Chapter 2: The Useless Heir Returns
last update2026-04-22 03:05:04

Very early in the morning, a flashy blue car was speeding along the expressway of New York City. Inside the car, Lucifer sat quietly in the back seat while James drove him.

"James," Lucifer called.

"Yes, boss."

"Just as usual, keep up the act and observe carefully."

"Alright, boss," James said.

Thirty minutes later, the car finally arrived in front of a beautiful white towering mansion. The gate was wide open, and the entrance was decorated with flowers.

The car slowly drove into the villa and finally came to a stop in front of the mansion. Lucifer was watching through the glass panel. He could see a lot of high-profile businessmen and women, dressed in black, standing around. His gaze soon landed on his father's casket in the garden, and his eyes dilated. He stared at his father's photo placed beside the casket, and his expression became elusive.

As the car remained there for a while and no one came out, people began to grow suspicious. Soon, a security guard walked up to the car and knocked on the driver's window.

"Hello... you're not allowed to park here," the man said. But after waiting for a while, he got no response. He then noticed a movement in the back seat. He moved closer to the back window and peered through the glass, after all, it was darkly tinted.

Just as he finally saw a figure inside the car, the back door suddenly opened and slammed into the security guard's face. The man stumbled backward but managed to steady himself before he could fall.

The security guard quickly pulled out the handgun hanging on his waist and pointed it straight at the car, ready to deal with the imposter.

Noticing the situation, people began to panic and flee back toward the mansion, while other security guards immediately sprang into action to protect the people around.

"If you came here to make trouble, just know that you came to the wrong place and at the wrong time," an angry voice rang out in the open space. Lucifer's brows tightened as he recognized his uncle's voice, but still, he didn't make a move.

The atmosphere was filled with tension, and people slowly began to retreat. Everyone had their gaze fixed on the car, as if trying to figure out a puzzle. After waiting for a minute, there was still no response, and the person inside didn't show up.

Some peered through the slightly opened door of the car, but they still couldn't recognize the figure with the little detail they could catch from their angle.

"As you can see, I'm really in a bad mood today, so my patience is limited. I'm giving you five seconds to come out and explain yourself, or I will make sure you rot in jail," Lucifer's uncle spoke from the balcony again.

By now, the car was already surrounded by security guards, with their guns pointed straight at the car. Their fingers hovering dangerously close to the trigger. Not a single one of them dared to blink; their focus was locked on the car, observing every slightest movement from within the vehicle.

Just as the clock began to tick, people became worried and their hearts raced with fear. The whispers suddenly died down and the place became dead silence.

Inside the car, Lucifer raised his five fingers and began to count.

"1..."

"2..."

Lucifer turned his head and stared at his uncle through the glass window.

"3..."

"4..."

The security guards adjusted their stance, bracing themselves for what was about to come.

"5."

"Take him down!..." Lucifer's uncle commanded.

The security guards took a step forward towards the car to deal with the intruder. But, before they could get any closer, the half-opened door suddenly swung wide open, and a drunk young man, holding his coat in his left hand and alcohol in his right, stumbled out of the car with a weird smile on his face.

"You—Young ma—Master!" the security man pointing his gun at him stuttered in shock. His expression turned pale as realization hit him and he quickly brought the gun down.

"Lucifer!?" his uncle's surprised voice came from the balcony again. Without wasting time, his uncle quickly descended the stairs. Everyone was surprised and whispers spread across the crowd.

"So this is Lucifer, the useless son?" a man standing by the side asked curiously.

"Yes, I have heard of him, but never knew the rumors were true," another said, lowering his voice slightly.

"Can't believe he came drunk to his own father's funeral. What a waste," another disappointed voice chimed in.

Hearing the whispers, Lucifer smirked and pretended like he didn't understand anything.

"Sorry for that earlier. I was just carried away." Lucifer casually apologized to the people around. He tugged at his sleeve, his index finger quietly tapping on the screen of the black wristwatch on his hand.

At the same time, his gaze shifted—past the crowd, toward his father's casket.

Just then, the CCTV camera in front of the mansion slowly turned, its lens settling on the people gathered around his father's coffin.

Lucifer’s eyes lingered there for a brief second... before he looked away like nothing had happened.

Soon, the car drove off toward the parking lot.

"What are you doing here?" a familiar voice said. Lucifer raised his head and saw his younger stepbrother, Jackson, standing in front of him.

"Of course, I came to say my final goodbye to Dad," Lucifer said.

"You shouldn't have come here, because you will only end up disgracing our family," Jackson said and walked away without giving him any chance to respond.

Lucifer shrugged and looked around. His gaze landed on a beautiful young lady dressed in a blue dress, standing among the crowd.

He smiled and walked up to her.

"Hello, pretty. What's your name?" he said, wrapping his arm around her waist with a flirtatious smile on his face and pulled her closer.

For a brief second, their bodies were close enough to block the view of others.

The young woman secretly slid a USB drive into his palm, hidden perfectly under the cover of her arm. Lucifer took it and skillfully slid it into his pocket.

"You pervert! Let go of me," the woman suddenly yelled and slapped him across the face.

The sharp sound drew attention instantly.

Lucifer staggered backward and smiled, as if he wasn't the one who was slapped.

"Uhh... a fierce one? I like that," he grinned sheepishly.

His uncle soon arrived and apologized to the lady. "I'm sorry, Miss." Then he turned to Lucifer. "Lucifer, behave yourself."

"I'm sorry, Uncle Martin, I will go mind my business now." Lucifer winked at the lady and walked away. Some people who saw what happened spat in disgust, while others just shook their heads in disappointment.

"Lucifer!"

Just as Lucifer was heading into the mansion, he heard someone call him. He turned and saw Butler Roman, dressed in a simple black suit, just like everyone else.

"Mr. Roman, I was just looking for you. Come here and introduce me to my father's business partners, I would love to meet them," Lucifer said, throwing his arm over Roman's shoulder and pulling him along even before Roman could agree to his request. Roman was left with no other choice but to go with him.

Roman led him to three men standing around a table and introduced him to them.

"Hello, Mr. Harrington," Roman greeted the first man with a gray beard.

"Roman," Mr. Harrington replied.

"Lucifer, this is Mr. Harrington, the chairman of Marcellis Motors. This is Lucifer, the son of Mr. Whitlock," Roman said.

"Mr. Harrington, you're welcome, and nice to meet you." Lucifer stretched out his hand for a handshake. Mr. Harrington gave him a strange look, before taking his hand.

Lucifer took a sip from the bottle in his hand without a care, even before the handshake fully ended.

Mr. Harrington shook his head and laughed. "Hahaha... I have heard a lot about you, Lucifer, and honestly, I never knew the rumors were indeed true."

"Oh... so you came to confirm the rumors? I'm glad you're not disappointed," Lucifer said with an evil smile. Mr. Harrington stared at him with a slight grin on his face.

"Hahaha," Roman let out an awkward laugh, trying to ease the tension building up between the two.

"Come on, Lucifer." Roman directed him toward the other two men.

"This is Mr. Sterling, the chairman of Nexo Group, and this is Mr. Kingston, the CEO of Lumaris Engines. They are your father's associates," Roman said politely.

"I'm Lucifer. Nice meeting you all." Lucifer shook their hands before leaving with Roman to meet others.

"He is indeed a fool," Mr. Harrington said.

"I already told you, you shouldn't worry about him. He's not a threat to us. Just look at him. He can't even handle himself, let alone his father's company," Mr. Sterling laughed.

"Pathetic. His father was indeed a formidable force in the industry. This is my first time seeing a lion give birth to a snake," Mr. Kingston spat on the ground and shook his head.

"Attention, everyone!" a drunk voice suddenly rang out. Everyone turned toward the source and saw Lucifer sitting on his father's coffin. Their eyes widened in shock.

"I want to thank everyone who made it here today. Thanks for coming. Drink up! And enjoy your stay. Cheers!" He raised the bottle to everyone.

"So, if you all don't mind, I would like to see my father one last time before he is buried," Lucifer said as he stood up. He slowly moved his hand and grabbed the edge of the coffin.

Hearing that and seeing Lucifer about to open the coffin, people gasped in shock. Some looked away as whispers spread across the place.

"Don't do that, Lucifer!" his uncle shouted in panic and dashed toward him with all his might.

As he approached the table, James walked in with a chair and positioned it behind him. Lucifer quietly sat down in front of everyone without batting an eye and calmly crossed his legs. "Lucifer, we have been waiting for you, and you're meant to be at the chairman's seat," Martin said. "I thought we are here to choose the new chairman? So why should I take the seat while I haven't been confirmed as one?" Lucifer said calmly as he observed everyone. He noticed his stepbrother staring at him with hatred in his eyes.
