Unveiling a betrayal

The street lights lits up the cold winter street, Logan rushed home excitedly with a bouquet held tightly in his hand.

Despite the cold, he was filled with warmth and happiness and couldn't wait to get home and deliver the news to his wife.

He had just been invited by his boss to the company's annual dinner party, and was told he could bring a plus one.

Coincidentally, it was the night of his anniversary and he thought for once, he could take his wife somewhere exciting and with luck, get intimate with her at the end of their night.

However, as he entered their home, removing his gloves and hanging them by the coat rail, he stepped into the living room and saw his mother-in-law and brother-in-law already waiting.

Logan sighed on seeing them, his in-laws hated him and always found new ways to make his life more miserable,

"Good evening mother-in-...", he couldn't complete his words when a punch landed on his face.

"You scumbag" his brother-in-law Eric said, sneering at him and walked back to the couch,

Logan fell to the ground and after a while managed to stand up, perplexed.

He stared at his mother-in-law quizzically, who quickly threw a brown paper bag in front of him.

"Open it," she said sternly, creasing her brows

Confused over what was happening, Logan moved forward, grabbed the paper bag and pulled out the stack of files and photographs

"Sign it" she commanded. Logan’s eyes widened in shock as he read through the contents of the document.

"Sign it and divorce my daughter now, you worthless piece of shit!" Janet, his mother-in-law sneered, and walked towards him with a cold gaze.

"How can you even call yourself a man?”

“I'm so glad my daughter is finally done with a low-life piece of shit like you" she mocked and then laughed,

"It's almost funny that if anyone were told, they wouldn't believe that such a pathetic loser like you would have the mind to cheat on my daughter", she sneered

'Cheat?' The word reverberated in Dennis's mind.

'What is she talking about?' He pondered as he flipped the documents, and then saw pictures of himself walking into a hotel room with another woman.

"You think you are so slick. Sneaking around behind my daughter's back and putting our family name to shame. But not today you worthless scum. Today this all ends" she said sternly, furrowing her brows furiously at him

Logan remained unmoved with his eyes glued to the pictures in disbelief. None of this made sense.

"I didn't do it," he said softly

"I could never cheat on Mel or even imagine it"

At this point, his brother-in-law Eric stood up and stormed towards him,

"You will sign your signature or else!" He threatened

"I didn't cheat on Mel. This is just a big misunderstanding" Logan tried to explain himself and immediately a hot slap landed on his cheeks

"Do my ears deceive me, or does this useless scum think we are asking", his mother-in-law said enraged, looking at him scornfully

"Do I need to remind you of your place?" She sneered at him,

"You are nothing! A mere piece of trash that we've been enduring for three years. Without us, you'd have nothing, if not lying dead in the street among the trash that you are.",

"My daughter is a beautiful, classy girl with potential. She deserves a better life filled with wealth, status and respect. You can never give her any of that. Do you know why Logan?" She said angrily

"Because you are not a man. You are filth, a parasite that has been leeching off of us for the past three years. You can't even take care of your wife. You’re just as useless at your 'so-called' job as you are in this marriage, if I can even call it that.",

"And now you dare to cheat on my daughter! Just how shameless are you?!" Janet raged

"You've caused a stench to our family name for the last time, so don't make me repeat myself, sign the papers!!" She thundered

Logan stood quietly for a while reflectively, before replying,

"I'm only going to sign this if this is what Mel wants, only if she agrees to it", he sneered

"Well, you're in luck, look at the bottom of the paper," Eric said with a mocking smile

"Mel's already signed it" he added, reveling in the shocked expression on Logan's face

It all felt like a nightmare. Seeing his wife's signature, Logan knew very well it wasn't forged, this was truly Mel's handwriting.

Still, he was doubtful. He believed that his wife could've easily been forced to sign these documents, just as he was being framed for cheating on her.

There was only one way to find out the truth and know for sure.

"Where is she?" Logan asked, struggling to maintain his composure.

Janet scoffed and laughed mockingly

"You are so dumb, aren't you?", "Just cause you two were married, you think that she'll be waiting home for you like a lowly wife?", "If you want to know where she is, why don't you call her and find out?", she said egging him on

Logan felt some mischievousness in her voice, but waived it off, brought out his phone and quickly dialed Mel's number. The phone rang for a while before she finally picked up.

"Mel…" Logan said in a trembling voice. However, there was no response from her.

"Mel, I know you're there. Say something. Is it true?" Logan asked, his voice breaking

A few moments passed before she finally responded weakly

"Yes"

"Why?", Logan asked, struggling to make sense of the whole situation

"Can we talk about this?",

"No, Logan. We can't, I'm sorry", "This is exactly why I asked my mother to get this done, cause I didn't want to be the one to break your heart", "I'm sorry, my decision is final" she said coldly

'Didn't want to break my heart?' Logan questioned within himself.

'How could she say that when she had already broken it by asking for a divorce?' He pondered and just then, his thoughts were interrupted by the voice of a man in the background

"Come back to bed baby" the voice said.

Immediately, Logan slumped to the ground. He knew that voice too well. It was the same voice that told him to visit that hotel and discuss an increase in salary with the financial advisor of the company.

It was the same voice that told him to bring his wife along as a plus one for the company's annual dinner party.

Everything now made sense, why he was being framed, why his wife was seeking a divorce now. His boss was sleeping with his wife.
