Matt was sitting, watching the northern lights.

Night had fallen a while ago, and he was roasting a deer a la estaca over a pit. Today was his birthday, and he was celebrating it just like he had with Matskim two years ago.

Matt was smiling.

Though it was a little nostalgic, he was still happy, because starting tomorrow he would finally leave this cave where he had been through so much.

Even though it was a damn cave, it was his home, and he was grateful for it.

Today was a special day, sin

She spent some time washing, scrubbing off the grime that had built up on her body after five days without bathing. She listened to the hot water falling on her skin…She opened her eyes with an icy calm. They didn't look like the eyes of a victim, the eyes of prey, no…With a sigh, her eyes turned fragile, so fragile it seemed she would cry if anyone so much as spoke to her.She came out of the bathroom in a towel. A woman was waiting for her, sitting down, with neatly folded clothes."Put this on," the woman ordered."What is this?" she asked."Apparently, the colonel has some weird fetishes."The woman handed her what looked like a blue yukata. She took the Japanese garment and carefully got dressed. She spent some time getting ready. That woman had helped her a lot. She was so good at what she did that she seemed very used to it."Whatever he does, accept it. It's better if you accept it. That way you won't suffer…"The woman let her words fade away. She seemed like a woman who ha

Bang. The bullets flew past, but they were irrelevant with so many people around.Matskim slashed horizontally with his sword, beheading four people. But at that moment, five Awakened lunged at him.Matskim dodged the first and stopped him with a knee to the chin. Matskim lowered the man to the floor, careful not to alert the others. He looked at the two men lying dead. Although he didn't like that they had died without suffering, and they certainly deserved to suffer before dying… Matskim grabbed the older man's keys and walked toward the door they had come out of. It was still ajar, so he slipped inside slowly. He moved down a hallway lit by poorly placed lamps. "…" In the distance, Matskim could hear some people talking. He gripped his knife tightly and began to approach the room. Inside was a faded white van, backed up for unloading. Two men were unloading bags of about five kilos each. "Tomorrow I'm having dinner with my family," one said. "That's good… Working here sucks, but at least it's made me reaffirm my place in my family." "You know… who'd have thought a junkie could get philosophical?" the other mocked. "But you're right. Even though my motto is 'don't ask, don't question,' sometimes I wonder…" He couldn't finish the sen

Matskim looked at the corpse and sighed to himself. Then he checked that no one was nearby and, with his hands, bent the bars of the cell and managed to escape. The place was gloomy, dark, and damp. The smell of mold was so strong that it took him a few seconds to get used to both the darkness and the stench. Then he began to walk, looking into the other cells. In one of them, he saw a woman tied to the wall. She was dead. In another, he found a man cut up and mutilated all over, like some macabre organ donor. That was when Matskim couldn't take it anymore and followed the sound of muffled crying. Step… Step… He moved slowly down the hallway until he found a cell set apart from the others. There was a woman hanging by her wrists from chains. She was completely naked and, from what he could see, she had been brutally abused. Her wrists were bloody, and she convulsed every now and then. Matskim suspected she barely had two days left to live. He approached slowly. "I'm sorry

  • Human Cruelty

A few hours passed before the pickup truck left. Matskim had followed it with the help of a tracker and was now standing in front of what looked like a clinic. He kept watching for a while. Then he went to eat at a nearby café. He wanted to go unnoticed, so he pretended to be an ordinary man. He finished his dinner and quickly left to look for a motel… In the morning, he went back to the clinic. He climbed onto the roof of a house and began to watch. Throughout the day, he saw quite a few people go in. At first glance, everything seemed normal. However, the pickup truck had already left. Matskim didn't care. He wanted to find out what was going on there. He kept watching for a while and noticed that several of the people who had gone in never came out. Something was definitely going on. That night, he would go back to the motel to sleep. The next day, he would go in… He was drinking from his flask while looking at his thigh. He took a sip and grabbed a knife. He sighed for a

  • Why Am I a Master?

(Matskim's POV — 2018) The old man was packing his things. He had spent about four months fulfilling his service and, at last, he had time to deal with what he had left unfinished. And that was exactly what he was going to do. He got all his things ready, not forgetting the alcohol, which he would need. During those months, he had also ordered new clothes for a certain troublesome brat. He had left him a suitcase full of new clothes and even his coat, which had symbolic value to him. With everything ready, he was satisfied. He looked over the storeroom and nodded. Then he locked the door and walked slowly through the hallways. Today was his last day there, so he had to say goodbye to his old friend. He walked into the office. The man inside was going over some documents while calmly smoking. The old man sat down in the chair across from the desk and took a bottle out of his pocket. "It's time…" The man on the other side of the desk took the flask and drank a swig. "I can't s
