What insolence!"

At Elizabeth's words, Michelle's head turned to look at Mark.

Her eyes widened as she realized that he had gone to her mother for a job even before she had told him to.

Just by looking at Mark, she could see that he was incredibly angry. His hand tightened into a fist. But surprisingly, he still held her hand gently with his other hand.

His mouth opened up and he started to spew words, "You need to grow the company so much and you claim that I cannot do anything useful. Well, do it yourself if you are so capable. Bunch of incompetent people!"

Immediately after Mark finished his words, he dragged Michelle toward their bedroom, leaving his in-laws behind.

Everyone was dumbfounded by his words.

Immediately they got into the bedroom, he let go of Michelle's hand, and then his phone rang out.

Taking out his phone, Mark saw that it was an unknown number and he declined it.
