The firewood crackled with dry snaps, sending sparks dissolving into the dimness of the cave. The heat of the fire struck Matt’s face, but inside, he was still frozen.
He was sixteen years old, his hands covered in soot, Svetlana’s dried blood stuck to the sleeve of his tattered coat. He gripped the chipped kitchen knife with both hands. He thrust it directly into the embers until the blade glowed red-hot, then pulled it out and plunged it violently into the frozen mud on the cave floor. Sssshhhh. Steam blasted his face. Matt trembled. It was a violent, uncontrollable tremor that shook his shoulders and made his teeth chatter. Thick tears washed trails through the grime on his cheeks, but no sob escaped his throat. Instead, a muffled laugh emerged. Broken. Hysterical. Deranged. It bounced off the stone walls. “Heh… hahaha… heh…” “I’ll kill you…” he whispered against the steaming blade. His voice no longer sounded like that of a child. It was a hollow rasp. “I’ll kill you, Valentin… I’ll kill you… hahaha… I’ll cut your throat…” A few dozen meters from the cave, the makeshift caravan rested beside the road. They were the few survivors of Anadyr. Seven vehicles with dented metal, shattered windows covered with cardboard, and engines coughing black smoke. Families huddled together beneath filthy blankets, holding silently crying children close and chewing stale rations while the northern wind threatened to overturn them. When the caravan started its engines again at dawn and continued west, Matt didn’t climb into any of the vehicles. An old man shouted at him from the window of a van, extending a hand and urging him to get inside. Matt didn’t even look at him. He tightened his belt, pressed the knife wrapped in rags against his side, and began walking in the opposite direction. Away from the tires. Into the endless white expanse of the tundra. That was where the journey began. On foot. Years of walking followed, crossing ruined stretches of the continent, silent valleys, and dead roads. Whenever hunger burned through his stomach or fever threatened to bring him down in the snow, the memory of Valentin’s face struck his mind like a hammer. In the third year of his journey, he felt the first internal crack. His skin, hardened by the punishment of the road, began to grow denser. His flesh could repel thorns, the jagged blades of scavengers, and the freezing air of nights spent in the open. He had become a Master. But the steel in his mind demanded more. The pain he had accumulated could no longer fit inside that shell. Two years later, on the outskirts of the French forests, his physical limit finally gave way. Matt walked beneath an icy storm. With every step, his thighs burned. Inside him, the Will struggled to break through his pores. He felt as though his bones were about to splinter from within. The air around him began to distort. The invisible pressure emanating from his body was starting to alter the physics of his surroundings. He stopped in the middle of the muddy road and fell to his knees. The inner shell of his energy cracked. The Will burst inward, permeating his biology on a qualitative level. He had reached Illumination. When he stood again, he understood the true abyss separating this new rank from the one before it. He was no longer simply faster or stronger. He now possessed the qualitative change of the fourth rank. His Will could suppress and prevent the healing or regeneration of anyone below his rank if he managed to cut them. Furthermore, the density of his Will allowed him to briefly stand on the air itself, giving him access to bursts of movement and double jumps that had once been impossible. He reached the outskirts of the Guild’s camp only a few hours later, finally collapsing from the exhaustion accumulated throughout his journey. ⸻ In the present, inside a medical tent belonging to the Federation, Matt stared at his hands. A thin mist of Will hovered over his knuckles. Boris stood beside the cot, feeling the pressure in the air. He knew what that rank meant. “You reached Illumination on your own…” Boris murmured. “By walking. Without instructors. Just through sheer stubbornness.” Matt lowered his legs from the cot. His boots struck the ground with a dull thud. “Valentin has ascended. He’s an Expert now,” Matt said. His voice wasn’t cold because of arrogance. It was heavy with the exhaustion of his soul. “He has mastered the Will perfectly. He can walk on air as if it were solid ground, and a direct attack from him would break through my defenses. But I’m not the same novice who left Anadyr.” Matt clenched his fist. “If he can fly, I’ll learn how to bring him down.” Boris gritted his teeth and spread a tactical map across the table. “Valentin isn’t alone. As an Expert, he has two Illuminated Barons at his disposal, along with an entire garrison of Awakened. If you enter his territory head-on, they’ll tear you apart.” Matt approached the map and brushed his fingers over the mark representing enemy territory. “I’m not going in head-on,” Matt replied. His eyes remained fixed on the map. “I’m going to start cutting their legs out from under them… from the outside.”Latest Chapter
Valentin
Matt rose to his feet as though his body had suddenly become several times heavier. He had killed his comrade. He didn't know how he could face the others, but first, he had to win this fight.Tap.His foot struck the ground as Matt straightened up.His childish mourning was over. Now he was ready. He had to be. Only then would he be able to look his team in the eyes again. For a moment, Sofia stood frozen. However, the fight was far from over. She pulled the dagger from her thigh and got back to her feet. Julius used his Will to cauterize his shoulder wound, then gripped his rapier with his remaining hand and took his stance. As if bound by an unspoken agreement, the three of them lunged at Valentin, attacking mercilessly and giving him no room to breathe.Matt grabbed his sword and slashed diagonally toward Valentin's neck. The count leaned back, letting the blade pass, then smoothly kicked away the rapier aimed at his heart. With the same momentum, he kicked the air, propelling him
Expert
Mark watched the blood drip from Gustav's neck and saw the light fade from his eyes.He was dead.Mark leaped to the left, feeling a dagger graze his chest. He barely had time to react before a descending kick came crashing toward his head. He hurriedly raised his arm and threw himself to the ground to absorb the impact. With a forward burst, he narrowly avoided a stomp aimed directly at his face.Crack.The wooden floor splintered and broke beneath the force of the stomp.Mark looked up and saw a man standing among the debris, staring at him with cold, emotionless gray eyes."Who the hell are you?" Mark demanded. The gray-eyed man didn't even flinch.Thud.A dull blow rang out behind him, and Mark's world dissolved into darkness. The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was the silhouette of that man striding toward him."Good work," Matt said to Julius, who had just knocked their enemy unconscious."Bind him and sedate him. We leave in ten minutes," David ordered from the w
Turning Point I
Laura hurried back toward the group. The others followed, their expressions complicated.Without wasting any time, the captain called an emergency meeting, and every member of the team gathered."The infiltration team has urgent information," the captain announced. At his signal, Laura spoke up."Riots are breaking out across Sector One. Most of the counts and barons are busy suppressing the unrest." She paused briefly before continuing. "There's also a meeting at Valentin's fiefdom, attended by the two barons under his command. That's why we couldn't find any of them in Teller."She looked at the captain, handing the floor back to him."We don't know exactly what they're discussing, but this is the perfect opportunity to infiltrate the estate and kidnap a Baron," the captain said, unable to hide the excitement in his voice. With Sector One plagued by small-scale uprisings, no one would be able to respond in time to intercept their operation. The timing couldn't be better.Matt calmly
Oasis
"That's the town of Teller," David said, stating the obvious since they had already gathered all the useful information. They stopped and sat down beneath a pine tree to eat while they worked out their plan."Teller has around three hundred inhabitants, and there are Imperial officers stationed there as well," Julius said, grabbing a piece of jerky."That's right. Only three of us will enter: Laura, Enzo, and Silvio," the captain ordered.Obviously, a group of eight people would attract attention. Three people, on the other hand, all still at the Master rank, wouldn't draw nearly as much notice.Matt stared at them, stunned. He hadn't even considered that."There's an oasis half a day's journey from here, to the southeast. The rest of us will wait for you there."There was no need for discussion. Everyone already knew what to do. They were explaining the plan so Matt could understand it.Matt was irritated by how readily they had agreed. He hadn't thought of any of this. He had just w
Alliance
(Matt's POV)He was confused. One moment, he had been fighting. The next, he was in a cabin with the very same people he'd been fighting against. He thought they were going to arrest him, but before he could even process the situation, she hugged him, making all the tension drain away.It was Alicia. She was hugging him and telling him to calm down. For a moment, he didn't know what to do, but then he realized his Will was hurting her, so he brought it under control, concealing it completely. Then he saw Alicia finally manage to breathe again, and he gently tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear."Is that really you, Alicia? What are you doing here?"Alicia held his gaze for a few moments before taking two steps back. Then she turned to look at her teammates, who were now on guard, gripping their weapons tightly…Matt watched them. It was obvious they didn't trust him.The feeling was mutual.Matt ignored them and spoke to Alicia instead."So you're with them…" Matt said reflexive
Darkness
(Present)He was in darkness. An immeasurable, infinite blackness. He felt nothing. He didn't even have any memories. He simply existed, floating in the vastness of the darkness.Time passed…As time went by, memories began to return, one by one, like pieces of a puzzle joining together on a blank canvas, gradually tracing the outline of a memory.Matt was detached from the emotions that slowly came back to him. He had vague memories of needing to do something, no matter what. However, the darkness was pleasant. It made him reluctant to leave its embrace.Time passed, and he finally remembered that he had been heading to Alaska to kill Valentin. With that came understanding. If he had failed, then he still had to fulfill his revenge. And yet, he hadn't even managed to meet Valentin before losing to a bunch of strangers.Strangers who, despite being his enemies, had fought quite well.Matt had to fulfill his revenge, but that didn't mean he would ignore everything else. They had played
